Chapter 5/? A New Beginning
Beta: None
Disclaimer: I do not know the for sure preference of these men but this is a work of fiction and should be read as that!
Warnings: Angst
Orlando awoke slowly to the sound of someone calling his name softly. He tried to open his eyes but they felt glued shut. He tried again and slowly opened them to a soft light above his head. He blinked again. He could hear the steady beat of a heart monitor. He tried to talk but his mouth felt dry and full of cotton. His tongue tried to moisten his dry lips but that didn’t help either.
“Mum?” he finally got out his voice hoarse. “Mum?”
“Here sweetie, take a sip of water,”
Orlando turned his head to the side where the soft voice came from. He saw his mom looking at him with a soft smile on her face. Holding the glass out to him with a straw.
“Take a slow slip sweetie,” she advised.
He opened his mouth and took a small sip. He laid his head back on the pillow then slowly raised his hand to his chest and felt the large bandage there. He closed his eyes. “I thought it was all a dream,” he whispered his eyes tearing up.
“No, no dream honey,” she responded as she sat at his side taking his hand in hers.
He nodded his head.
“How do you feel Orli?” she asked brushing back the curls off his forehead, concern laced her voice.
“Tired, groggy,” he answered quietly. “Everything…go okay?”
“Yes, it was smooth sailing as doctor Crowe put it, he said you would be in the hospital for a while. But go back to sleep sweetie, we can talk later okay?”
“Okay,” he mouthed quietly and closed his eyes once more and drifted off into a drug
induced sleep.

Orlando’s recovery was going extremely well. He had gone through the surgery with hardly any problems. And his rehabilitation was going even better. He felt really good. He could breath so much easier now and he had so much more energy. He felt like he was 16 again. The last few years had drained him so much he could barely remember how it felt to be, “normal.”
He waited not so patiently in the reception area for his appointment with Dr. Crowe so he could get permission to go back to England and finish drama school. He chewed on his nails nervously and his leg bounced up and down continually.
The door to the patient rooms opened and his name was called.” Orlando,” the nurse called with a smile.
Orlando stood quickly and smiled back. “Hey gorgeous!” He bounded over to Dr. Crowe’s nurse.
The nurse blushed. She was older and married, but he made her feel young again and pretty. She knew he was nothing but a big flirt, but it was nice anyway, if she was only younger she thought with a smile and a sigh.
“You are going to drive all those girls crazy you know that?’ she teased him.
This time it was Orlando who blushed. “Won’t have time, going to finish drama school. Just have a year left, I’ve got to get serious, no time for that..stuff.”
“Well maybe I should get your autograph now then, before you get all famous and stuck on yourself.” she laughed as she helped him into the room. “Here now take your shirt off,” she said as she handed him a gown to put on.
“Really nurse, aren’t you married?’ he teased her as he pulled his shirt off over his head.
“Your terrible,” she laughed turning around and blushing again pretending to write on his chart.
“I know, I just feel so good. I feel like a new person inside.” He answered with a smile.
She smiled. “You’re a sweetie Orli, I’m going to miss you,” she said as she walked over gave him a hug.
“Well, just watch for me at the movies in the next few years,” he said. “Just wait and my name will be on billboards everywhere!”
“Hey, what’s going on in here?” asked Dr. Crowe as he came in. “Did I interrupt something?” he smiled.
“Just talking about getting ready for school and starting on my film career.” He smiled at the doctor and reached out his hand to shake.
“Your looking good Orlando I must say,” he grinned at the young man looking him over.
“I feel good too.” He said proudly, sitting up straighter.
“Lets take a listen shall we?” he asked.
Orlando prepared himself for the harsh reality of the cold instrument that was placed against his chest as the doctor listened.
“Hey! It wasn’t cold!” he said loudly.
The doctor smiled, “I warmed it up just for you Mr. Bloom, I know how you hate the cold stethoscope.” He listened for a few minutes to his heart and then listened to his lungs, asking him to breathe deeply.
“Sounds great Orlando.” He said beaming as he put the instrument around his neck,
“So am I free to fly the friendly skies?’ he asked eagerly his eyes lighting up.
“I would say so, but you still need to take it easy for a while yet,” he responded with a stern look.
“I know, I’m just going to start back at school right now and get finished.” He said with a grin. “I will take it easy, I promise. I don’t want to do anything that would hurt myself.”
“Good, good, you’ve done really well Orlando, you have made great improvement since your last visit,”
Orlando sat there a minute and chewed on his lip. He wanted to ask but didn’t know how too.
“What is it Orli?” he asked as he watched the young man squirm on the exam table. “Is something wrong?”
“I just…. I wanted to thank the family who donated my heart. Does that sound wrong?” he asked shyly.
“No, that doesn’t sound wrong, but usually the donors family and recipient don’t meet.”
Orlando nodded. He knew this but he wanted to find out about the person he owed his life to.
He wanted to know more about them.” Is there anything I can know?” he asked.
“Not really Orlando that confidential. If you want, you can write to the donor center and then they can forward it to the donor’s family. They keep track of that kind of thing.”
“Oh, okay I suppose I can do that, it’s better than nothing,” he said glad he could do something, anything.
“Well you’re a free man,” the doctor said smiling, “ Your mom and sister here to take you home?”
“Yeah, they’ve not left me alone at all,” he said with a roll of his eyes. “They are out in the car waiting. I told them not to come in. It cramps my style”
The doctor laughed with him. “Your lucky they care so much for you Orlando.”
“I know, I know,” he replied and laughed.” Okay, well I’m out of here and on my way back to England.”he grabbed his shirt as he was talking.
The Doctor reached out once more and shook his hand, “Good luck to you Orli,” he said with a warm smile, “ I hope we meet again someday and not for medical reasons,” he added. “You have made appointments with your Doctor back home right?”
“Yeah, I did, well mum did, and she’s taken care of everything,”
Orlando shrugged the shirt on and buttoned up the front. His fingers grazed over the long scar on his chest and he stilled them for a moment and wrinkled his brow. “Will it ever fade?’ he asked looking hopefully at the doctor.
“It will always be there Orlando, it just gets lighter with time.”
He nodded his head, “I just… I hate telling people about it, they get real weird around me. They treat me like I could break at any minute.”
“It will take time, but they will love the real you once they know you, and then they will return to normal and then you will be the weird one.” He replied laughing.
Orlando snorted loudly, “You got that right doc. See ya around,” With that he walked out of his office with a new since of freedom he hadn’t felt in a very long time.
