Chapter 26
Viggo’s frame slid slowly down the side of the glass window, as he watched as the plane moved beyond sight. He felt the hot tears flow down his face as realization flooded him with a sense of loss he thought could not get any worse. Orlando was gone, now out of reach, how had they gotten to this point? Why did he not realize that Orlando would actually do something as desperate as this? How crushed he must have been to feel he had to leave? To leave behind a promising career? His new formed friends? Him?
“Why?” he sobbed into Sean’s arms. “Why Sean? Why would he do something so drastic as this?”
“I don’t know Vig,” he answered as he held his friend in his arms. He had no doubt in his mind now the depth of feeling’s Viggo had for Orlando, not one single doubt. “I suppose it was to much for him to take.”
“It’s all my fault Sean…all my fault, I drove him to this, I love him, yet I drove him to feeling so bad, he felt the had to leave!”
“It’s no ones fault Vig,” he said as he took the man’s head in his hands. “Do you understand?” as he looked into the reddened eyes. “But you can do something about it. Do you want to? Do you Viggo?” he asked searching his friend’s face.
“Of course I do,” he responded urgently, surprised Sean had even asked.
“Then quit feeling sorry for yourself and find the soonest flight out of here to find him then.”
“Oh, and I’m sure Peter would go for that Sean,” he said sarcastically.
“I’ll talk to Pete, you worry about Orlando okay?” he replied standing and helping his friend to his feet.
“Where did he go Sean? Back to London?” he asked.
“He’s probably going home Viggo, he needs something familiar to him, so I would assume he booked to London and then will fly to Canterbury.”
“Your right, his mom and sister live there,” he said as he wiped his eyes. “But what if he doesn’t want to see me, what if he wants nothing more to do with me? What if he’s done with me?” he said sadly.
“If he was done with you, he would of stayed here, but that’s my opinion,” he replied.
Viggo nodded and walked back over to the counter. “When is the next flight for London leaving?” he asked the women.
She looked the two men over and looked at her computer, “I have one leaving in 4 hours..but its full.” She said. “The next one is tomorrow morning that has any available seating.”
“Tomorrow?” he breathed, his heart sinking. “That’s as soon as I can get one?”
“I’m sorry sir, but the flights are all booked up.”
Viggo let out a sigh, “I’ll take the soonest one miss,” he said finally.
“How many?” she asked as she typed into the computer.
“One.”
“You know Sean,” he said after minute, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here.”
“What do you mean?’ he asked frowning slightly.
“Maybe he just bought the ticket and didn’t get on the plane,” he said excitedly.
“I don’t know Viggo, I highly doubt it.”
Viggo looked back at the women at the counter. “Could you tell me if a young man approximately early 20’s dark brown hair and eyes, very slender, bordered the plane that just left.”
“Oh yes, I remember him, very nice looking young man, he was here very early when I came on. Looked like he has spent the night here.” She replied.
“Shit,” he muttered.
“Come on Viggo, lets go and we both can talk to Peter okay?’ he said as he put his arm around his friend.
“Yeah, I think I have some groveling to do,” he replied.
**************************************************************
Orlando stared out the window as the plane rose into the air. He felt his stomach shift with the plane as it rose higher and higher and the town of Wellington became smaller and smaller beneath him. He felt the sting of tears as he gazed out upon the beautiful landscape. “Oh Viggo,” he said softly as he breath hitched. “I will so miss you.” He brought his hand up and wiped at the hot tears that flowed down his face. What will I do without you? He thought. He had thought he had found his soul mate in Viggo. He had felt they had such a great connection. He laughed at the ironic thought, maybe to great a connection.
“Are you alright sir?” he heard the soft voice next to him. He turned his head and noticed Claire was sitting next to him with a tissue in her hand.
He smiled as he took the tissue and wiped his face. “Not really,” he stammered.
“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked with a smile.” I’m a very good listener.”
“Oh, I’m sure you are,” he said with a small smile. “It’s kind of personal though.”
“Oh,” she said as she understood. “Girlfriend problem’s?”
Orlando laughed shaking his head no. “Not quite.”
