Chapter 22
Viggo felt the pounding of his heart beating loudly in his ears and head as he made his way down to the beach from his house. His mind was reeling with the facts that Orlando had told him. His mind still couldn’t comprehend that Orlando was the recipient of Christine’s heart. What were the odds of something like that even occurring? He stopped when he couldn’t run any longer gasping for breath and fell to his knees in the wet sand. He felt the sand beneath his fingertips and grasped handfuls of it in his hands, squeezing it tightly and letting it fall through his fingers. He couldn’t see were he was, as his eyes had blurred with tears as he ran. He blinked them rapidly and looked around him. In the distance he could see the small glow of lights from the houses. He closed his eyes and shut out the sight and groaned aloud.
“Why?” he cried out into the night air. “Why did it have to be her? Why did it have to be him?” He looked to the sky and saw the twinkling of stars above him. “Why?” he asked again silently. “Have I not born enough pain? What have I done to deserve more pain and anguish?” he bowed his head and closed his eyes. His thoughts went back to the image of Orlando before him, telling him he was the recipient. He grimaced as he felt pain soar through his chest and he reached up and clenched at his heart. “Orlando,” he whispered. "Oh God Orlando, why you?” he didn’t know what to do now. How could he accept Orlando as his lover with his wife’s heart beating inside of him? “How?” he yelled out. “How?” he cried as he crawled back off the wet sand and lay back in the dryer sand. He covered his face with his arms and sobbed quietly as the answers would not come to him.
Orlando stood motionless for several minutes as he watched Viggo leave. He watched as the anguish and pain had appeared on his face. He knew he shouldn’t follow him. He wanted to so bad. But it would only make things worse. He laughed at how ironic that sounded. How could things possibly get worse then they already were? He laughed through his tears not knowing what or why he was. He looked out into the night sky and could barely see Viggo’s form in the darkness as he went further and further away from the light of the house and from him.
What was he to do now? Should he stay or should he go? Should he call Elijah or call Sean? Should he just get on a plane and leave New Zealand? He sat down on the chair that he had been sitting in before and stared out into the night. He couldn’t make up his mind what to do; so he just sat there and waited. For what he did not know.
Time seemed to pass slowly as he sat there staring out into the night and he was startled out of his thoughts at the ringing of the phone. He looked around him wondering were the ringing was coming from? He slowly got up and walked back into the house and followed the noise to the phone lying on the counter. He debated whether he should pick it up or not. He looked back out into the night and thought it was probably Sean wondering how things went. He should have Sean check on Viggo, to make sure he was okay. God knows Viggo didn’t want Orlando doing it.
He picked up the phone with a shaky hand. “He..llo?’ he answered.
“Orlando? Is that you mate?”
“Um…yeah, it is Sean.”
Where’s Viggo lad?’ he asked softly.
“He left…he ran to the beach.”
“You told him them?” he asked worriedly.
Orlando sat down at the table placing his head in his hand as he started to cry again.
“Orlando? Orli. Are you still there lad?”
“Y..es,” he cried into the phone.
Shit.” He murmured. “I’ll be right over mate, you stay there alright?”
Orlando gasped quietly as he tried to talk. “Yes,” he said at last.
Sean hung up the phone and quickly dialed Elijah.
“Hello,” came the sleepy voice.
“I’ll be there in 5 minutes, be ready!” Sean said and hung up the phone.
Elijah sat up and looked at the phone and realized that something bad had happened. He quickly threw his clothes on and was outside waiting for Sean when he pulled up.
As he got in and slammed the door, Sean peeled out of the drive. “What happened Sean?” he asked worriedly looking at his friends profile in the dark.
“I called Vig's house to see how things went. Orlando answered, and he sounds really shook up. He said Viggo had ran down to the beach and he hadn’t seen him since.”
“Oh shit!” he gasped.
“Oh shit is right!” he replied. “I think maybe I underestimated how Vig would take this,” he said as he tightened his grip on the wheel.
“You couldn’t of known Sean,” he said shaking his head. “How can anyone predict that this would happen?”
“I should of known, you knew, you said so yourself,” he replied.
“It was just a feeling Sean, it didn’t mean it would.”
“Fuck! This is so messed up I can’t even begin to comprehend the situation that these two are going through.”
Elijah sat quietly next to him. He understood only to well, how Sean felt. He only hoped he would be able to help once he got there.
***********************************************
Orlando sat at the kitchen table after he had turned off the phone. He stared at the numbers as his thoughts drifted back to the conversation out on the deck with Viggo. He winced as he remembered the look in his eyes when it finally dawned on him what Orlando was saying was real, and he was truly the recipient of her heart. The look of pain and remembrance were shown clearly on his face. It nearly broke Orlando’s heart to see it and to know that he was the cause for the pain. Then and now.
He didn’t know what he would do now. How could he face working with Viggo everyday. How could Viggo even work with him? He didn’t think that anyone could under these circumstances. Maybe it would be best if he just left. He was sure Peter could easily replace him. There were a lot of blond elves running around the set.
He was brought out of his thoughts by the soft knock on the door. He quickly got up to answer it hoping it was Sean. He was not disappointed when he opened the door and found not only Sean, but Elijah there as a well. He reached out and was immediately embrassed in a hug by Elijah.
