Memories

Sean walked into the hospital room and sighed. Viggo was asleep curled in the hard, uncomfortable chair that he had called home for the past two weeks. He refused to leave Orlando’s side no matter who begged or even threatened. The doctors, at first, went as far as to call security to escort him out because they were worried about his health but they called the guards off when it became physical. He kept muttering that he had to suffer the way he had made Orli suffer and Ian seemed to be the only one who understood him.

Peter was nearly out of his mind with worry. He was missing an elf and his king refused to show up as well. The rest of the cast was missing take after take, not getting their lines or missing marks. There were even tempers flaring, all out of concern for Orli. Elijah had told Peter at one point he thought he was a heartless bastard for shooting with Orli as bad as he was. He called a meeting and tried to explain to everyone that he had to keep the film going because the budget was about to eat them up and that he intended to keep Orli as Legolas but they had to work together and shoot around him or they would all be out of a job, including himself. He told them that Orlando had been too excited about this movie and his role in it to let anything happen to it while he was away. Ian, Hugo and Sean Bean tried to help Peter because they understood the director’s plight. They also knew deep inside Peter was just as crushed as everyone else was. Hell, Peter and Fran had hand picked Orli for the role fresh out of drama school and had taken him under their wing. All the younger cast were treated like their children and it shattered Peter to know that he had allowed someone to work on his set that was sick enough to do something so horrid much less to someone like Orli.

The hobbits made regular visits before work, during lunch and after work, spending time with Vig as late as they could. They talked to Orli and told him everything was going to be ok, they even cried over him. Billy had broken down the worst. He held Orli’s hand and sobbed telling him that he was sorry for not knowing, for not protecting him from the ‘bastard,’ as Dan had now been dubbed. Billy sat on the side of his bed and begged Orli to wake up and forgive him, to tell him it was ok, that he was going to be fine. It took Hugo and Sean to pull him off the bed and everyone in the room tried to console him but it didn’t help. That was the first time, after they initially saw Orlando, that Viggo had spoken. Viggo stood, walked to Billy and pulled him into a hug. He told him that it wasn’t his fault, that he had to be strong because Orli was going to wake up and when he did he was going to need all of them at 100%. Viggo’s words seemed to soothe him and he finally allowed the hobbits to take him home.

A few days later seemed to be Elijah’s turn only he surprised everyone; he didn’t cry. He got angry. Viggo was asleep when he came in on lunch break, the one time he came alone, and he sat in a chair next to Orli’s bed opposite Viggo. He told Orli to wake up; he shook him hard and told him to wake up again. When Orli didn’t respond the damn broke and Elijah lost it. He started screaming at Orli at the top of his lungs telling him that if he didn’t wake up he was going to kick his ass. Viggo of course woke up during the screaming and tried to calm him down but to no avail. Sean Bean had happened in to bring Viggo some real food and try and get him to eat when he heard the screaming and ran like a mad man down the hall. He got to the room in time to see Elijah haul off and smack Orli hard enough to snap his head around. Needless to say the food ended up in a heap on the floor because Viggo launched at Elijah and Sean had to throw himself into the fray to stop Viggo from killing him even though he wanted to do it himself at that point. Once he got Viggo pinned to the wall and Elijah had cowered in the corner sobbing he shook his head. He’d finally calmed Viggo down enough to sit in a chair and tend to Orli then when nurses and doctors came in and threatened to throw them all out. Thank God Dr. Wesley happened to be there and understood how volatile things were with everyone and smoothed things over. He left after giving his own warning that if anything like that happened again he would personally see to having guards out side Orlando’s room to assure no one, and he looked pointedly to Viggo then back to them, would be allowed back in. It took a few days before Viggo calmed down enough for Elijah to come back with out an escort to protect him.

Dom and Sean Astin turned into mother figures making sure everyone had food, blankets and pillows. They saw to taking care of Orli’s business matters while he wasn’t able. The press had found out about Orli getting hurt but thank God not about the rape. The PR people for New Line and Orli’s agent thought it would be a good idea to apprise people of his condition so that they hopefully wouldn’t dig for answers and find out about it before the lawyers could put a lid on it. The story was that five people had jumped Orli at a bar, which was true. They just left out a major detail. They even got Mike, the security guard that night, to say he was there and that they were the ones who broke up the fight. So it was Sean Astin who had taken to giving the press updates on Orli’s condition. Sean’s wife Christine had even started fixing meals for the cast and allowing them to converge in their house, knowing they all needed each other’s support right now.

