Orlando squinted intensely at Viggo as they left the optometry shop. “Are you sure you’re okay with this?”
Viggo squeezed Orlando’s hand where it crooked around Viggo’s elbow. “I’m sure,” he smiled. “After all, I’m partly to blame. And it’s certainly no hardship to have to walk around at the mall with an adorably near-sighted man on my arm.”
Orlando blushed furiously at the floor as they shuffled past a shopper pushing a double-stroller. Well, it was either a double-stroller or a really big lawnmower, so yeah, probably a stroller. Wow, Viggo was nice.
“We’ve got an hour before the new frames are ready,” Viggo said. “Want to grab some lunch?”
Orlando squinted and nodded.
=geek!flashback=
The two of them lay there just catching their breath for several minutes. Orlando found himself smiling up at the ceiling, feeling shockingly relaxed.
“Mmm,” Viggo mmm’ed. “Would you like stay here tonight?”
Orlando blinked. “Um…. here?”
“Well, you could have this side of the bed if you’d prefer.” Viggo smiled. “But yeah, here. If you want to.”
Orlando didn’t have to work tomorrow. And it sounded really nice, the idea of sleeping next to a big, warm, smiling Viggo.
But he didn’t have a toothbrush. And he didn’t have his sound machine. What if he couldn’t sleep without the relaxing echoes of Rain or Tropical Forest or the soothing blue light on the ceiling?
Viggo pushed the issue a little, slanting his lips over Orlando’s, stroking Orlando’s chest with the backs of his knuckles. It felt wonderful.
“Thokay,” Orlando slurped into Viggo’s mouth.
Viggo grinned. “Be right back.” He rolled off the bed. Orlando could hear him running the tap in the bathroom.
Wow. He’d made Viggo come – well… sort of. But it counted. Right? – and now he was going to sleep at Viggo’s house. All night. Tonight. Now.
Orlando gave in to the urge to feel around his jaw, his chin. Well, it seemed like it was growing, anyway.
He sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed.
>CRUNCH<
Uh oh.
Oh no. Not again.
Darn it!
He looked up woefully when Viggo entered the bedroom with – what was that? Oh, it was a warm washcloth Viggo was handing him.
“Here, want to clean up a bit? I’ll get this,” Viggo said, and bent to retrieve the broken bits of plastic and the two still-intact lenses.
Naked Viggo was bent over in front of him. Orlando really wished he could see right now.
“It’s too late to do anything about these tonight,” Viggo said. “How about I take you to get them fixed tomorrow?”
“Oh… um, you don’t have to do that,” Orlando blinked.
Viggo climbed into bed and burrowed under the covers. “S’alright, I’d be happy to,” he yawned. “If you need anything in the night – water, juice, whatever – just help yourself. Or wake me. Okay?”
=end geek!flashback=
They made the long trek to the food court at the other end of the mall, Viggo leading and Orlando shuffling blindly. It was nice to have an excuse to hold Viggo’s arm. It was nice to have an excuse to hold Viggo’s anything.
Viggo planted Orlando carefully in a seat in the food court and left him to wait while Viggo fetched their food. Orlando thought it was weird how he was able to feel his way around his bedroom and bathroom at home just fine, but out here in the mall without his glasses, everything was kind of intimidating. Well, more than usual. At least he could hear the deep, relaxing tones of Viggo’s voice as he ordered Orlando’s sandwich: plain bread, turkey, American cheese, a little mayo, nothing else, please. Otherwise he’d have felt totally isolated. Sort of like in that one Star Trek movie, where that poor giant Tootsie Roll floated in space all alone, shrieking out speeded-up whale noises. He could never remember which number movie that was.
Viggo was back, smiling – Orlando thought he was, anyway – and he had smoothies, too. “I’ve got a chocolate-peanut butter and a strawberry-mango. Which one sounds good?” Viggo asked.
“Wow, I - … I love chocolate-peanut butter!” Orlando smiled.
“I sort of pegged you for a chocolate-peanut butter man,” Viggo said.
Huh.
They dove into their sandwiches. Every once in a while, Orlando sneaked a squint at Viggo. Finally he got up the nerve to speak.
“So, um… last night… when we – …” Orlando started.
“Mm-hm?” Viggo encouraged.
“Why didn’t we… uh – you know…” Orlando thought his face might burn right off.
“A few reasons, I guess,” Viggo said. “I meant what I said last night. I like you, Orlando. I don’t want to make you nervous by going too far, too fast. I’d hate to have Elijah show up at my door again.” He grinned.
Orlando blushed.
“And I wasn’t sure you were feeling at ease at my house last night,” Viggo continued. “You’re a wonderful guy. Your first time should be wonderful, too. And that can only happen if you’re relaxed. I was thinking maybe we should wait a bit, choose a place where you’re comfortable, and then just take things as they come –“
“Buffalo!” Orlando burst out.
Viggo looked at him. “Buffalo?”
“Yeah – er, um… sorry,” Orlando stammered. “My roommate. He’s gone for the weekend. To Buffalo.”
“Ah,” Viggo acknowledged with a nod.
“So we could… um… would you… oh god - …” Orlando stuttered. “I could make dinner. For you. Well, for me, too. For both of us.
“I would love to come to your place for dinner tonight, Orlando.” Viggo smiled. He reached out and covered Orlando’s hand with a gentle squeeze.
Orlando squinted. Viggo looked happy, he was pretty sure. Orlando smiled.
Yay! He was going to make dinner for Viggo tonight!
Oh god. He was going to make dinner for Viggo tonight.
And then they were going to –
Oh god.
