CHAPTER INDEX

10

Those two days felt like a small eternity. Half of what Orlando wanted was for them to be over quickly; the other half didn’t really want the forty-eight hours to be full at all. He grimaced as the lab worker marched in pushing the by now familiar little tray in front of her. “One blood test in store for you.” the nurse said brightly, making Orlando cringe. The skin on his arms was so scarred due to the continuous intravenous antibiotics and other fluids and because there had been numerous times someone wanted his blood.

“Fucking shit!” Orlando exclaimed as the needle stung. Thankfully it was soon over and he was left alone. Not long after the lab worker had gone, his doctor walked in.

“Orlando, I know you hate needles by now but there’s one more crucial test to be done. I’m talking about a bone marrow biopsy and if I said it doesn’t hurt like real hell... well, I’d be lying. I’ll try to do everything in my medical power to make it less painful. The biopsy will take only minutes and by the end of this day we’ll know if your new transplanted marrow has started to work and if it looks normal. I’ll be taking that biopsy from your hip bone.”

“When?”

“In about fifteen minutes.”

“Bugger.”

“Yeah, I know,” the doctor said and with a sad smile.

Later on Orlando was thankful for the pain pills. His hip hurt a lot and his back was stiffening as he had to lie on his side for so long. The door opened and the pain was forgotten. Orlando would recognise that piercing blue pair of eyes anytime, anywhere.

“Hey.”

“Hey. You look like you hurt.”

“I do, Vig. They wanted another blood test to be taken and a bone marrow biopsy... bloody vampires. When my blood isn’t enough anymore they attack my hip. Thank God they gave me pills.”

Viggo smiled and the laugh lines in the corners of his eyes deepened.

“Tonight I’ll know...” Orlando said his voice sounding scared but at the same time expectant.

Viggo would have liked to be able to hold Orlando as he heard the lab results but couldn’t. The bubble would be removed in case Orlando was on the mend for sure. But both of them were silently glad that they were together to hear the news.

“How was your day?” Orlando asked trying to steer his thoughts to something else.

“I went out for lunch with Henry. Spent quality time with him just walking outside, talking. And of course, thought about everything that’s been going on lately. Yours?”

“Well, I woke up around seven, had breakfast, did some thinking, napped, wrote on my diary... Stuff like that. It’s so boring to just lie here and do nothing from day to day.”

The visiting hours were almost over when the doctor walked in. He took a seat while Viggo moved away from the stool.

“I’ve got some news for you now.” Orlando blinked owlishly before settling his eyes on the doctor’s face.

“The results are here...” The doctor said and waved a paper sheet in the air. Orlando tried to comprehend what the numbers and occasional words meant. “Looks like a dramatic change has taken place in your system.”

Viggo hated the way the doctor was speaking. Why couldn’t he just tell them the news? Did the transplantation save Orlando’s life or do they have to start counting the days down? Viggo scratched his head and started pacing back and forth in front of the room door. The fear of losing Orlando forever made him space out. He was rapidly making plans in case the worst happened. He was preparing himself to tell people if Orlando couldn’t do it... that the battle was lost. He also decided it was good to rearrange the future plans IF the worst case scenario was to happen. Viggo fell back to reality when he heard a sharp gasp coming from inside the bubble. Orlando had his hand on his mouth and his eyes were squeezed shut.

“What? WHAT?”

“I’ll ask the nurses to come remove the bubble, Mr. Mortensen. Have a nice day.” With that the doctor walked out leaving them alone again. Viggo had totally missed out on the news.

Viggo stood still, unable to move in his confusion. He just stared at Orlando and didn’t really register when the nurses came in. Only when the bubble fell onto the floor with a slap, and he could really see Orlando, he knew.
