Hope Chapter 4
Samantha and her mom waited a while before deciding to return to Orlando’s room. It wasn’t something either one of them was looking forward to. They had talked quietly and cried quietly after the doctor had left them with the grim prognosis with hardly any hope left.
“I suppose we better go check on Orli, mum,” Samantha said standing up and wiping her tear stained checks with her hankie. She held her hand out to her mom so she could clasp it.
Sonia took it, her hand shaking as she did; and hesitantly stood. Not wanting to face her dying son, not knowing what to say to ease him through this time of pain and hopelessness.
“What do we tell him Sammy?” she asked with tears shimmering in her eyes. “How do we tell him?” she asked with a slight tremble to her words.
“I don’t know mum,” she replied. “ The right time will come and then… well,” she hesitated. “I don’t know what we’ll say.” She trailed off trying to fight her own tears from starting all over again, sometimes she started crying and she could never get the tears under control no matter how hard she tried. It would only take one word, one thought, to cross her mind and her eyes would swell up with tears once again. Her mom always told her when she cried her eyes where so much more vibrant in color.
Sonia knew this was hard on her daughter too. She had been so strong for both of them and she wanted to tell her daughter so.
“You’ve been my rock Sammy,” she said as she squeezed her daughter’s hand between hers.
“I wish I could have done more mum,” she replied shaking her head. “I feel so useless, so very, very useless right now.”
“I know, I feel the same, he’s in God’s hands now honey, I guess he always was, from the very start.”
“Should I call Colin?” she asked quietly.
“I’ll call him sweetie, you run down and stay with Orlando, okay? I’ll be down shortly hmm?” She raised her hand to Samantha’s temple and brushed a stray hair from her eyes.
“Sure mum,” she answered and gave her a quick kiss on the check before she walked to open the door to the family room.
As she opened the door, she nearly ran into the charge nurse. Who hand her hand on the doorknob from the other side.
“Mrs. Bloom, Samantha, I am so glad I found you!” she said quickly out of breath, her hand to her chest as if she had had a terrible fright.
Both woman felt their hearts stop in place, fearing the worse had happened to Orlando while they had been in there crying.
“No! No!” The nurse said quickly noticing the look of panic in each woman’s face. “Orlando’s okay, actually he is going to be better than okay,” she smiled.
Both woman still stood there blinking numbly. Wondering what she was talking about.
“Has Dr. Crowe been to see you yet?” She asked as she noticed the confused looks on their faces.
“Not for an hour or so,” Samantha answered. “He had to go to the emergency room, but he said he would be back shortly.”
“Oh,” she paused not sure what she should say. But she was relieved as she saw the doctor rounding the corner. “I’ll let the doctor explain!” she said and hurried off down the hall.
“Doctor, what’s going on? Is Orlando okay?” Sonia asked worriedly, wringing her hands together and scrunching up the hankie she held so tightly in her small hands.
He smiled, “Yes, yes he’s fine, there is no change at the present, but I have some very encouraging news!”
Both mother and daughter held there collective breathes, hoping to hear the words they so desperately needed to hear. The only thing they wanted to hear.
Dr. Crowe smiled at them, “We have a donor for Orlando.”
Both women stood shocked for a moment until the news finally soaked in and they both had tears of relief and happiness start to flow as they hugged each other tightly.
“Does my Orlando know?” Sonia asked eagerly as she pulled out from her daughter’s arms.
“I was just going to tell him, would you ladies like to join me?” he asked with a smile.
They both nodded and fell into step with the doctor as he hurried down the hallway. “They will be in a bit to get him ready so we need to tell him quickly, he won’t have much time to adjust to the news…so just be there for him and assure him that he’s going to be okay.”
Both women nodded as they turned to enter Orlando’s room.
Orlando awoke to the sound of several footsteps entering his room. He cracked open an eye and looked around. There stood his mum and sister, and Dr. Crowe with smiles on their tear stained faces. “Someone win the lottery?” he asked trying to crack a joke, his voice raspy.
“You could say that Orlando,” Dr. Crowe said sitting down on the edge of the bed next to the slender young man.
“What’s going on?” he asked nervously. He looked at each face in the room his breathing becoming faster.
Sonia leaned over and took his hand squeezing it gently as if it would break. “Tell him Dr Crowe.” She said happily. Go ahead, tell him.”
“Tell me what?” he asked confused looking from his mum to his sister to the doctor.
“We found a heart for you Orlando,” he said and watched for the young man’s reaction.
Orlando could only lie there and blink stupidly for a moment before he understood what was happening. “A match?” he asked hesitantly.
“Perfect match,” answered Dr Crowe. “They’re going to be in to get you ready for surgery in a bit, so talk to your mum and Sam till then okay? The nurses will be in for you to sign some papers give you some medication to make you sleepy and then they’ll take you down to the O.R. I’ll be assiting, if that’s okay?”
Orlando barely nodded his head as the doctor got up to go. “You’ll do okay Orlando,” he said as he took the young man’s hand in his and gave a firm squeeze. “You’ll be back and up on your feet in no time,” he said as he hurried out the door.
“Mum?” he asked as Sonia sat down and gave him a hug. “It’s really real? It’s a match?”
“Yes Orli, truly it is, it couldn’t have come at a better time,” she replied scooting closer next to him on the bed.
“But mum?” he asked again.
“Yes Orli, what is it sweetie?” She asked taking his hand and rubbing it soothingly.
“To have a donor, it means…someone had to die right?” he asked worriedly, chewing on his bottom lip making it turn whitish in color.
Sonia paused for a moment not even having thought of that yet. In all of her excitement, she hadn’t even thought of that. She looked over to Sam who was standing at the foot of the bed. “I…I suppose so Orlando.” She replied sadly.
He had such a sad look on his face as she answered him. “Orli, sometimes these things happen. Someone has to die for there to be donors, but this person…whomever he or she is…is giving you the gift of life.”
“I know mum, but it makes me sad to think that. I don’t want anyone to die so I might live.”
Sonia looked to Samantha for help.
Samantha came over and sat on the opposite side of the hospital bed and took Orlando’s hand in hers and squeezed it softly, “Orlikins when you get your new heart, you do this person proud, and be the best you there is, let them know that the gift they gave you was well used.”
Orlando nodded his head and the tears finally began to fall. “I’m not going to die mum,” he said looking to his mom as the tears flowed freely now. “I’m not going to die!”
Sonia hugged him fiercely crying too. “I know love, I know.”
