CHAPTER INDEX

19
Early spring, 2010.
Viggo and Orlando were both getting ready for the Oscars. Viggo was presenting one of the sought- out gems and Orlando was nominated. Dorian, the film where he played a leukemic and famous street artist, had been welcomed by the audience. Critics had been mostly positive about his performance saying in various articles it had been a brave choice to make. Orlando kept quiet about how true the story of Dorian Birch was.

Orlando was continuously laughing and smiling these days. First his letter to the donor of the transplanted bone marrow had been answered. He had gotten the transplant from a 35 years old brain dead woman, who had had ovarian cancer. She had had a certificate for organ donation in her wallet and her family, her husband and parents had given their consent. It had made Orlando smile. There truly were good people out there still, it seemed. Secondly, he had received an Oscar nomination late last year. He had been sitting at the kitchen table a mug of tea in front of him the letter in his hand. Viggo had come home from the grocery store then and read the message. He had hugged Orlando, kissed him tenderly and said “ Do you believe me when I say you’re an excellent actor?” Orlando had mutely nodded, eyes wide, trying to comprehend what had happened.

“You ready?” Viggo asked turning around. Orlando was indeed ready, dressed in a black slim suit, with a proper white shirt and cravat. Viggo’s jaw dropped. Orlando had always looked really good, clothes or no clothes, but now he seemed to shine. Maybe it was the general happiness he felt and the health he now had. Orlando had also bulked up nicely eating Viggo’s home cooking. Taking a step forward and smiling serenely, Orlando nodded before bestowing a small kiss on Viggo’s lips.

“I’m ready.”

“Okay. Let’s go then.”

The Kodak Theater was slowly filling with people. The red carpet spread outside felt like a mile long red path. They had agreed on arriving in separate cars because it somehow felt safer that way. They also weren’t out; at least they hadn’t made a public statement about it. Viggo was nearly blinded by the flashlights when he arrived. He tried to blink the dancing yellow and green patches behind his lids away on his way inside. Orlando was attacked by the media, literally. Magazines and newspapers were asking questions, taking pictures, making him pose for a few shots. No matter how politely he asked them to let him go inside, they didn’t leave him alone. When the safety personnel arrived he was able to slip inside the theater. Inside he was attacked by his friends and people he had come to know over the years in the industry. It was a struggle to get to his seat next to Viggo.

“You in one piece?” Viggo whispered gently pressing his open palm on Orlando’s thigh and running his hand back and forth.
“Yeah, I think so.” Orlando whispered back pretending to check himself through. He nodded and gave Viggo a shining smile.

The theater darkened and the curtains slid aside revealing Whoopi Goldberg. She started firing her endless stream of jokes towards the guests present and to the millions of people watching the Oscars on TV. In between she asked the Oscar presenters to come out show the nominees and the singers and dance shows to take place. Viggo squeezed Orlando’s thigh before slipping away from his seat. He headed for the backstage along the aisle while the guests were laughing at Whoopi’s jokes.

He went to the men’s room, opened the faucet, cupped his hands and filled the formed cup with cool water. He drank some of it and then gurgled, spitting the water out attempting to clear his voice. He looked at his image in the mirror and, sighing, exited the bathroom.

“And now... May I present you; the Oscar nominated Renaissance man, the true chameleon of art... Viggo Mortensen!” Whoopi announced and walked away from the stage.

“Thank you, Whoopi. I’ve been granted a hard task this year. I am the one, who speaks out the decision between Denzel Washington’s True Eyes, Will Smith’s sci-fi colored drama No Man’s Land, Orlando Bloom’s Dorian, Al Pacino’s Wild and Dustin Hoffman’s comedic role in Library Tales...” The camera zooms to the nominees’ faces after their name is pronounced. “It hasn’t been an easy decision to make, I believe. All of these men have made excellent work in their attempts to touch the truest point of their characters. Let’s watch a short clip of each film...” Viggo turns towards the big screen. He’s glad his face isn’t anywhere near the microphone. He had to gulp when he saw a bald Dorian crying and facing the sky, shouting a broken ‘ Why me?’ into the air. Orlando had looked just like that.

