Chapter 3

Sean waited patiently outside the restaurant for Viggo to show, looking to his watch and frowning. It was after eight and he was beginning to wonder if he had been stood up. He walked inside the restaurant and checked on the progress for their seating.

Another five minutes the woman had told him. He didn’t understand why this place didn’t take reservations on Friday and Saturday night, it was the most insane thing. Just then he spotted Viggo rushing through the door looking flushed.

“Viggo, mate,” he called as he walked up to his friend. “I was beginning to wonder about you,” he said as he clapped the man on the back.

“Sorry, I’m running late Sean,” he said. “How long is the wait?”

“You’re lucky I got here so early. It will only be another five minutes or so.” He looked his friend over with a critical eye. “You’re looking awfully dressed up Vig,” he said with a sly grin. “I didn’t know this was a date?”

Viggo rolled his eyes at his friend, knowing he was teasing. “I didn’t,” he replied. And it isn’t.”

“You sure about that?” he grinned again as he leaned against Viggos frame, rubbing his shoulder teasingly.

“Sean!” he swatted his friend away. “People will talk.”

Seam laughed, “Like that’s ever stopped you before. Do these things go off when it’s our turn? he asked holding the round disc up and looking it over carefully.

“Yeah, the lights go around and it kind of…vibrates,” he replied flushing slightly.

“Vibrates you say? He grinned as he inspected the item closer.

“Give me that!” he cried as he grabbed the item from his friend and clung to it tightly.

Sean leaned back against the wall and laughed quietly at his irritated friend. He could wind Viggo up so easily and it was so much fun he couldn’t help himself sometimes.

Just then the lights blinked on the disc and Viggo almost dropped the device as he hurried up to the hostess and handed it to her.

“This way,” she said with a smile and walked back into the dimly lit restaurant.

Viggo gazed along the way as they were escorted back to a small niche. He pulled out his chair and sat opposite of Sean, his back to the wall so he could see the waiters as they would come and go in and out of the kitchen for the night.

She handed each one of them a menu and took the extra glasses of the table. “Have a lovely meal,” she smiled. “Orlando will be right with you, he will be your server for the evening.”

Viggo felt his face flush his heart started hammering in his chest. What were the chances of getting him as their server?

“You okay Vig?” asked Sean as he noticed his friends flushing cheeks. “You look a little flushed.”

“Yeah, fine, it’s just kind of warm in here don’t you think?” he replied nervously.

“Not at all,” he replied as he laid down his menu.

“Maybe I am just warm from trying to hurry to get here. I’ll be fine.”

“If you say so.”

Viggo spotted Orlando coming their way, his heart leaping madly inside his chest, his hands started to sweat profusely.

Orlando smiled as he noticed the older man had returned and so soon too. “Dr. Mortensen,” he greeted. So nice to see you here again so soon!”

Viggos brain was working overtime as he tried to think of something normal to say but his brain had gone dead for a second.

Orlando smiled again shifting where he stood. “Would you like something to drink?” he asked quietly, looking from Viggo to Sean.

“I’ll have some white wine,” Sean said as he looked at the charming young man. “Vig?” he asked looking over at his friend.

Viggo swallowed and nodded. “Yes that sounds fine” he replied, his voice suddenly raspy his mouth feeling dry as cotton.

“I’ll be right back then!” he said cheerfully as he walked away quickly.

Viggo watched as the young man left to fill their drink order.

“So,” Sean spoke up. “Why did you really ask me here for Viggo?”

“I told you Sean, I wanted to try this new dish.”

Sean shook his head in disbelief. “Viggo, we’ve known each other for a very long time, and I can read you like an open book! You don’t lie well at all.”

Viggo looked down, feeling disappointed that he lied and had been caught in doing so, and so quickly too.

“Are you going to tell me what it is? Or do I have to guess?” he asked sitting back in his chair grinning.

“Sean,” Viggo began, but was interrupted by Orlando bringing their drinks back.

Orlando leaned over and placed Sean’s glass down and then went over to Viggo to set the other glass down. He moved slower this time and sat the glass down carefully his body almost touching Viggo’s. Viggo could feel the heat radiating off the young man and could smell his cologne as he leaned in, he breathed the scent in deeply, his eyes closing slightly at the wonderful smell. He swallowed hard and whispered “Thank you.”

Orlando stood back and smiled. “Have you decided what you wanted?” he asked. “Or do you need a couple more minutes to decide?”

“I’m ready,” Sean said eagerly. “Vig?"

“Yeah sure, go ahead first Sean.”

Sean ordered quickly and efficiently and Orlando turned to face Viggo. “Dr. Mortensen?” he asked.

“Viggo,” he said looking up and smiled.” Please, call me Viggo.”

Orlando smiled in return. “Viggo then…What can I get you, same as last night?”

Viggo snorted and thought to himself, ‘I don’t think that’s on the menu!’ “Um I think I’ll have that new dish you have, the Crostina?”

