Chapter 3
Orlando kept on staring at the closed door for a few seconds and blinked when Evelyn broke through the haze. “Daddy, I need to use the loo.”
“Okay, sweetie.” Taking the items from the table, Orlando picked Evelyn up and carried her to the restrooms.
Just before leaving the ice cream bar, Orlando retrieved the bowl from outside and brought it back in. He thanked the waitress for it and ushered Evelyn out.
After showering Evelyn and putting her to bed, Orlando had some alone time. He thought a lot of what Viggo had said. Would it be okay if he let himself go, let himself give in to the emotions he now knew were reciprocated? His emotions, those he had always thought to be just sexual frustration and lust, had made a home inside his heart with Orlando’s memories of a funny Viggo. Those together had grown into love, but Orlando had his own demons to fight against. He didn’t want Viggo to get involved with the mess he was still in. He had promised himself to keep Viggo out of reach by rejecting Viggo.
Their nightly encounters had been explosive, something that was now firmly imprinted in their minds and souls, a hunger they could never stifle. Orlando knew that if he gave in, it would still be hot and ardent, but it would be completely different. Now they’d have their hearts in it, too, not just their minds. And if Orlando gave in, he’d also give Viggo the key to the lock in the gate embedded inside the wall. He wasn’t ready to destroy Viggo’s life; didn’t want to.
Life would be so much easier without Evelyn. Orlando had known how a child would affect his life and he had welcomed her with open arms, wanting to offer a home to a child who’d otherwise have to live travelling from one foster home to another. Being a father really wasn’t the problem Knowing how deep in shit he still was, Orlando broke down.
Orlando woke up at 7:30 am to make Evelyn breakfast. He had barely gotten any sleep at all. Yawning he decided to make extra strong morning coffee. Soon tiny footsteps could be heard from upstairs and going down the stairs with speed.
“Morning, daddy.”
“Good morning, angel.” Orlando sat Evelyn down and put a small bowl of whole grain cereal in front of her along with a glass of peach juice. He settled for two slices of toast and coffee.
“Guess what day today is?”
“What?” Evelyn asked, milk running down her jaw.
“Meghan will take you to the zoo.”
“Oh, yay! When?”
“Around ten. I’ll meet you two later, in town and we’ll go have lunch together.”
“What will you be doing?”
“I have some errands to run, work stuff.” Orlando quietly thanked the Lord there wasn’t anyone else with them-not his mother or Viggo. He was fidgeting so badly because he was nervous and those two were the most observant people Orlando knew. He had a meeting as well.
After Evelyn had finished breakfast, it was time for getting dressed and brushing her teeth. When Orlando had managed to get Evelyn ready and watching the Muppets, he finished his own breakfast. The coffee was lukewarm by now but Orlando drank it anyway, even though it made him shudder. Then he quickly did the dishes and took a shower.
Meghan came at 9:15 to pick Evelyn for their zoo trip. She smiled at Orlando who gave her a small back pack filled with Evelyn’s favourite snacks. “Just call me if anything happens, okay?”
“Will do, Mr. Bloom.”
“Gods, stop calling me that. I’m Orlando from now on, okay? No Mr. Bloom anymore.”
Nodding Meghan called for Evelyn who came running to the door. “Are you ready?”
“Yes, Meg.”
“Good. Now, let’s go.”
“Bye, daddy.” Evelyn said.
Orlando crouched down and received a small peck to his clean shaven cheek. He gave one to Evelyn as well. “Be a good girl.”
After Evelyn was on her way, Orlando left. He had an interview to make and then the meeting he dreaded already.