Hugo, Ian and John had been like the preverbial tower guards, never leaving anyone alone, not allowing them to go anywhere without a ‘buddy’ that they knew and knew well. It was like living with the CIA, but no one complained because it made them feel safe. No one could prove it, because once they were home they were pretty much locked in, but it was said that the three of them would go to the hospital and spend the night taking care of Viggo and Orli until time to return to the set the next day. They all looked tired enough for it to be true.

Orli was physically getting better, his wounds were healing and his brain had stopped swelling but he had slipped into a coma, and no matter what they tried he just wouldn’t wake up. The doctors feared the worst, thinking that the swelling had caused irreparable brain damage. Viggo refused to believe that but everyone else was afraid it might be true.

Sean sat on the edge of Orli’s bed and brushed back an errant piece of hair. Orlando looked broken, like a glass sculpture that had been carelessly dropped and shattered. He was so young and innocent, no matter what he wanted you to think, he truly was. Sean had gotten to see the real Orli during their time in New Zealand and was honestly shocked at what he’d learned compared to the childish, immature, prank playing kid he had met at the beginning of the movie.

~Flash Back~

Sean was leaving the studio one day and noticed Orli was having car trouble and went to see if he could help. “Need a hand mate?”

Orli’s head snapped up banging unforgivingly on the popped hood causing Sean to laugh. “Jeez, you scared the hell out of me!”

“Sorry,” he said through laughter.

Orli joined him, “No, you’re not.” He looked at his watch then back at his car, “I hate to ask this, Sean, but this piece of shit is not going to be fixed anytime soon so could you give me a ride somewhere?”

“Sure,” he smiled and led the way to his SUV. Once they were both in he turned to a very anxious looking Orli, “Where to?”

“The children’s hospital please.”

Sean didn’t ask the thousand questions that popped into his head he just started the car and drove. After a couple of minuets of watching Orli check his watch and frown he asked, “Who is at the children’s hospital?”

“Emily.”

“Family?”

“Huh? No, she’s a five-year-old little girl who has leukemia and is going into isolation today to prepare for a bone marrow transplant. I promised her I could spend some time with her before isolation and with the shoot running late and my car I’m not going to have but an hour or so before they stop allowing people in. I can’t break my promise.”

Sean was stunned and the rest of the drive was spent in silence. When they pulled into the hospital parking lot Orli jumped out,” Thanks man, I’ll take a cab back!” He shut the door and ran, like the fires of Mordor were after him, into the hospital. Sean shook his head and got out of the car. It wasn’t hard to find Emily once he told the nurses he was a friend of Orli’s, in fact one of them escorted him to the floor. Turns out she was a huge fan of Sean’s and was totally swooning over the actor. Emily’s room had huge glass windows. The nurse told him it was so when she was in isolation she could see her family and they could see her. The nurse was then called away and Sean watched Orli and Emily. He looked on as the boy made her laugh and giggle. He watched as the little girl talked to Orli about her operation and how afraid she was. Sean was shocked at how grown up she sounded but he assumed any one who was robbed of a childhood by such a horrible disease would be more ‘grown’ then most adults. His heart broke when the little girl began to cry and Orli scooped her up, his gentle words and touches soothing her fears. Tears began to stream down his own face and he silently cursed the fact that the door was partially open, allowing him to hear their conversation.

“He’s an angel.”

“Huh?” Sean nearly jumped out of his skin at the soft voice. He turned to find a very tired looking woman who looked to be no older then her early thirties.

“Emily says Orli is her angel. You wanna know something funny? I think he really is. She lights up when he calls or sends her things and when he’s here it’s like she’s a normal little girl again. We owe him so much for what he’s done,” she finished through her tears. Wiping them away with her left hand she held her right out to him, “I’m Linda, Emily’s mother.”

He took her trembling hand, “I’m Sean, it’s nice to meet you.”