“Oh,” she replied looking more confused.
“But thanks Claire, I appreciate the tissue.” He added as he waved said tissue.
She stood and got a pillow out of the overhead compartment and motioned for him to lift his head, and placed it underneath it. She then got a blanket and tucked it around him. He smiled at her thoughtfulness.
“You get some sleep sweetie,” she said as she patted his head and left quietly.
Orlando snuggled down into the blanket and smiled. He closed his eyes and tried thinking of happier times with Viggo and it slowly lulled him to sleep along with the gentle hum of the plane as it left New Zealand behind him.
************************************************
Sean and Viggo arrived at the set a while later and eagerly sought of the director. He was a difficult man to find being that he was in such high demand, but they finally did.
They were still shooting a scene of Frodo and Sam together. Viggo watched silently from behind the camera. He shifted back and forth nervously.
Elijah tried saying his lines but became to distracted to speak them, staring over at Viggo.
“Alright, cut for a break,” Peter said finally.
“You two, follow me,” he said pointing to Viggo and Sean, as he trudged to his office. He sat down and placed his folded hands on the desk looking intently at them both.
“Viggo, what’s going on?” he asked straight out.
“Um…” he paused looking at Sean. “Orlando and I had a falling out of sorts.” He began.
“He stopped by my place last night,” Peter interrupted him. “Wanted to leave the movie!”
“I know…” Viggo replied. “I need to talk to you about that…”
“I told him, I would talk to you Viggo, see if I could get you two to get along without this whatever it is, getting in the way.”
“Um…it’s a little more complicated than that Pete,” he said softly.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked sitting up straighter in his chair and more alert.
“Orlando..he um.. he left today,” Sean answered for Viggo.
Peter’s brows creased as he looked at Sean and then to Viggo. “What do you mean….left?”
“He..um… left New Zealand,” Viggo whispered.
“He what!” he yelled out. “Why would he do something like that? I told him he couldn’t leave!” he yelled again running his hands through his messed up hair and making it look worse if that wa even possible.
“We just found out a while ago Peter,” Sean offered as he tried to calm the director.
“Oh this is so not good,” he said running his hands through his mess of curls again.
“Vig’s going to go after him though,” he added. “He’s got a flight out tomorrow morning.”
“Oh great, another main character leaving the country, just what we needed.” he said exasperated by the situation.
“I’ll bring him back Pete,” Viggo said finally.
“How? How are you going to do that? It’s you he’s running from?” he asked as he leaned over his desk glaring at the two men.
“He’s just confused Peter, by everything that has happened,” Viggo said softly. “It’s my fault and I need to correct it.”
“Humph!” he replied as he leaned back in his chair.
“Will you still let him return Peter?” Sean asked.” If Viggo can get him to return?”
Peter looked up as if Sean was crazy. “Of course I will. I’m not an idiot!”
“I…” Sean began.
“Look guys…I know that this has been rough on all of you concerned. Especially Viggo and Orlando. Can you have him back here next week Viggo?” he asked looking at him intently.
Viggo looked at Sean and Sean just shrugged his shoulders. “I… I..yes Peter, I will have him back here,” he said finally.
Peter breathed in deep. “Alright, now go,” he said and motioned with his hand for them to leave. “I’ve got a lot of rescheduling to do!”
Sean and Viggo eagerly got up and made their way outside. Bumping into an anxious Elijah, Dom and Billy.
“What the hel’s going on?” asked Elijah as he looked from one man to the next.
They both stood there one looking at the other neither one wanting to say.
“Well?” he asked impatiently.
“Yeah, what going on?” asked Dom.
Sean motioned with a nod of his head to move the young men over, and away from Peter’s office and out of earshot from everyone else.
“Orlando…has took it upon himself to leave,” he said quietly.
“What’s that mean?” asked Billy. “Leave what?”
“Oh.. the country, the movie, whatever one you want to pick,” Sean answered back.
“He what?” all three said at once.
“I knew it!” yelled Elijah. “I had a feeling something was going to happen. This is all your fault Viggo,” he growled glaring at the older man.
