Summary: Orlando is doubting himself, can Viggo make him believe in himself again?
'A Lot To Learn'
Orlando was sweating...profusely sweating, in fact.
He'd been in weapons training since early morning and, from the glimpse he'd had of outside the window, it was now nearing nightfall. Over and over again, he'd tried to perfect the skill of brandishing two knives at once, but for some reason, he just couldn't get it right.
Bob had told Orlando not to despair, that he would get it eventually, but the young man was beginning to doubt those words. Everyone else had gotten their stunt down and had left for the day. Not Orlando. He refused to stop until he got it right. He even waved off his lunch break to keep at it.
After the hundredth time he dropped his blades, Orlando sat down on the matted floor and tried to keep the tears at bay. Frustration eating at him and he wondered if he should just give up. He had been so focused on his task of learning that he'd failed to hear the footsteps approaching him from behind and was startled when two arms wrapped themselves around his waist.
"What's going on, elfboy?"
Orlando swiped at the traitorous tears rolling down his cheeks and leaned back against his lover, feeling a sudden calmness sweep over him.
"Nothing," he replied with a slight sniff.
"Ah...now, I know better," Viggo whispered as he squeezed his arms tighter around the slender frame of his lover. "Tell me what has you so upset."
The young man took a deep breath and figured he might as well confess. He knew that Viggo would get the truth out of him sooner or later.
"I suck at this! I can't seem to get the hang of making both hands move the knives the way they're supposed to. I feel like I'm letting everyone down." Orlando finished the sentence on a sob and turned around in the older man's arms and clutched at him, while sobbing into his shoulder.
"Don’t do this babe, you have nothing to worry about," Viggo reassured him, while rubbing his back and pulling him closer. "You're much too hard on yourself. We're all having to learn new things and sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming."
Orlando knew Viggo was right, but it worried him and he felt like he was lagging way behind everyone else.
"I know you think I'm naïve and you're probably right," Orlando pressed his fingers to the other man's lips to keep him from protesting. "I am, but I want to do better. I want to show everyone that I can do this. I won't let my inexperience or problems with my back keep me from doing my best. I don't want to disappoint anyone."
"You're not disappointing anyone," Viggo reassured him again. "What you need is a break." He could feel the young man shake his head so he placed a hand on each side of Orlando's head and raised it to where their eyes met. "You need a break. I won't take no for an answer."
Viggo stood up and pulled his lover to his feet.
"Let's get out of here and go for a walk, find you something to eat."
Orlando nodded and went to put the knives away. He knew Viggo was right, but still had some misgivings about leaving just then. Not wanting to prolong his frustrations or to keep Viggo waiting, Orlando said goodnight to Bob and some of the other stunties still in the training area and then headed back to where Viggo was waiting for him.
"Hey, Vig. Do you think you could help me with training? I.. I know that you've got your hands full with your own training schedule, but I was hoping that you might be willing to help me a little." Orlando blushed when he realized he was rambling.
"I'd be happy to. In fact, it'd be an honor, love," Viggo pulled the young man into his arms and kissed him. "You're doing much better than you think, but we're in this together and we'll constantly learn from one another. Don't be so hard on yourself, okay?"
Orlando smiled and leaned forward to kiss Viggo again.
"Thank you, old man," giggling when he heard Viggo grumble in his ear. "Let's go grab something to eat, filthy ranger. I'm famished!"
"Lead the way, prissy elf," Viggo nudged the boy in his arms towards the door.
"Maybe later on I'll teach you other kinds of stunts."
The end.
