CHAPTER 8
Orlando took the shower as Viggo had requested but as he came back to the kitchen he was crying. “They’ve taken Evelyn...” he cried. The severity of the situation had hit him head on in the shower. “I have to find her... They’ll...they’ll hurt her!” The panic Viggo saw on Orlando’s face, posture and heard in his voice wrenched his heart a great deal. “Orli... You can’t...” Viggo began and red rimmed eyes shot up and bore into his. “You’ll end up hurting yourself.” he finished quietly. “God... Why am I so stupid I get myself into a mess like this?” Orlando sat down at the table hand banged his head against the surface. “Orli...NO! No... Don’t do that, please.” Viggo begged. “We’ll...we’ll call the police and tell them what’s happened.” “No!” The yell was so loud Viggo jumped back. “I don’t wish to bring the police into this at all.” “They have the means to solve this in a way that will please both parties, Orli. They’ve been trained into things like this. We aren’t. Can’t you call the police? Please?”
Orlando kept looking at Viggo and noticed the carefully concealed fear for them both, Evelyn and him. Viggo must be equally scared. “I don’t want you to get hurt, Vig, in any way. You mean too much to me.” “You think you don’t hurt me by shutting me out when you clearly need me? That if you get hurt in the process I won’t be affected? I love you, Orli. I’d be crushed if you did because I can’t stand another rejection. Or I could but my heart...” Viggo swallowed and continued quietly. “...can’t. And I’m already involved. You pulled me into this mess yourself by telling me the details.”
A hand flew to Orlando’s mouth as the realization hit him. Viggo was right. He was in this mess now all because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Viggo was in danger simply because he knew and all Viggo was trying to do... Orlando broke down again as he realized Viggo was doing his best to save Evie as well as him. “So...I call the police? What am I supposed to tell them?” “The truth. That’s all they want.” Orlando stood up, shoulders hunched, an angry red mark on his forehead from the banging, and walked to the living room to make the report. Viggo wisely stayed aside cooking food.
Viggo was setting the table when he heard Orlando ending the call. He peered into the living room and saw Orlando crying again, holding his head in his hands. He was also trembling and Viggo believed this time it wasn’t because of any withdrawal symptoms but because he was scared, almost out of his wits. “Orli, food is ready.” “Yeah...” Orlando sighed, wiped his eyes and stood up. “Well?” Viggo inquired. “They are sending investigators here to rummage around the house and interview me, maybe you as well.” “But I don’t know anything other than what you told me.” “I know that. They just said they want to be extra careful. They said they’ve been searching for Chris for a while now, and the thug he works for.” “Right...”
Orlando took the spoon in his hand and tasted the vegetable soup Viggo had made. It tasted good and his stomach agreed readily. He just wasn’t in the mood to eat. Staring at the plate he made himself empty it.
“Thank you. It was nice.” “My pleasure.” “You know...” Orlando began and changed his seat to sit beside Viggo. “I’ve done a lot of thinking and I can’t even begin to express how sorry I am for being a total fuckwit. I’ve acted horribly towards you and yet you’ve been a real sweetheart. I don’t deserve you, in any way.” “Stop that, Orli. You deserve me the same way I deserve you, got it?” “But I still don’t know why you’d ever forgive me.” “I won’t forgive you for anything because there’s nothing to forgive.” Viggo murmured and pulled Orlando to sit on his lap. “You are in a personal crisis and I understand how you feel. I’m not saying I know because I don’t. But I understand you and that a human being does strange things either under the influence or when under great stress.” Viggo ran his hand through Orlando hair. “Or both.” Orlando agreed. “Yeah, or both.”
“I’m scared, to say the least, Orli, and maybe a little bit selfish too but I’m not ready to lose you, let go. You used to make me happy, make me shine, you inspired me, were my muse. Without one missing component, a CLOSE friend, I don’t feel whole. I can live my life, sure, but something is missing, something important, and that’s happiness.
I know I have Henry, and Christine, and all the friends but they aren’t you. You’ve become to mean so much to me, more than before. I don’t know why I was so stupid all those years ago. I wish I could change a few things back then, like add love to the mixture of feelings we had. It was the essential part we lacked. And I wish...God do I wish... we could start anew, with Evie, and right the wrongs. You have to know I’d take your place in the blink of an eye if I could.” Viggo finished, his voice colored with despair.
Orlando blinked owlishly and tried to absorb everything he had just heard. Viggo said he loved him. If the tears running on his cheeks were anything to go by, he meant every uttered word as well. With shaky fingers Orlando wiped them away. “Please, don’t cry. It breaks my heart to see you so miserable. I never let myself believe you could ever love me, Vig. I’m sorry. I’m too much of an arse to realize important things.” “Don’t underestimate yourself.” “I don’t want to ignore you anymore. I feel bad about the previous as it is.” “Then don’t. Take me into your life, don’t shut me out. Please.” Orlando closed his eyes and dropped his head down pressing his forehead against Viggo’s.
