Viggo sat on a rock on a beach in New Zealand. The fjord opening in front of him was breathtaking. Sun was still up shining between two sharp mountains making the water shimmer in gold. The breeze was soft and warm against him. It was eight years, eight long years, ago when he had left the country and some of the memories behind. Those memories were too painful to hold inside. Leaving New Zealand had felt so final back then. He knew there were things better left at that. He could still feel the stab of pain in his chest when he closed his eyes. If he did it he would see a silvery plane against the impossibly blue sky carrying a precious cargo far away.

The narrow path through a thick forest was soft under Orlando’s shoe-clad feet as he made his way towards a beach. The sunlight was sifting through the thick growth making tiny rays appear and paint everything greener. This beach he was heading to was a place in New Zealand he had never been before. The blue sky above reminded him about the most painful choice he had ever made. He had left his heart in there and not solely for the country. It had taken so much of him to fly away. The bitterest tears in his whole life had run down his cheeks above the Indian Ocean. The most heart wrenching sobs had escaped his lips somewhere over France when the sense of finality had sunken in.

Now the atmosphere was different. There was hope in the air, in the wind touching both their faces with a delicate brush. Orlando reached the shore, took his shoes off and stepped on the warm white sand. The turquoise water not that far away looked inviting so he dipped his bare toes in it. It was a striking contrast to the warm sand with its coolness. Tiny fishes were swimming away in front of him. Orlando smiled sadly at how carefree they seemed. They knew nothing of heartache, had never even heard of it.

Viggo was ankle deep in the cool water. He had seen a white seashell shining like a diamond under the clear water and wanted to pick it up. But soon he found a bigger one, this with light brown edges. And another with a hint of yellow on it. He crouched down to pick it up thinking he’d give it to Orlando some day. As he reached for it a strong hand covered his. He tried to pull his hand away but it was safely held in Orlando’s own. “You came...” was all he could say without his voice betraying him. He was rewarded with a disarming smile.
