Prologue
Orlando fell back into the soft grass. The unmistakable smell of spring filled his nose and his lips curled into a smile. It was one of the first warm days of the year but Orlando couldn’t fully enjoy it. He was bored, very bored. His mother and sisters were fussing over some new clothes and the upcoming travel to Denmark.
Orlando wrinkled his nose. He couldn’t understand what was so important about dresses or this stupid journey. The summer was finally coming, that was really important!
Orlando hated the winter. It was always cold inside the castle and the days were nearly as dark as the nights. Now that it was summer, he could finally be outside again. Orlando wished that his favourite sister Samantha could be with him as well. She’d surely love the four little kittens he found earlier in the haymow. Orlando sighed. At the thought of his sister, the day seemed to darken. She was going to marry some high aristocrat – Orlando always forgot if it was a prince, king, or emperor - this summer and his whole family was fussing over it. His mother and Samantha would be travelling to Denmark in a few days to attend a ball where this man would officially propose to his sister. Orlando blinked away his tears in frustration. He didn’t want her to leave. Why couldn’t Kate or Liv marry this man?
“Orlando?!”
The voice of his nursemaid, Julia, startled Orlando from his thoughts and he sat up.
“Orlando what are you doing here? Look at your clothes!”
Orlando looked down and discovered some grass stains on his white linen garments.
“Oh.” The brunette flashed his nursemaid a guilty smile. Her features seemed to soften, just like always.
Orlando was the youngest of eight siblings and on top of that, the only boy so he could mostly do what he wanted with no one being angry with him for long. He just had to smile and all anger was forgotten. Only his father wouldn’t fall for his charming nature and would scold him when necessary. That didn’t dampen Orlando’s spirits at all. He loved his family, had a cheerful character, and would’ve embraced the whole world if he could.
“I’m sorry nanny.” Orlando stood up and twisted to see if there were grass stains on his backside as well.
“Don’t worry lovey. You can change your clothes later, your mother wants to talk with you.”
Orlando twisted his mouth in concentration as he reflected on the past few days. No he hadn’t done anything that could have disappointed his mother.
While he was lost in thought Julia started to pick some blades of grass from Orlando’s unruly chocolate curls and tried to make them look somewhat decent.
“You are looking like a gypsy.”
Orlando giggled before he kissed Julia on the cheek.
“You’ve been telling me that since I was five years old.”
“It hasn’t changed since then. Now go; don’t let your mother wait.”
Orlando flashed Julia another smile before he ran towards the castle. Julia shook her head. Sometimes Orlando acted like he was five years old instead of fifteen. Still, there was something about him that made it impossible not to like him.

Sonia looked up when the door to the room was thrown open and not surprisingly, her son stormed into the room. His cheeks where flushed from the fast run and his curls tousled. She raised her eyebrow when she noted the green stains on the white linen clothes but didn’t comment on it. She wouldn’t have had the time anyways as she found herself with an armful of Orlando seconds later.
“You wanted to talk to me?” Orlando kissed his mother on both cheeks before he hugged Samantha who was sitting in the chair next to her mother.
“Yes. Sit down first Lando, will you?” Sonia smiled when she watched Orlando dropping into a chair. Like always, his energy seemed to fill the whole room and his joy made her smile.
“Well like always your father found an excuse so that he doesn’t have to travel with us. I thought you’d like to take his place instead.” Sonia could tell exactly what Orlando was thinking. What he felt and thought was always visible in his eyes. He hated travelling because he couldn’t sit still for long but on the other hand coming with them would be exciting as well.
Orlando wrinkled his nose and Sonia tried not to laugh.
“So?”
“Hm…it sounds interesting.”
“Oh Lando, come on. You can’t leave me all alone there. After all I need your opinion on my husband to be.” Samantha smiled at her younger brother and Sonia recognized once more how similar they were.
Orlando sighed in defeat before he nodded.
“Alright I’ll accompany you.”
“Good, the tailor is still here so he can take your measurements.” Sonia added quickly, hoping that Orlando would not pay too much attention to it until she had dragged him to the tailor. Her hope was destroyed seconds later when Orlando pouted.
“Why? I don’t need new clothes.” Wasn’t it enough that his sisters were fussing over clothing? He really didn’t care.
“Yes you do need new ones because you can’t face King Viggo and the Danish courtyard like that.” She gestured towards the stained clothes he was wearing.
“And we have to do something with your hair.”
“Nooo.” Orlando wailed. He wasn’t so sure if agreeing to accompany them had been such a good idea all of a sudden. He hated the ceremonious stuff and the endless hours it took until his mother was satisfied with the way he looked.
With a sigh, he let his mother drag him off to the tailor.

Eight days later Orlando looked one last time at the castle that was his home before he hugged his father, sisters, and Julia goodbye and climbed into the carriage, not knowing that this journey would change his life.