“Where’s Viggo Orlando?’” Sean asked as he stepped through the door.
“He hasn’t come back yet, I’m not sure were he is.”
“I’m going to go out and look for him; Elijah you stay here with Orlando alright.”
Elijah nodded his head and Sean quickly went out the backdoor flashlight in hand.
Sean stared out into the darkness squinting his eyes as he tried to see. He went slowly down the stairs and followed the path that was there already. He could see by the flashlight the footprints that looked like they had been made by someone running. He shook his head. “God Viggo, where are you?” he asked silently. He moved the light around the area as he walked toward the shoreline. The sound of the waves increasing as he got closer. Then he heard a different sound. He stopped and listened intently to where it was coming from. He pointed the beam of light to the left and saw the dark form huddled in the sand. “Viggo,” he sighed softly and ran over to the figure.
Viggo stiffened as he heard someone coming. He didn’t want to talk to Orlando. That was the last thing he wanted to do. He tried to quit his sobs…but the light shown on him, and he felt a figure leaning over him.
“Viggo?” said the soft voice.
Viggo looked up at the sound of Sean’s voice. “Sean?” He whispered
“Yeah mate, it’s me.” He said as he rubbed Viggo’s back.
Viggo shook his head. “”No,” he said quietly.
“No what Vig?” he asked as he knelt in the sand next to his friend.
“I want to be alone, please.” He begged.
“Viggo, it’s late, and it’s dark out here, come back inside where you can relax and we can talk alright?”
“Don’t want to talk..to you..or anyone, you all knew, why didn’t you tell me. Why?” he said looking up into Sean’s eyes.
Sean felt his heart ache at the soulful look in Viggo’s eyes.
“Vig, it wasn’t up to us to tell, it was Orlando’s story, not ours. “
“Sean…he has Christine’s heart, how can I look at him without thinking of her now?”
Sean reached out and took Viggos hand in his. “Viggo..I’m not an expert on these things, far from it. But Orlando is still Orlando. He is not Christine.”
“Remember when I told you about that night Sean?” he asked.
“Of course Vig.”
“It was because of Orlando that I finally consented to disconnect life support. Because of him.”
“But you didn’t know it was him Vig.”
“I felt so guilty…when the doctor told me about him,” he said as he looked up into the night sky. “That’s all I thought about after her death, when I was in Idaho for those first months. Those words I kept repeating then over in my mind. “There is a very ill young man upstairs.” Those words Sean.”
Sean closed his eyes as he tried to think of what to say to comfort his friend. How hard this must be on him. “Vig, you can’t think like that or blame Orlando mate, it wasn’t his fault. He didn’t ask for Christine's heart. Viggo listen to me.” He said as he urged his friend to look at him. “They would have advised you to disconnect anyway, whether Orlando was there or not, someone else would have gotten her heart, maybe someone who wouldn’t of appreciated it the way Orlando has. He is a wonderful young man Viggo, and he was deserving of it if anyone was.”
Viggo nodded his head in understanding. “I know your right Sean, but still I can’t, I just can’t deal with this right now, I can’t face Orlando.”
“Give it some time Viggo, it’s a lot to get use to.”
“I don’t know if I ever can Sean, I just don’t know if I can,”he said shaking his head sadly.
Orlando and Elijah watched as Sean left, leaving them alone in the kitchen.
“Sean will talk to him Orli, he’ll make him understand.”
“I don’t think so this time Lij, this time it’s different. This is way different then anything that he has dealt with or that I have dealt with, I’m still trembling,” he said as he held out his hands for Elijah to see.
Elijah took the offered hand, “No one blames you Orli, how could anyone blame you for this?”
Orlando looked in Elijah’s eyes, “Viggo blames me, and he thinks I killed his wife.”
“Did he say that Orli?” Elijah asked surprised.
Orlando sat there quietly for a moment. “No, not in words, but I saw the look on his face.”
“Then don’t make up words that might have been said,” He replied to him.
“He could barely even look at me Lij, when I told him. He wouldn’t even let me touch him.” He pulled his hand away form Elijah’s. “I think he never wants to see me again. Ever. Maybe I should just leave New Zealand, he would be better off without me.”
Orli, you can’t do that, we have already discussed that, you can’t just leave in the middle of a shoot, your career would be on the line.”
“I don’t care about it Lij, not anymore.”
“You don’t mean that Orli, you’re just upset and you have reason to be upset.”
“I need to talk to Peter, tell him I’m leaving,” he said as if Elijah hadn’t even spoken.
“Orli! This is foolish, you just can’t,” he insisted
“It’s not foolish Lij and I can!” he stated firmly as he stood.
“Come on Orli,” Elijah stood up as well. “You're over reacting to this, I’m sure Viggo will be okay once he gets use to the idea.”
Orlando shook his head, “That’s where your wrong mate. Just like you and Bean were wrong about tonight, I’m going to talk to Peter,” he said as he walked to the door.
“Orli! Come on, don’t do this,” he said as he grabbed his arm trying to get him to stay.
Orlando pulled his arm from Elijah’s grasp, “This is my decision Lij, not yours,” he answered sternly and opened the door and walked out, leaving a stunned Elijah standing with his mouth hanging open.
“Fuck it,” he moaned as he held his head in his hands, “Sean’s going to fucking kill me.”
