AN: This isn’t going to be a long one…just an in and out (ahem) couple of chapters. It’s pretty angsty, as with just about everything I write, so be forewarned.

Golden 1

Dominic was completely charged. It was pretty hard for him to comprehend that just one short year ago he was nearly destitute and living off the good graces of his friends. Now, here he was, in the LA area again, ready to make an appearance at a Lord of the Rings convention with Billy and Elijah and Sean and tomorrow, he’d travel into Beverly Hills to attend the prestigious Golden Globe Awards. His new television show was up for an award for Best Dramatic Show. Jesus. What a difference a year makes!

There were rumors flying around that Orlando would be at the award ceremony, also, there to introduce The Aviator for Best Drama Film. Tobey McGuire had dropped out at the last minute and the producers had contacted Orlando, who was more than happy to oblige. Dom hadn’t seen Orli in months. It was getting harder and harder to get in touch with the elf. Seemed his life was being taken over by publicists and agents. The last time Dom had tried to ring him, the number had been cut off.

“So,” Dom said, as casually as he could, “has anyone heard from Orli lately?”

Elijah looked warily over at his friend. “Nah. I think he’s gotten too big for us anymore.” Elijah was well aware that Dom had been in love with Orlando throughout the Ring’s filming. But Orlando only had eyes for Viggo. Dominic and Orlando were just about to the point of intimacy when Viggo showed up to take Stuart’s place as Aragorn. Well, Dominic was nearly to the point of intimacy, anyway. Orlando didn’t have a clue that his friend had fallen in love with him.

Elijah suspected that Viggo had bedded Orlando before Viggo’s first day on set was over.

Dominic, of course, was broken hearted, but he’d learned long ago that beautiful men like Orlando rarely fell for someone like him. He worked hard to not make the friendship suffer, but that was pretty impossible. Elijah hated what Dom had gone through. He didn’t blame Orlando and he didn’t blame Viggo. It’s just the way it was. The heart wants what the heart wants. That’s a great saying, as long as both hearts feel the same way. When it doesn’t, it’s hell.

Elijah wanted to stay in town until after the Golden Globes, but he was obligated to go back to Vancouver for filming the morning of the show. Billy had left for Scotland late Saturday night, after some pretty wild partying. It wasn’t often anymore that all the hobbits got together for any length of time, so they had wanted to make this night memorable. Of course, Dominic attempted to contact Orlando through his agent, but he’d been told that Orlando was ‘unavailable’. Well, at least he’d see his old friend the next night. He had been worried about the elf for quite some time, and so had the other three men. Industry rumor was that Orlando was starting to kick up a fuss about having a beard and was getting hard to handle. There had also been some nasty rumors about his excessive drinking and/or drug use. Dominic was surprised at that. Orlando was never much of a drinker, even in New Zealand when everyone else was falling down drunk around him. And the drug talk was just as unbelievable. Except for some pot, Dom had never seen Orlando use anything.

But, then there were the painkillers that Orlando pretty much had to take for his back.

The one thing that bothered them all the most was the talk of a suicide attempt. They’d heard about it from one of those British rags and the rumor was squashed before it even hit the states, but it was still worrisome. If there was one thing that Dominic knew was when you feel down, you need the support and love of your friends. And it seemed to Dom that Orlando had separated himself from all the friends he had before he was famous. Now, the only people that Orlando was ever seen with were other ‘Hollywood types’ and, of course, Kate.

It was always clear from the start that Sean was jealous of Orlando. It was pretty clear to everyone that, if anyone broke through in these films, it would be Orli. Even Pete had said in an interview that when he’d first seen Orlando’s audition tape, he knew he’d hit gold. It was hard for someone like Sean, who grew up in a film family and had been making his living in the film industry since he was a child, knowing he’d never reach the stardom that Orlando would. After all, Orlando was a beautiful kid.

Even before filming began, Sean was talking trash about Orlando behind his back. When Viggo showed up and the two had hooked up, it simply gave Sean more ammunition. The first time that Dom had a fight with anyone from the set was with Sean over Orlando. Once the Ranger and the elf had settled in with one another, Sean saw how crushing it was to Dom and decided that it was okay to say whatever he wanted about Orli. He started to infer that Orlando was only interested in Viggo because he thought it might further his career. Of course, everyone knew that Viggo wouldn’t have been the one that Orlando would let fuck for that. Besides, it was clear to anyone with eyes in their head that the kid was in awe of the older actor.

If Billy wasn’t there when it happened, Dom was certain he would have decked Sean. The fact that he and Orli would never get together was accepted by Dominic’s head, but his heart still loved the man. And no one- not even Samwise Gamgee himself- could talk about a friend of Dom’s like that.

There was a feeling of electricity in the air on the day of the Golden Globes. Dominic was so excited about his show being nominated and there was even some talk that it had a good chance of winning. It wasn’t hard for him to dress for the night, as he’d only packed one nice outfit for both the convention and the awards show. He had wanted to bring someone along, but he was told that there was only so much room at the Lost table and that a couple of his costars from the show would be there with him. So he called Evangelina and asked her if she wanted to drive in with him. He really did hate going to events like this alone, although he had often enough. She was happy to oblige, feeling much the same as he did about showing up solo.

He was only there thirty minutes before he spotted Orlando. Looking thin, tired and unusually pale, Orli had taken a place towards the rear in the ‘A’ section. He was sitting with Nicole Kidman, Ewan MacGregor and, of all people, Fergie, Duchess of York.
Dominic could barely keep his eyes off Orlando. There was obviously something wrong. He appeared to be very quiet, and seemed to only be talking to Sarah. Dom noticed Orlando smile several times, but it wasn’t the smile he’d grown to love while they were in New Zealand. There was something off; something wrong.

