A lively conversation filled the air around an oval dining table, everything from the excellent roast Viggo had made to Viggo’s forthcoming projects. Orlando stayed quieter than the rest. Sure, he took part in the conversations every now and then but he didn’t start any himself. His back was bugging him. Because of the punch he had received earlier he had hit the wall and somehow managed to twist the muscles. On top of everything, he now realized he had left his painkillers at home in London. He was pulled back into reality by Viggo’s mother, Grace.
“Hmmm?”
“Do you have any upcoming projects?”
Orlando swallowed the piece of meat he had absentmindedly chewed for a while now before answering. “No. There’s none. I felt like I needed a break.”
“Orlando was instantly pulled into show business after the main shoots were over. He’s been working almost non-stop ever since. I think he deserves a long vacation,” Viggo said softly looking at Orlando. Concern was evident on his face nonetheless. He sensed Orlando’s discomfort and knew Orlando didn’t want to leave the table no matter how much he hurt.
The moment seemed to last a small eternity. Some were still finishing their desserts when Orlando stood up, apologising profusely. He piled his dishes carefully, took them to the kitchen gritting his teeth and helped others clear the table. Finally the pain in his back was too much and he slipped to the porch at the back to get some fresh air. He leaned against the railing taking deep breaths and closed his eyes. If he could concentrate on the pain for a few minutes he might manage to lessen it.
The sky was clear and filled with stars. The air was cool. He could hear the horses a short distance away. Orlando tried to stretch his muscles but that didn’t help any more. The pain was becoming so unbearable it laboured his breathing. Gritting his teeth he tried to take deep breaths. Sean Bean came out attempting to smoke but Orlando’s presence stole his interest.
“Blimey, Orlando! Are you okay?”
Orlando nodded and gripped the railing a bit tighter. “Soon. It’ll pass.”
“Is there anything I could do to help?”
“Thanks for the kind offer but there’s nothing really that could help me right now...other than painkillers. And of course I left mine in London.”
“What if I asked Viggo if he has any here?”
“Would you do that?”
“Of course, lad.”
“Thanks, Beanie. I appreciate that.”
Bean tried to find Viggo as soon as possible. “You have any painkillers here? Orlando needs them.”
“How bad is he?” Viggo asked, going to a cabinet and opening the door.
“I don’t think I have ever seen him as bad as he is now.” Viggo closed the cabinet door looking at Beanie and poured a glass of the juice Orlando loved so much.
He peeked out the back door. Orlando was cursing colourful strings in the air holding his back with one hand, the other gripping the railing. “Orli?” Viggo started stepping out. “I brought you painkillers. Beanie told me.” Orlando only nodded. “I just hope you are not allergic to these.” He showed the package to Orlando.
“I used to take those before I got what I now take. Could you give me two? That used to be my prescription.”
Viggo did as Orlando asked, handing him the pills and the glass of juice. Tenderly he placed his open palm on Orlando’s back. The muscles were like steel against his hand. “I could give you a massage...” he offered.
“On your birthday? I’ll be just fine, Vig. As much as I like the thought I don’t want to deprive you of your friends you haven’t seen in years.”
“You are one of them...” Viggo insisted.
“I know, but like you said, one. You have a living room full of those friends. I’ll join you soon. Some other time, yeah?”
Viggo was berating himself in his mind for inviting all the others. Orlando would have been enough. And now that he was near, Viggo found himself wanting to spend more time with him. Alone. Viggo shook his head before turning back to Orlando. “I’ll be inside. Just give me a yell if you need anything, okay?” Viggo grinned and Orlando nodded a small smile on his face.
After the pain had returned back to a level he could stand Orlando took his glass and went back in. In an instant he was surrounded by people. Everyone wanted to know if he was alright. Everyone except Viggo. Viggo stayed a few feet away. From a small hole between Elijah’s head and Grace’s armpit Orlando saw Viggo was smiling.
“Okay, folks. I think that’s enough,” Ian said, his louder tone quieting the others. “Let’s not squeeze him to death, shall we?”
Orlando let out a sigh of relief as he straightened his clothes. “I’m fine. My back just didn’t like the...um...impact earlier. And thanks, Vig, for the pills. Thanks Beanie for asking for them for me.”
Viggo pushed himself away from the wall he had been leaning against and came to Orlando. “Are you sure you are feeling okay?”
“Yes.” The answer was not much louder than a whisper.
Carefully Viggo grabbed Orlando’s jaw and lifted his head up a little so that their eyes could meet. “You scared me, you know.”
“Sorry. I didn’t mean it. The pain surprised me too. I feel so stupid for leaving my own pills in London.”
“There’s no need to worry about it, Orlando. If all is well now then that’s what matters.”
“I can stand the pain now. But really, thank you so much.”
