Pairing: Viggo/Orlando
Rating: PG-13, I think
Summary: Admitting what's true isn't always easy.
Disclamer: Yeah, if I said this is real, I'd be lying. Sadly.
Orlando looked at his watch: 3:19pm. Still another hour until the streets of New York would be filled with busy people. Still another hour until he’d meet Viggo. Sighing, he adjusted his aviator glasses on his face and rolled the sleeves of his green shirt up to his elbows. Crossing the street, Orlando bought the New York Observer from the booth and made his way to the Central Park and sat down. It had been almost two months since he’d last seen Viggo and it had been a brief get-together in LAX. What they had been able to do back then was holding hands in a private space of first class passengers and lukewarm coffee straight from the machine. They had talked over the phone countless times, spending lonely evenings listening to the voice of one another.
Orlando knew the feeling he had, just like now, as he spotted an article of Viggo’s latest exhibition on the newspaper, the familiar tug of the heart. He was falling in love and he knew he needed to express it somehow.
Of course saying it to a man, much less to a friend, wasn’t going to be easy. Admitting the fact that he wasn’t as straight as he had tried to tell himself for years had been frightening. Realizing that he harboured feelings towards a man, his friend, had been even more frightening. Orlando remembered how a cold sweat had broken onto his skin one night. He shuddered now as well, just for thinking about a sleepless night months ago.
He hoped Viggo felt the same. Their discussions over the phone had been full of longing of some kind and there had been a touch of something in Viggo’s voice every time they were ending a call. Now that Orlando thought about it more, it had intensified over the last few weeks. He checked his watch again. It was exactly twenty minutes until he had checked it the last time. Muttering a string of curses under his breath, Orlando fully opened the Observer and started reading it to pass the time.
The traffic was intensifying as the minutes ticked by. Orlando could hear the amount of honking sounds increasing as more and more people drove the streets. It was now 4:05pm. Orlando stood up, folded the newspaper and decided to make a small trip through a part of the park itself. He was near the Children’s Zoo, he realized, and continued his way along until he came to the Carousel. Smiling, he watched the children playing, enjoying their ride. Making his way southwards he walked the Heckscher Playground which was on his right side.
The Columbus Circle was visible in the distance and he crossed the park to get there sooner. If they blended in with the people milling around like ants, no one would notice them. They’d just be two individuals, anonymous beings in the crowd. Orlando sat down on the steps at the base of the Columbus statue and looked around. Any minute now he would hear the voice he knew made the goose bumps rise on his skin. Any minute now.
“Lovely day, isn’t it?” a deep raspy voice asked. Orlando startled a little and the goosebumps rose onto his skin.
“You’re here.” Orlando whispered. “I missed you, Vig.”
“I missed you, too, Orli.”
“There’s...uh... Could we talk?” Orlando asked hesitantly playing with a corner of the folded newspaper. “Someplace private...or at least more private than this.” he added quickly.
“Um... Okay. How about Central Park?”
“Suits me.” With that Orlando rose to his feet and started walking towards the park. Viggo followed him closely, wondering what Orlando wanted to talk with him about.
They found a bench under a lush tree that shielded them from the sunlight. “You won’t need these now.” Viggo said taking the aviator glasses off.
Orlando blinked a few times and nodded. Viggo hung them to the neckline of Orlando’s shirt.
“Besides it’s more fascinating to look at you than my own face reflected back.” Viggo smiled and Orlando blushed.
Silence fell between them. Viggo was the one to finally break it. “A penny for your thoughts?”
“I’m just trying to figure out a way to begin.”
“Take your time.”
“Vig... am I wrong to assume that things have changed between us? I mean, I feel like something has changed in the way we talk with each other on the phone. I have my reasons and I’m figuring out the best way to tell them to you. I just thought I’d ask you first before I make a fool of myself.”
“You’re not wrong. Things have indeed changed.”
“Because I feel that my emotions towards you aren’t the same as a few months ago.”
Viggo suddenly felt uncomfortable. The way Orlando wasn’t looking into his eyes like he normally did and how Orlando spoke made him nervous.
“Vig, I know there has been something going on between us but... my feelings are changing. I am falling for you, Vig.” Orlando said playing with the hem of his shirt.
“Orli, look at me. Say it again.”
“I’m falling for you.” Orlando said lifting his gaze to meet Viggo’s. A dashing smile spread on Viggo’s face as he took Orlando’s trembling hands in his.
“And here I thought I was the only one. I feared you didn’t think we’d be worth a shot. Call me old man for thinking like that.”
“You’re not old.” Orlando protested.
“Let’s put an end to this play of Cat and Mouse and say what this really is,” Viggo said running his fingertips along a high cheekbone. “Shall we?”
“Okay.”
With that Viggo aligned their faces so that his lips were close to Orlando’s ear. “I love you.” Orlando listened intently, admiring the ease the words spilled out of Viggo’s lips. He couldn’t help but shudder a little as the warm breath hit the skin on his ear. Swallowing he did the same.
“I love you, too.” A comfortable silence fell between them and they stayed that way for a long time, cheeks pressed together. This time it was Orlando who broke the silence.
“May I kiss you?” he asked fearing his heart would beat its way out of his chest.
“Thought you’d never ask...” came the answer and Orlando sighed in relief.
Orlando pulled back a little, flushed pink and wet his lips. He bit his lip in the process and it was too much for Viggo. Before Orlando knew what had happened he was pulled into a soft kiss, just a pair of lips pressing against another. With that Viggo pulled away stealing a small peck from Orlando. Orlando, still somewhat dazed from the kiss, wasn’t having any of it. He pulled Viggo into a heated kiss that would no doubt leave them gasping for air. The way Orlando was kissing him was positively demanding. Orlando was seeking access, to be able to taste him and Viggo granted it. No matter how demanding and heated it was, it still remained sweet.
When they broke apart they were panting and Orlando let out an uncontrollable giggle. It broke Viggo’s composure and he started laughing.
“That was...something.”
“Yeah, it was.” Orlando answered coyly.
“I think...before this...I’ve never really been kissed.” Viggo decided and Orlando blushed even deeper. “I could get addicted to those, how you taste.” he warned playfully and Orlando chuckled.
“And I would mind...why?” Orlando asked and Viggo laughed again.
“I might not be able to let you go.”
“You don’t have to. I’m right here.”
“Good to know. Now that we’ve got this cleared up, could I buy you a cup of Starbucks coffee?”
“You know I love Starbucks coffee.” Orlando exclaimed.
“That I do.” Viggo admitted smiling.
“What are we waiting for?” Orlando asked happily and stood up. Viggo could only shake his head and smile.
They both knew it would be a long time till they’d establish their relationship. It was possible that they’d break up in the end but for now something good was taking its baby steps. They both led busy lives and blending those together wouldn’t be the easiest thing to do. Viggo, along with Orlando, was determined to make it work. He believed they deserved that chance. It would require a lot of work from them both but they believed that in the end it would pay itself back.
They both knew this had to stay just as hidden as it has been this far, if not even more carefully kept away from the public eye. Hollywood and its standards were cruel to even the most heterosexual people today and it would be pure hell for those who represent a minority. They would have to wait until the norm had changed. It needed certain changes in their schedules but love was something they wouldn’t bargain for anything. It was the thought, the touch, the kiss to keep them going.