Viggo cleared his throat turning back to the audience. “And the Oscar of the Best Actor in a Leading Role goes to....” Viggo carefully opened the envelope and a spontaneous smile crept up on his face and he chuckled. “...Orlando Bloom and his portrayal of Dorian Birch in Dorian!”

Hearing his name spilling out of Viggo’s lips Orlando burst into tears. He quickly clapped his hands in front of his face and bent down trying to collect himself. Wiping his eyes and rapidly blinking, he rose and could hear the clapping of numerous hands increasing. He walked down the aisle, hopped the few steps up to the stage and took the golden miniature statue Viggo handed him. Taking Viggo’s place in front of the microphone, he put the statue on the table and cleared his throat.

“I must look like bloody shit right now...” he began softly making people laugh out loud and whistle. “Um, I haven’t prepared for this so I have to improvise my speech I guess. Uh, I want to thank each and every person I had a privilege to meet while filming. I want to thank the director for his outstanding work, the cast and the crew. They know this has been emotionally difficult for me. I felt like this film was my calling, so to speak. I, myself, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008. It was a real struggle for me, it nearly consumed me. But I know my family and friends, along with medical intervention, saved my life. That’s why I want to thank my family especially for being there for me and the same goes for my friends. Before I stop babbling there’s one more person needing the special mention in my Thank you list. It’s you, Viggo...” Orlando said turning to face Viggo. “You were the rock, the thread I could grab when things got too much. That’s why I dedicate this to you, Vig.” Orlando felt another onslaught of tears threatening to spill out. “So, yeah...” he had to smile and wipe a tear away. “Thank you. Really, thank you all.” With that Orlando spun around grabbing his Oscar and flung himself in Viggo’s arms. “Get me out!” he said his voice cracking as he tried to bury his face into Viggo’s neck. Viggo pulled back slightly and gave him a heartfelt kiss in right there, outing them both.

They had agreed on coming out at some point and Viggo figured this was as good a time as any to stop the rumours from flying. Then he unceremoniously led Orlando away from the stage following a young woman dressed in a golden evening gown.

Backstage there were screens showing live footage from the stage. In the hall, people were standing up as they applauded. More and more kept standing up. “Orli, hun. Look.” Viggo said letting go of Orlando. His smile was broader than ever before. Orlando opened his eyes and looked at the screen eyes wet and wide. People inside the hall were giving him a standing ovation.

“Tell me that I’m dreaming...”

“No, you’re not. It’s true. Everything is true.” In the darkness of the backstage Viggo and Orlando shared a deep, soul filling kiss.

Later there were many articles in the newspapers, on various Internet sites and gossip magazines. The Internet was the place Henry found a picture of the Best Leading Actor with the presenter. He laughed at Orlando’s somehow smug expression. He knew Orlando had received rather cool reviews and comments of his acting skills. Now, Orlando had proved to be a good and notable actor. Viggo had a soft and knowing smile on his face as if he was telling the media ‘ I’ve known it all my life’. Henry printed the picture out and left it on the fridge door trapped under a carrot- shaped magnet. He also wrote a quick note that he’d be meeting some friends and would return back later.

Karl was kicking and screaming, pulling against the restraints he had in his arms and legs. There had been a door open near his room and he had heard the nurses watching the Oscars that evening. “You or me?” the other of the nurses asked, sighing.

“I can go.” the other said smiling. Taking a small dose of sedative with him the nurse entered Karl’s private room. Before Karl was falling asleep he realized finally what he had done. He had been the one destroying his chances with Viggo. He was to blame for everything that had happened and why he was there getting sedatives. Breaking down he finally fell asleep.

And that would go down as "Best Improvised Speech by the Best Actor in a Leading Role' in Oscar's history... it'll get Best Acceptance by The Audience' too!!!

I see the sedatives help a bit...

Good chapter. A pity its almost over though.

See you at the next,
SP

Le sigh, if only that pic was really. Maybe some day our boy will be recognised. You almost had me feeling sorry for Karl at the end there, obviously he has real problems and isn't just evil. I think I like that, makes him more human.
