CHAPTER INDEX
12
It was raining when Orlando was finally released. Viggo was there to take him home. While signing the discharging papers, Orlando felt wistful. The staff in the hospital had become like a second family. He had spent so much time there.
“Bye, everyone.”
“And stay out!” Lucy said and playfully kicked Orlando’s butt. Orlando, along with Lucy and the rest of the staff, was laughing.
“I’m going, I’m going!”
They ran to the car Viggo had parked in the parking lot and drove away. Orlando let out a deep and long sigh.
“I’m so happy to get out of there. I was beginning to become claustrophobic.”
“I can understand that. I wouldn’t like to be there inside the hospital let alone have a bubble around me to decrease my living space.”
“You’ve always been like that.”
Those words touched Viggo deeply. Karl would never have known he felt too restricted in places like a hospital. Orlando did. Viggo smiled and nodded.
“Yeah. True.”
“You are this great artist who needs his space and some alone time.”
“Maybe, but I also need the time with my loved ones as well.” Orlando smiled at Viggo. He knew that as well.
“So, where to, Mr. Bloom?” Viggo asked as they drove away from the parking lot.
“Um...Uh... My house, I guess. I’m so knackered I can feel myself falling asleep already.”
“Okay, your house it is.” Viggo answered with a smile.
“You know, I really hate I missed your birthday,” Orlando said wistfully.
“Getting you back is more important than that. Besides I’ll have another birthday next year.”
“I missed an important milestone. You turned 50! And what did I do? I lay on a hospital bed.”
“It’s not your fault.” Viggo said with a warm and soothing voice.
“We’ll celebrate me as soon as you’ve slept, okay?”
“Okay.”
When they reached Orlando’s house, Viggo stepped out of his car and rounded it to open Orlando’s door. It was still raining, maybe heavier now than before. Taking Orlando’s bag out of the trunk, he brought it to the front porch. Orlando hadn’t moved an inch. He still stood there right outside the car, completely soaked.
“Orli...” Viggo began as he stepped back into the rain.
“Go inside. I don’t want you getting a cold.”
“I’m being a good host...” Orlando said with a small smile. He hugged Viggo then. “Thanks for bringing me home.”
“Any time, Orli,” Viggo said fondly.
“Yeah. I know.”
Orlando placed his warm hands on Viggo’s cheeks and tilted his head. When he was pleased with the angle he took a step closer and when he slid his wet hands over Viggo’s ears, their lips met. Viggo’s voice hitched and he held Orlando tight, hoping he could share some of his warmth with him because he was unable to let go. He didn’t want to, either. Silently he began to cry as he felt Orlando seeking access. He granted it with happiness and held on for his dear life. Silently he thanked the Gods for the rain as his tears were mixed with fresh raindrops. He had already forgotten what it was like to kiss Orlando or be kissed by him. Orlando always kissed with utmost care. His kisses were strong, of course, but so delicate at the same time.
“Okay, okay. Let’s get back to that after you’ve slept soundly,” Viggo laughed as he pulled back.
Orlando started swaying in his arms. He gave Viggo a sleepy smile and nodded.
“And, that was one hell of a thank you as well,” Viggo added, touching his lips with his fingers. “Sleep well...”
“I will.” Orlando said with a yawn. Then he turned back and ran inside grabbing his bag on his way. Viggo sat back in his car and for a while he looked at the closed door, then laughed out loud and drove off.
Orlando leaned against the door as soon as he got in and closed his eyes. He felt giddy, something he hadn’t felt in years. Viggo still had the ability to kiss his knees weak. Chuckling Orlando walked to the bedroom, took a quick shower and fell onto the bed. He was asleep in no time.
It was late in the afternoon when Orlando woke up. He felt well rested and energetic, something he hadn’t felt in weeks. He called Viggo, made coffee, a phone call and went back to bed. He must have dosed off because he woke up with a start as Viggo called.
“Still sleepy? I shouldn’t have left but I’m at your door anyway. Would you let me in?”
“Wait up...” Orlando shut his phone, threw it on the unmade bed and ran to the door. Viggo’s eyes widened as he saw Orlando. His ribs were very prominent under his skin.
“Hmm. I need to fatten you up. Good thing I brought the cake.”
“Come in. I’ll go dress up and come back here, okay?”
“Sounds good to me.”
“Brilliant.” Orlando ran back upstairs and rummaged through his wardrobe.
Meanwhile, there was a knock at the front door. Viggo opened it and was surprised to see a delivery man standing there with a huge package in his hands.
“Mr. Turner?”
“Th..that’s me...”
“Would you sign here, please?” The delivery man handed Viggo a paper he signed with the false name and received the package.
“Have a nice day, sir.”
“Thank you.”
Viggo carried the white, long cardboard box to the nearby table and opened the lid. ‘Oh, Orli...’ he whispered as he sank his hands inside. As he had gotten the lid off he revealed a bouquet of fifty white gerberas. He buried his face into the bouquet and smelled.
“I was going to give you those myself but this works just fine. What I don’t have is a gift.”
Viggo spun around. “Oh, you don’t need to give me one. I already have been given the best birthday gift this year. He stands right in front of me. I couldn’t ask for more.”
“You big sap.” Orlando said affectionately, giving Viggo a kiss and a smile.
“Happy birthday, Vig.”
“You constantly make me want to cry.”
“How so?”
“You’ve been through so much and still you are you, the genuine Orlando I fell hopelessly in love with, who I still love.” Viggo laughed a little. He knew he was getting sappy but right now he couldn’t care less.
