CHAPTER 2
...There’s only Evelyn and me.

“So... You’re saying you regret what we had in New Zealand?” Viggo asked, resentment written on his face.
“No.”
“You’re not saying or you regret?”
“All I’m saying is that it never should have happened.”
“So it was a mistake.”
“It should never have happened.”
“How can you say that?”
“Because it wasn’t what it was supposed to be.”
“I can’t believe this...” Viggo gasped.
“Viggo, understand this: it was only lust we felt back then. I was young, naïve... you were lonely, had been for God knows how long. It was the sum of too many things that we ended up in your bed, and kept it going. You have to understand that.”
Viggo felt his eyes starting to sting. “Orli, I lo...” Viggo was soon silenced with a soft finger pressed on his lips. Orlando shook his head.
“No, you don’t.” Orlando said softly. “It’s only an imitation, a mirage.”
“Why did you want to meet me?” Viggo asked, his voice cracking against his own will.
“To catch up. To spend time as friends. That’s what we agreed on being, remember?”
“Yeah...” Viggo began looking at the sky. “How could I forget?”

When had Orlando grown up? This wasn’t the same Orlando Viggo had known. The one he knew was carefree and exuberant. This Orlando sitting on the blanket was a stranger. “You know. I feel stupid for coming. I had hoped we’d... Never mind.”
“Viggo. I know you hurt because I hurt too. I can’t deny the fact that New Zealand affected me, too. But we can’t be together for various reasons.”
“Yeah, because you don’t want to. I get it.”
“No. We don’t have time for each other. We are better off as...”
“...as friends.” Viggo finished. “I get that. Just... what if I don’t want to be a friend?”
“Then that’s your choice. My choice will be Evelyn. I can’t abandon her over something that isn’t on a steady ground.”
“I’m not asking you to abandon her.”
“Vig... No.”
“Why are you against this?” Orlando was ready to rip his hair out of his head in frustration. “Because I’m not ready. It’s simple.”
“But you will be? Right?”
“I don’t know. Honestly. I have no clue. Let’s just drop this, okay?”
Viggo sighed. His hopes once again had come face to face with a dead end. Swallowing, he nodded. He’d let it be – for now. He knew his feelings hadn’t changed. It really was love he felt, he was certain about it even though Orlando tried to convince him otherwise. He couldn’t switch emotions off with a snap of his fingers. Orlando seemed to be passive; there was a wall of some sort carefully built around him. It was as if Orlando didn’t even want anyone near him.

Of course, Hollywood life was cruel. Living in the spotlight could easily make anybody turn inwards and apparently that has happened with Orlando. Viggo was almost certain about it. Orlando touched him on his shoulder. It made Viggo grit his teeth. “Vig... I’m not saying it isn’t a possibility. But look at us and the lives we now lead. Do you see us forming a relationship?”
Viggo thought about it. He realized, begrudgingly, that Orlando was right. “No, I don’t.” he sighed.
“Exactly. That’s why it’s best if we are friends.”
Nodding Viggo accepted the fact.

“Now. Would you like a cup of coffee?” Orlando asked looking at Viggo. Viggo peeked in the basket Orlando had on the blanket.
“No coffee?” he asked finding only a sandwich and bagels.
“Nah. I had promised Evie ice cream. I thought I’d permit myself my guilty pleasure in an ice cream bar, Chai Latte. I could buy you whatever you want in there.”
“Coffee is fine.”
“Okay, then. Evie and Sidi come on. Time to go.”
“Where are we going?” Evelyn asked.
“I promised you ice cream, didn’t I?”
“Yes!”
“Well, I’m going to buy Viggo coffee and at the same time take you to the ice cream bar.”
“Yay! Thank you, daddy!” Evelyn threw her arms around Orlando and squeezed.
“Evie, help me with this blanket.” Orlando asked standing up and taking the basket wit him. They started folding it and placed it on the basket, neatly folded. “Thank you, angel.” Orlando said pressing a peck on her blonde locks. Viggo watched them interact with pain in his chest.

They walked to Orlando’s car that was parked nearby. Popping the trunk open he let Sidi in. Then he lifted Evelyn up and placed her in her safety seat fastening her belt. Viggo let himself in to the front seat. Orlando took off driving calmly through the streets. It was a whole new experience for Viggo. In New Zealand Orlando’s driving style had been reckless. Soon they were parked. Orlando let Evelyn and Sidi out. Viggo slammed the door shut. The door to the ice cream bar made a clinging sound. There was a small bell hanging from the handle. Evelyn spotted a sunny booth and made a mad dash to it, Viggo following her. Orlando fastened Sidi to a small hook right outside the door, under a sun shade. First thing he did was ask for a bowl and water. Taking them to Sidi outside, he joined Viggo and Evelyn. Taking the ice cream menu from the pile he handed it to Evelyn. Then he took another one, handing the beverage list, to Viggo. The waitress soon came to take their orders.
“What could I get you, miss? Gentlemen?”
“I’d like to have peach ice cream, please. One ball.” Scribbling it down the waitress smiled.
“Excellent choice. Anything for you, sirs?”
With a quick glance at Orlando, Viggo made his order. “I’ll have black coffee, no sugar. Thank you.”
“And I’ll have the Chai Latte, please.”
“Okay. I’ll be back shortly.”

When the waitress was gone Orlando spoke. “Out of all of these possibilities you choose sugarless coffee?”
“Yeah. I’ve picked up a habit of drinking it black. I’ve spent countless nights awake and... black coffee is easy and quick to make. Besides, since I’m diabetic, sugar is on a no no –list.”
“You’re diabetic?”
“Yeah, these days...”
“Since when?”
“Since about...two years.”
“Wow. Is it serious?”
“It’s the type two, so I can; so far, keep it in control just by eating healthily, avoiding real sugar and exercising.”
“How did you find it out?”
“Had a brief meeting with a doc on set. I had been experiencing exhaustion. I was taking a leak a tad bit too often contrary to before and I was thirsty. The doc I talked about took a routine check measuring how much sugar I had in my blood. He found out it was high, much higher than it normally should. He ordered a battery of tests in the hospital and they found out I was suffering from insulin resistance, thus the type two.”
“I had no idea.”
“Yeah, well. It’s life. Doesn’t make much of a difference.”

The smiling waitress brought them their orders. Evelyn got her ball of peach ice cream. A happy squeal escaped her mouth as she saw the accessories sticking to every direction. She carefully pulled them out pushing them towards Orlando. “You taking them all home?” Orlando asked picking the items up and inspecting them.
“Uh-huh.”
“I better start looking for a box for your memorabilia.” Evelyn just smiled and dug into her ice cream. Orlando couldn’t help but chuckle.
Viggo remained silent. He smiled at the father and daughter but didn’t say a word. Only when the black coffee he had ordered was placed in front of him he opened his mouth and thanked the waitress. Orlando, too, thanked her politely and took a sip.

The silence fell between them. Both of them were at a loss of what to say. Quietly they drank their beverages. Luckily, Evelyn broke the uncomfortably quiet moment. She had eaten her ice cream and was now about to fall asleep onto the table. Orlando stood up, checked out the table number and went to pay. He heard Viggo standing up as well and heading to the door. He quickly paid for the bill.
“Wait! Don’t leave so soon. Can we catch up another time?”
“I don’t think there will be another time. Thanks for the ride, and the coffee. It was nice seeing you.”
With that Viggo turned, opened the door and walked out.