“Oh, that is a good choice,” Orlando commented with a smile. “It’s quite tasty! Excellent choice, it’s one of my favorites, I’ll get your order right in,” he smiled and took the offered menus from the two men, his fingers brushing Viggos as he handed his to Orlando. He could feel the warmth radiating from the mans hand and it sent slight shivers down his spine. “I’ll be right back.”

Viggos gaze followed Orlando as he went back to start their order.

Sean’s gaze followed Viggos gaze and his eyes widened in surprise at his friend, his mouth dropping open in shock.

“Viggo!”

“Viggo!” he said again when he got no reply.

Viggo blinked his eyes, tearing them away from the slender figure.

“Huh, what?” he asked, not paying much attention.

Sean leaned forward and lowered his voice grabbing Viggo’s arm firmly. “What the hell do you think you are doing?” he asked his voice low so others would not hear.

“What do you mean?” he asked surprised by his friend’s sudden anger.

“Don’t fuck with me Vig,” he spat. “I see now why I was invited to dinner. Is it because of him?” He asked nodding Orlando’s way.

Viggo felt his blood run cold. “Sean."

“I don’t want to be dragged into something like this,” he growled.

“It’s nothing Sean,” Viggo whispered desperately. “I just….I just wanted to see him again.”

Sean rubbed his eyes. “Viggo, I thought that was behind you. You’re married now remember, or have your forgotten?”

“Don’t you think I know that?” he hissed back jerking his arm away.

“I thought you and Chloe were happy. Did something happen?” he asked shaking his head in confusion.

“It’s hard to explain Sean,” Viggo said suddenly feeling the wind knocked out of him. “I love Chloe, I really do, but I’m not in love with her anymore. Our marriage is more of a routine now. The sparks, well, they have been gone for quite sometime.”

“Is there someone else?’ Sean asked. “Are you seeing someone already?”

“No!” he said quickly. “No there’s one else.”

Sean jerked his head in Orlando’s direction, “What about him? Are you fucking him yet?”

“I told you no Sean,” he said desperately. “I just saw him for the first time last night!”

“But you want to fuck him don’t you,” Sean stated bluntly.

Viggo lowered his head. “Sean, I….” he said quietly.

“Why Viggo?” Sean asked with a sigh when he didn’t confirm or deny. “Why rock the boat? Why with someone so much younger, and so much more…male.”

Orlando came back to the table then with their breadsticks and salad. He had been hesitant to return with them for he saw how the men were in a heated exchange of words. He saw that Viggo looked frustrated and the other man looked down right pissed off.

“Here’s your breadsticks,” he said quietly setting them down. Following it with the plates for the salad. “Cheese on your salad?” he asked looking from one man to the next. Sean sat there looking at the breadsticks, a frown on his handsome face. Viggo nodded and replied, “Yes please” so softly Orlando had barely heard him.

Orlando grated the cheese over the bowl of salad and glanced between the two men as neither said a word.

“Dinner will be out shortly,” he said moving away from the table a little. “Is there anything else you need right now?”

“We’re fine,” answered Viggo looking at him with a smile, albeit not as he would of liked to.

“Fine,” muttered Sean under his breath.

“Okay then,” Orlando nodded. “I’ll be back.” He turned and walked quickly away from table, and the tension that was so apparent between the two men.

~

Orlando walked over to the bar and stared across the room at the two men. He wondered what the fight was about? For apparently they were having words compared to how they were when they had first arrived.

“Hey Lando,” Billy said from beside him. “What are you looking at?” he asked as he noticed his friend’s intense stare.

“Remember the guy I told you about last night? The good looking one? That’s him over there,” he said pointing in Viggos direction.

Billy gazed over the restaurant and found the table he was pointing at. Which one?” he asked. “They are both good looking.”

“The one in the blue shirt.”

“Oh okay, but I’d say they don’t look very happy,” Billy observed.

“I know, they were fine when they sat down, but something happened between when I took their drink order and came back to serve it.”

“Did you say something rude?” he asked.

“No! I was very polite. He looks so upset,” Orlando sighed as he looked at Viggo.

“Best stay out of it Lan,” he said as he grabbed his drink order. “Remember, he was with a woman in here just last night.”

“I know Billy, I just…I just can’t explain why I feel so attracted to him.”

Billy only could shake his head and walked away with a tray full of cocktails.

~

“That was totally uncalled for Sean,” Viggo spat as soon as Orlando was out of earshot, shooting his friend a dirty look.

“What?”

“There’s no reason to treat him like that. He hasn’t done anything wrong.”

“Not yet,” he answered sarcastically.

“He won’t either Sean, there’s nothing wrong with looking.”

“No there’s not, but there is a difference between looking and trying it on for size!”

Viggo pursed his lips together tightly. Not wanting to say anything that he might regret later. He knew Sean was right. He knew he shouldn’t even be looking. It wasn’t like he had planned this. Well tonight he had planned it, but last night was a chance encounter that he couldn’t even begin to explain. He couldn’t explain how something had stirred within him at the sight of Orlando. How taken with the young man he was.

“Let's juts drop it okay Sean. I don’t want to get into an argument with you here in a public place,” he muttered under his breath, hoping Sean would be civil.

