CHAPTER 1

Orlando spun Evelyn in the air. They were playing in a park all the while having a picnic. Sidi was running after birds and every once in a while Orlando was forced to call him back. They were also waiting for company. Orlando had heard Viggo was in town and had called him immediately. It had been nearly four years they had seen each other last, so when Viggo received the call, he agreed to come right away.

Viggo shared a past with Orlando. It wasn’t solely because they had worked together in a mammoth-sized project; spent eighteen months in New Zealand. It was because back then they had crossed the fine line between friendship and love. Or so they had thought. On the eve of their departure they realized they had been driven by lust and desire, things that often were mistaken for being emotions of love. Of course they were associated with love but love held inside many other emotions as well, emotions Viggo or Orlando hadn’t come across to feel.

Viggo had tried to get over Orlando, tried to forget what they shared, but he had bitterly admitted long ago it wasn’t easy. He still woke up at times feeling the same overwhelming surge of desire, felt the same lust he had felt when faced with a young, barely legal Orlando. It wasn’t easy to let go. It was like a drug: it took control over you before you noticed. It kept Viggo in its fierce grip. The grip was so tight that every time he realized Orlando had taken yet another step away from him, it twisted him like a wet cloth. The drug- like feeling also was conniving. Years ago it had started to change into love: sucking in colors and other emotions but still kept Viggo from reaching Orlando. Staying as friends hurt but if it was the only way Viggo could have Orlando, he’d take it.

Orlando was pretending to try to catch Evelyn, running after her when Viggo entered the park. Sidi made a mad dash towards the stranger, barking loudly. He jumped against the quiet man leaving dirty paw prints to the front of his jacket. Loud barking caught Evelyn’s interest and Orlando grabbed her, throwing her into the air and catching her when she fell back. Turning around, he recognized the stranger. “Oh, man. I’m so sorry for your jacket.” Orlando began as he noticed the paw prints. Viggo couldn’t help but laugh.
“It’s okay, Orli.” Evelyn wore a perfect expression of mistrust when she saw Viggo. Orlando had always taught her not to speak to strangers.
“Evie, this is Viggo, my friend. Vig, Evelyn.”
Hurt briefly flashed in Viggo’s eyes. Yeah, a friend. Then he took Evelyn’s small hand in his and bowed, placing a tickly kiss on the soft skin. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Princess Evelyn.” Evelyn’s eyes spread wide. Then a huge disarming smile appeared on her face.
“Nice to meet you, too.”

Orlando had adopted Evelyn when she was just five months old. Her mother had been a drug addict and died while giving birth to her. There was no information about her biological father and her mother had died before anyone could ask. Evelyn had inherited her mother’s blonde hair but her eyes must have come from her biological dad, for they were green. Now Evelyn had Orlando and she called him daddy. Orlando was the only protective adult she had ever known.

“Daddy, can I go play with Sidi?” Evelyn asked briefly looking at Viggo.
“Sure thing.” Digging in his jacket pocket Orlando took a worn out tennis ball. “Here. Just remember...stay close to me, okay?” Handing the ball to Evelyn he let her back down. Orlando sat down onto the blanket and motioned for Viggo to join him. As soon as Viggo had sat down Orlando punched him to his arm. “Bloody hell, Vig! How are you?”
Viggo thought of his answer for a while. “I’ve been good. Busy.” If only you knew. Viggo squinted at the sun and turned to look at Orlando, who looked tired and sad. “What about you?”
“Searched for and found a nanny with a degree in child care. After that I’ve been harassed by rumors that I’m banging her.”
“Are you?” Viggo asked carefully, mirth in his eyes. He, too, wanted to know the truth.
“Hell no, Vig! Even though she’s single... and attractive. For fuck’s sake it’s in her contract. I wanted it in there, that if the media got too much we’d show them legal document there’s no way... Hell!” Orlando’s chest was heaving. “That’s not why I hired her.” Orlando continued with a quiet tone. “I... There’s no... Fuck. I’m not with anyone and it’s best kept that way. Evelyn is everything I have right now. We are happy, just the two of us.”
“What happened to Miranda?”
“She realized that playing a mother wasn’t what she wanted. Because if someone wants me, then she has to want Evelyn as well.”
“She?”
“Vig. Don’t even go there.” Orlando said in a warning tone.
“Why? What’s so wrong about that?”
“I don’t... I’m not...” Orlando covered part of his face with his hand. “It’s not something I want to discuss.”
“Because...?”
“I’m supposed to be a father, for Christ’s sake. It... It doesn’t fit in with the picture I have in my head.”
“A picture?”
“Yes. A picture of my family. There’s only Evelyn and me.”

Viggo felt like someone stabbed him in the guts. Orlando’s answer seemed so final. There really was no hope for them. No hope at all.

Poor Vig! Orlando has that picture in his head of the perfect family -- the wife waiting for the hubby to come home, the 2.2 kids, etc. None of it reality. I understand, though. With kids, you want them to live in a perfect world.

I'm looking forward to more, but I think this story might slay me.
*hugs*