When Orlando came onstage and introduced The Aviator, he got a tremendous round of applause. Yet, he seemed nervous and overly serious. When the show was over Dom slowly made his way over to his friend. Even Dom wasn’t prepared for the reaction he got. Orlando went from flat to fluffy in seconds upon seeing his former costar.

“Dommie! Dommie!” Orlando shouted, forgetting for a moment that he was at a formal awards show. Grabbing Dominic and holding him tightly, Orlando whispered in Dom’s ear, “Oh, Dommie, it’s so good to see you, mate.” Pushing away for a moment, Orlando said brightly, “ Come to the party with me tonight. I’d love to have you with me. I’ve missed you so much.” Then he pulled Dom against his body once again.

The Miramar party was the party to go to and Dom was flattered that the burly man at the door has recognized him and stepped aside to allow him to enter. Of course it probably didn’t hurt that Orlando Bloom had a hold of Dom like if he let go, he’d loose him. People kept calling Orlando’s name, but he never once left Dominic’s side. It didn’t take long, though, for Orlando to start drinking. There was liquor everywhere and, although that made Dom near delirious with joy, it unnerved him to see Orlando drinking so much of it.
By the end of the night, Dom was, quite frankly, surprised to see Orlando still standing.

It was just past two am when Dominic decided that he’d seen enough. Grabbing Orlando around the shoulder, he whispered loudly in Orlando’s ear, “Let’s get out of here, elf. I want to talk to you and I can’t hear a bloody thing you’re sayin’.”

Orlando turned around to face Dom and placed a wet kiss to Dom’s mouth.
“Sure, hobbit. Let’s go back to mine.”

The cab ride back to Orlando’s place was quiet. Orlando had fallen into a fitful sleep the minute he stumbled into the dark interior of the taxi. Dominic struggled with Orlando to get him out of the back of the cab and into his rented house. As he flicked on the light, Dom was surprised to see how Orlando had been living. The place was a mess; things throw around and trash laying about everywhere. There were some broken plates and glasses in shards on the kitchen floor. It looked as if Orlando had either been ransacked or had angrily caused the damage himself. On the bar that separated the kitchen from the living room was a bottle of Vodka, lying on its side, the contents spilled in a puddle around the glasses surrounding it.

“Orlando, mate, what’s goin’ on with you?”

Orlando staggered over to the sofa and flopped down heavily.
“Come on, Dommie. Don’t fuss with me. Come over here. I thought you wanted to talk.”

Shaking his head, Dom came over to the couch and sat down beside his friend.
“I just don’t understand, Orli. Did you do all this?”

Without opening his eyes, Orlando sighed, “Yeah. Yeah, I guess I did.”

After a few minutes of silence from both men, Dominic finally turned to Orlando.

“Is there something I can help you with, Orli?”

Orlando looked over at Dom and smiled sadly. “Yeah, there is.” He reached over and put his hand on the back of Dom’s neck, pulling Dominic’s face to his. They looked at each other for a few moments, breathing one another’s breath, before Dom leaned the rest of the way in and kissed Orlando gently. At least he started the kiss that way. It took absolutely no time at all before they were passionately kissing and touching each other, writhing on the couch like a couple of teenagers.

When Dom woke up the next morning, he was laying in bed next to a naked and warm Orlando, who was snoring lightly, flat on his stomach.
“Jesus Christ,” Dom mumbled as he realized what he and Orlando had done last night. He carefully pushed the covers off himself and climbed out of the bed, turning to gently cover Orlando up again. Crouching down to look into Orlando’s face, Dom was surprised to see how peaceful the beautiful man looked, even after the night they’d had. He walked over to the living room and numbly lit up a cigarette. He was half way through the thing before he realized that he was even smoking. He hadn’t had a cigarette since before the filming for Lord of the Rings began. He ran his hands across his face and had the sudden urge to cry. He vaguely remembered that in the midst of Orlando’s passion, Orli had screamed out a name. And it wasn’t Dom’s.

Sighing heavily he began to sit back into the chair when someone knocking at the front door caused him to jump. He quickly made his way past the mess in the living room, gingerly trying to avoid stepping on something that may cause pain. He wasn’t ready to face Orlando yet, so he wanted to stop the racket as quickly as he could.

He flung the door open wide and came face-to-face with Viggo.
“Dom!” Viggo said happily. “What the fuck are you doing here, man?” He grabbed Dom in a tight embrace before pulling back. “You’ve been smoking. When did that start?”

“I, uh…”

“Where’s Orlando anyway?” Viggo said as he pushed his way into the house.

Dom followed him nervously. “He’s, uh, still asleep. He had a bit too much last night, I think.”

Viggo looked at Dom seriously. “Yeah, well…” He started to finger the bottle on the bar anxiously. “Did he sleep alone last night, Dom?”

Dominic froze where he stood. He knew he couldn’t possibly lie to Viggo. But he didn’t want to get Orlando into trouble, either.

“Well, I guess your silence pretty much answers the question,” Viggo said sadly. “How was he Dom? Is he good when he’s drunk? ‘Cause he’s a pistol when he’s sober.” Viggo’s voice had taken on a menacing tone. Dominic still didn’t know what to do; how to handle this highly uncomfortable situation.

“I think it would be best if you’d go now, Dom,” Viggo finally spoke, clearly keeping his anger in check.

Dom nodded and grabbed his jacket as he cautiously walked past Viggo. As he reached the door, he stopped and said without turning around, “I’m sorry, man. He was so out of it…he didn’t mean…”

“Goodbye, Dominic.”
