Chapter 1
Orlando sat back in the hard chair and let out a sigh. He was going on 14 hours of work, and he was beginning to get tired. But that was all part of his job. He was trying to get the attending Physician position at Harbor View Hospital in Seattle.
He was competing with another young upstart, by the name of Brad Pitt. Brad was always sucking up to the head physician Dr. Jackson. Orlando rolled his eyes as he thought about his fellow co-worker. He was a good-looking guy with blonde hair and a very toned body. He was a jerk though. He was more interested in fast cars, and even faster women. He didn’t care about the patient’s at all; all he cared about was his check, women and cars. Orlando shook his head in disgust.
Nurse Otto called him suddenly out of his thoughts.
Orlando looked at her his eyes slightly glazed. “How long was I asleep?” he asked.
“Five minutes,” she said holding up five fingers.
Orlando nodded, “Right, I’ll be right there,” he said as he went over and got a cup of coffee from the standard hospital coffee machine. “I’ll have a Grande mocha with hazelnut and whip cream please,” he asked the machine as it poured out its black brew. He took a drink and winced at the sour taste. Oh well he thought, whatever it takes to keep him awake.
Orlando walked out of the staff room and spotted nurse Otto waving at one of the rooms. He went over quickly and asked what was wrong with the patient.
She showed him the x-rays. “No broken bones then,” he said as he gazed at the film. “Wrap his ankle and give him a pair of crutches and set him up with a follow-up appointment.”
She nodded her head as Orlando headed off into the next room. He pulled back the curtain, and looked at the chart. “Mrs. Astin, you’re back again?” he asked with a forced smile.
“Yes doctor, I keep getting these…rashes,” she said shyly.
Orlando forced another smile as he spoke nicely to her, “You need to stop eating shellfish them Mrs. Astin.”
“Do I need a shot?” she asked with a smile, as she pulled up her dress to reveal welts all over her large hips.
Orlando swallowed around the nausea that threatened to consume him.” Yes Mrs. Astin, I’ll be right back,” he said, quickly retreating to the medication room and finding the right medication. He murmured to himself as he prepared the shot and walked back out and to the small cubicle. It was very hot in the enclosed space and he squinted and looked at the large hip that met his eyes.
“I’m ready when you are doctor she said as she lifted her dress higher.
Orlando grimaced as he swabbed the swollen hips and jabbed at the hard flesh. “There you go Mrs. Astin, “ he said pulling down her dress quickly. “Now please, stop eating shellfish,” he asked nicely.
“Oh Dr. Bloom?” she asked before he managed to leave the room. “Are…are you married?”
Orlando fought the urge not to throw up right there and then. “Um, no Mrs. Astin,” he replied as he turned to walk away as quickly as he could.
“To bad.” He heard her call out as he hurried down the hallway.
Just then the ambulance brought in another patient that had been in a car accident. Both Orlando and Brad where standing there as Dr. Jackson looked over at them.
“How long have you been here Brad?” he asked.
“Eleven hours,” he said with a smile.
“Orlando?” he asked next.
Orlando looked off to the side, “A little longer,” he said softly.
“Okay Brad, he’s all yours.” he said.
Brad nodded his head and left with the patient, a smirk on his otherwise handsome face.
“Orlando,” Dr. Jackson’s voice called as he had turned to leave.
“Yes Dr. Jackson?’ he asked shifting nervously from one foot to the other.
“I was going to tell you tomorrow, but…you’re going to be the next attending physician.”
Orlando’s eyes lit up as he reached over and hugged the man.”Oh thank you, thank you Dr. Jackson, there is so much I want to do,” he said gleefully.
“Orlando,” he said with a sterner voice. “ Right now, I need you to go home and go to bed.”
“But,” Orlando began.
“You’ve been here over 16 hours. Its time for you to go home.”
Orlando looked at him strangely.
“I know all,” he said smiling.
“Yes Dr. Jackson.” He said. He turned around and headed back to the staff room to change. When he got there his cell phone rang.
“Hello?’ he answered.
“Hey, are you showing tonight or what?” his sister asked him.
“Oh, I’m sorry Samantha, I forgot,” he said as he pulled his work shoes off.
“I set this date up for you a week ago Orli, you had better not cancel out.” She said.
“I’m late already,” he said as he looked at the time.
“You just get your ass here,” she said as she slammed the oven door shut.
Orlando could here her yelling at her kids in the background. He smiled, Samantha was a good mother. He really didn’t want to go on this blind date tonight, even if it was at his sister’s place. An old friend of hers set this up with his sister. Orlando hated blind dates, he didn’t have time for them, and his work at the hospital took up most of his time. “I’m fine Sam, I really don’t need you setting dates up for me.”
“You need a life other than that hospital Orlando, I want to see you have a partner and be happy.”
“Hey, someone just asked me tonight if I was married,” he said. He didn’t tell her it had made him sick.
“I just want you to be with someone who is not sick and bleeding honey,” she said sincerely.
“I know Sam, I’ll be there as soon as I can okay?”
“You’d better, “ she said and hung up the line.
He hurried up and finished dressing trying to hurry so his sis wouldn’t yell at him again when he got there. He headed for the elevator and got stopped by another nurse. “Dr. Bloom, can you check this patient real quick, I think he’s got a bowel obstruction”
Orlando looked at his watch and at the elevator and made a quick decision. “Okay, I’ll be right there.” He was such a sucker for anyone ill.
Finally an hour later, he headed out to his car and ran into Brad getting into his BMW.
“Congratulations,” he said as he opened the car door. “On the attending.”
“Thanks, “Orlando said.
“I’ve got an offer in Phoenix,” he said looking like he didn’t care.
“That’s good Brad, I’m glad, “ he said as he got in and started the car and turned the wipers on, as it had started to rain.
Orlando drove up the road and grabbed his cell phone again. “Hello? Sammie? I got the attending!” he said excitedly his smile widening.
“Yes, yes,” he told me tonight,”
“Are you on your way?” she asked happy for her brother, but annoyed that he was late.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” he said as he turned the corner, squinting in the light and the rain.
“Hey, your dates late too,” she said as she opened the fridge. “Just get here so my dinner’s not ruined,” she groaned.
“Okay,” Orlando laughed as he hung up the phone. He tuned the radio up, it was playing “Let the good times roll,” The rain started to pour down harder on the small car. He squinted again as a truck came up over the hill and its lights hit him right in the eyes. He slammed on the brakes and saw nothing but white after that.

Date: 2006-08-22 10:18 am (UTC)Oh my goodness, great minds think alike. I just saw the movie 'Just Like Heaven' for the first time the other night and loved it, that's what this one is based on right? This is a great start, and I'll definitely read more as you post it. Will you be posting more of this as you finish 'A Life Known' or will you wait until after that one is finished?
~C~