“Fine, but we will talk about this,” came the sharp answer back. Sean took a swift drink of his wine setting it down firmly on the table in front of him, the liquid splashing almost out of the glass.

Viggo sat back and observed his friend as he sipped his own wine. He thought maybe he might need something a little stronger to make it through the rest of the evening.

Orlando arrived just then with a tray full of hot food. He placed each plate down quietly and asked if there was anything else they needed.

“Can I get a scotch please,” Viggo asked as he glanced up and tried not to make to much eye contact with Orlando, not giving Sean anymore reason to get pissed at him.

“Yeah sure,” he smiled. He looked over at Sean. “Sir?” he asked.

“I’m fine, thank you,” he replied much more civil this time.

“I’ll be right back then with your scotch.”

Viggo picked up his fork and took a bite of the dish he had ordered. His appetite was gone, but he took the bites anyway to keep from having to talk to Sean.

Sean apparently had the same idea and shoved the food in his mouth quickly. Trying to hurry so he could leave and get himself out of this uncomfortable situation he had found himself in.

“Here’s your scotch sir,”

Viggo looked up expecting to see Orlando but was greeted by someone else instead.

The waiter placed the glass down and asked if there was anything else they needed.

Viggo replied they were fine. But Sean spoke up and asked for his check, he was ready to go.

Billy eyed the men curiously. Orlando was right there was definite tension going on. But he was happy to get the man his check. “I’ll be right back sir,” he said and took off to find Orlando, not wanting his friend to face the difficulty of the situation. He would take care of their bill when it was time to pay. What were friends for anyway?

It wasn’t long before the bill arrived, in fact, it was within minutes. Sean dug into his pocket and pulled his wallet out and threw some money on the table. He stood up abruptly and told Viggo goodnight and to keep his pants zipped up, if he thought that wasn’t too much to ask.

Viggo sat quietly and dropped his head into his hands. God that didn’t go well he thought. He picked up the scotch and downed it quickly. Feeling the slow burn in his throat as he closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh.

Orlando watched the exchange from within the bar as Billy had taken care of the situation for him. He felt like a chicken but he didn’t know what else to do.

“He’s gone,” Billy said as he slid next to Orlando at the bar.

“Did he say anything?” he asked quietly.

“Which one?” he asked.

“Either, it doesn’t matter.”

“No. Why don’t you go talk to him Lan?” he asked bumping his friends shoulder.

Orlando grimaced, “I don’t know. You think I should?”

“It can’t hurt anything,”

Orlando nodded and slid off the stool and readied Viggos part of the bill. He walked over to the table slowly to gauge how the man was.

“Viggo,” he said quietly as he laid a hand on his shoulder.

Viggo jerked at the sudden touch, his head shooting up in surprise. He felt the warmth of the slender hand still lying on his shoulder.

“Hey, sorry about my friend. He was rather rude tonight. He’s usually nicer,” he smiled.

“It’s fine, really. Is there anything else you need before we close?”

“Is it that late already?” he asked looking at his watch for the time. “I’d better pay and get out of here so you can get home; I’m sure you’re exhausted.”

“Don’t worry about it, I was here very late last night, but here’s your bill let me know when you’re ready.”

“I have it now if that okay?” he asked as he handed him his card.

Orlando took the offered American Express. “This looks familiar,” he grinned.

“I’ll try not to forget it tonight. Promise,” he said grinning.

“I wouldn’t let you,” Orlando replied back with an equally charming smile. “I will be right back.”

Viggo was feeling better knowing Orlando wasn’t too upset by Sean’s rude behavior. He knew it was his fault too and he would leave a good enough tip to show it.

Viggo put his jacket back on and was searching for Orlando when the young man brought his card back. He handed the card to Viggo directly. “So you don’t forget it,” he said grinning.

“Thanks Orlando, and again I’m sorry about tonight,” he apologized sincerely.

“No worries mate; I hope you’ll still come back.”

Viggo smiled and looked down. “Yeah, maybe,” he said and turned and walked down the hallway to the doors. He stepped out in the cool night air and breathed deeply. God he needed a smoke. He had quit years ago, and he didn’t feel it right for him to tell his patients to quit while he was still puffing away. But as it was he didn’t have any on him anyway. He sat down on the concrete block outside the restaurant and thought about Orlando. God what was he supposed to do? Just forget about the young man? Pretend he never met him. Go back to living the lie of a marriage with his wife? Too many questions. Too many what ifs? He ran his hands through his hair as he tried to decide what he should do.

Just then Orlando came out the door with the young man that had helped settle Sean’s bill. Viggo watched from just behind them. Trying not to listen.

“You have time for a smoke Billy?” Orlando asked.

“Sorry I gotta go tonight,” he said. “Sorry, I know you need to talk, but can I call you tomorrow?”

“Sure,” Orlando nodded as he pulled out his pack of cigarettes placing it between his soft lips and lighting it quickly and watching as Billy walked away. Orlando cursed silently to himself.

“Do you have an extra a customer could borrow?” he heard the raspy voice behind him. Orlando would know that raspy sexy voice anywhere. He turned around and smiled as he saw Viggo leaning against the wall.
