Early Thursday morning. Orlando was alone in the kitchen. Gaby was having a sleep-over at her friend’s and Julian was sleeping. Viggo was in Denmark promoting his latest film. Orlando was reading the newspaper in peace enjoying his camomile tea when the tell tale signs his body was telling him made him grab the phone and call 911. This was his third, and definitely last, time. With ease he scribbled down a note for Jude telling there was fresh coffee for him in the thermos flask on the table and that he was okay but he had left for the hospital.

He walked into the ambulance waiting for him. He dialled Viggo’s number and hoped he wasn’t busy.
“Hey there, stranger.” came the slightly husky salute. “Hey, Vig. I wanted to call you that...it’s time. I’m on my way to the hospital as we speak. Everything’s fine.” “What? Already? A week early?” “Well, it’s our genes we are talking about.” Orlando had to laugh warmly.

On the same day Julian had graduated Orlando had heard they were going to have their own real evening star. He had told Viggo after the hustle about Julian’s excellent diploma had died down. Viggo had scooped him up in his arms and spun him in the air telling all over again how happy he was. Orlando had smiled and kissed Viggo lightly.

At dusk Orlando made another call to Viggo. He leaned back on the pillows and sighed. “Hello, Viggo.” he started with a tired but happy voice. “Oh, Orli...” “I wanted to call you and say how much I really love you. And there’s someone else who has something to tell you as well.”

What Viggo heard next brought tears to his eyes. There, on the other end of the line, was their content newborn baby. Viggo felt silly sitting on his bed in his hotel room laughing and crying at the same time. “I love you, my son...” he began softly. “I am so sorry I couldn’t be there for your grand entrance. But I promise I’ll make it up to you.” Orlando laughed at those words and wiped his wet cheek.

Orlando was watching TV gently holding the baby in his arms. He was mesmerised with the tiny face. So were Julian and Gabrielle. Henry had called and congratulated. He’d come over later. He had just placed the tiny baby into his cot when Orlando heard the door close. He turned around to see Viggo looking at him with the same shine in his eyes as all the years ago.

They both had known this pregnancy would be dangerous. Orlando wasn’t all that young anymore and that brought difficulties with it. Orlando had almost lost the precious baby when he was three months along but he had been adamant about carrying the child to full term. So had Viggo. Doctors had fought to save Orlando and the baby’s lives. They had succeeded and now their home smelled of a new baby again.

Viggo and Orlando enveloped each other and stayed that way for a long time. “I thought I’d redeem my promise now.” Viggo whispered, held Orlando’s face and kissed him. Life had shown him once again there were things to fight for, things he wouldn’t let go.