“Elijah!” admonished Sean. “It’s no ones fault. Its time to put the blame aside and concentrate on Orlando, he’s been through enough…and so has Viggo,” he added with a glare to any of the younger men that could meet his piercing green eyes.
That quieted the trio very quickly as they stood there with their heads bowed. “So what are we supposed to do then?” asked Billy, finally gathering courage to speak.
Sean took a moment before answering gazing over at Viggo, “Viggo’s, going to follow him to London, and then to his home and try and talk to him.”
“You really think that’s going to help?” asked Elijah who was not blaming, but still annoyed. “You think he’s going to want to talk to Viggo?”
“Yes I do, and he’s the only one to let him know how he really feels.”
“And how is that?” asked Elijah impatiently shooting dagger’s at Viggo.
Viggo looked at Elijah, he knew he deserved Orlando’s friend’s glares. “I love him,” he said with sincerity.
“And you just decided that when?” he asked crossing his arms in front of his chest.
Viggo knew he deserved that one too. “I have for a while now Elijah,” he said quietly.
“I wouldn’t have know it by your behavior the other night, or rather Orlando’s behavior,” he said pointedly.
“I know,” he said as he put his hand up in defense of himself. “I know I’m to blame for how this all turned out, but I’m trying to fix it now, really, I am.”
Sean shifted restlessly next to Viggo, growing irate at Elijah.
He crossed his arms and spoke quietly, “Viggo, I’m going to take you home and let you get some rest before your flight.” He looked at the three young men standing there looking quite intimidated still. “You three stay and work and do as Pete tells you.”
“But Sean!” Elijah whined.
“No buts Elijah, just do it,” he growled as he took Viggo’s arm and led him back to the car.
“Sean, I really appreciate all that you’re doing, “ he said as he slid in.
Sean started the engine and glanced at his friend.”I just hope it all works out Vig, really, that’s all I want.”
Viggo nodded his head in agreement. “I do too Sean, I pray to God that it does.”
********************************************************************
Orlando awoke slowly and blinked his eyes as objects became clearer to him. He cleared his throat. It was dry from sleeping with his mouth open. He coughed again.
“Here, drink this,” said Claire as she offered him some water.
“Thanks,” he said roughly and took a long drink. “Much better,” he smiled as soon as he was done.
“You’ve been asleep for quite some time,” she replied. “We’ll be in London pretty soon.”
“Already?” he asked looking puzzled.
“Yep! Like I said you’ve been asleep for a long time, slept through the layovers and everything. Good thing you didn’t have to change planes.” She laughed. “You must have been exhausted?”
Orlando rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. They were sore and dry from all the crying he had done and the lack of sleep over the last day or two.
“Yeah, I was,” he mumbled.
“You hungry?” she asked.
“No, but thanks anyway,” he tried smiling.
She frowned at his response. He didn’t look well, even after all the sleep he had gotten.
She sat down next to him. “Listen, I know I’m kind of a pushy stewardess and all, but I’m concerned, you don’t look well.”
Orlando felt that old familiar feeling again. God he hated it. That sting that comes just before you start to cry. “I…I’m sorry…Claire, I just had a rough spell with someone who was….was special to me.” He said sadly wiping quickly at the tear the leaked out of his eye uncontrolled.
“Hey,” she said softly and laid her hand on his. “It’s okay, I’m sure everything is going to be okay.” She squeezed his hand tightly.
Orlando nodded his head slightly in agreement. “I hope so,” he whispered.
“I’m sure it will,” she said with a kind smile. She stood and looked at him closely. “Let me know when you’re ready to eat something okay?”
“I will,” he replied. “I think I’ll just get a little more sleep,” he said with a yawn.
She laughed, “Next time you wake, will be in London,” she said as she walked down the isle.
Orlando nodded his head numbly. Then what would he do? He hadn’t really thought that far ahead, he just had to get out of New Zealand. He assumed then he would just go home to Canterbury. He was sure his mum would be shocked at seeing him. What would she say? Would she be disappointed in him? Would Sam? He knew his mum would still love him, that was not in question at all. He sighed as he closed his eyes again and let sleep take him away from all the worries.