“So you work with Orli?”

“Yes,” he smiled unsure of what to say to this woman who was already going through so much.

“He told us he didn’t have any family here only the people he worked with who had become like his family,” she smiled. “He comes in sometimes, I guess still somewhat in character, and Emily loves it. The first time she was laughing at the way he was talking and he just couldn’t figure it out. He had no clue he still sounded like someone from a different time and when it dawned on him what was happening he stared calling Emily his little hobbit. She laughed that night more then she has laughed all her life. Now when she’s scared she tells her dad and I that she wants her elf. No matter what time of night he never fails to show up. On her worst nights he’ll tell her stories and tell her that she’s his hobbit and it’s his job as an elf prince to protect all the special hobbits and that she was the most special of them all.” She laughed, still looking through the window at her daughter and continuing to babble, as a nervous person tends to do. “She hates needles and the day after Orli told her that they came by to give her a shot, she told them they couldn’t or she would have her prince attack them and when they gave her the shot anyway she called him and can you believe he came up here and yelled at the nurses. We thought he was going to get thrown out when he told the head nurse that if her heartless staff learned how to do their jobs then he wouldn’t have to be up here yelling. My husband went over to try and calm him down. Just when he thought he’d talked him into walking away he turned back and stood face to face with her, his tone changed to the ‘prince’s’ and he calmly told her that ‘from this day forth Emily will be given all medication that is not in pill form through her IV. There will be no arguments, no disagreeing it is simply how it will be.’ Then he turned to my husband and sort of bowed and went back to Emily.”

Sean laughed, “Did it work?”

“Yeah,” she smiled at him. “They never gave her a needle again as long as she had an IV shunt.”

“Um, can I ask you a question?”

“Of course.”

“How did you meet Orli?”

“He volunteers here when he has time, although sadly Emily has taken up most of his free time now, what little he has with the movies and all. When we met him he was the one who took the kids for walks around the hospital or even outside for those who could go. He was infamous for sneaking things in to them.” She laughed, “There was one little boy who wanted nothing more then his baseball. Orli made him promise that he wouldn’t throw it inside or anything then brought it to him. What he didn’t know was the staff had taken a baseball away from the same boy for doing just that and sure enough the day Orli brought him a ball he threw it through the window.” They both laughed. “The head staff was ready to throw him out forever but the kids all gathered around him and refused to let him go. In the end the chief of staff said that anyone who could draw that much loyalty from his patients couldn’t be all bad so he could stay.”

They never noticed that Orli had laid the now sleeping child down but turned when he walked out the door. He was pale and looked so sad as the tears shown in his eyes. He fought with all he had to hold them back as he hugged Linda, “She’s asleep now. I’ve gotta go for a while,” he choked out before taking off in a dead run through the hospital corridors.

Sean turned to Linda, “I’ll go, you stay with your daughter,” and he took off after Orli. With a few helpful nurses pointing the way he found him in an empty waiting room setting on the floor with his knees pulled to his chest sobbing. Sean knelt down next to him and put his hand on his arm, “It’s ok, Orli.”

“No it’s not,” was the muffled reply. He raised his head and looked at Sean, tears staining his face and making him look so young and venerable. “She’s so young, Sean! So innocent and sweet, it should never have happened to her or any of these kids! It should happen to people like me who act stupid and carefree all the time or to people who do deserve some sort of horrid illness like child molesters or rapists! Not to her!”

“Life doesn’t see things that way, Orli. Bad things happen to good people and even though it’s not fair it’s the way life is. We just have to help those people through what ever life hands them no matter how bad it is.” He wiped Orli’s face with the back of his hand, “From what little time I spent with her mother I learned how much you have touched that little girl. She thinks you’re her angel.”

Orli laughed bitterly, “One who can’t save her.”

“Maybe not but you certainly made her time here as happy as it could possibly be. You’ve made her laugh and smile, you’ve held her when she cried and comforted her when she was scared. It seems to me that you may truly have been her angel.”

Orli looked up at Sean and read the honesty and sincerity on his face and knew he meant what he said. After an uncomfortable silence he asked, “Why did you stay?”

“Honestly, I wanted to know what had you so worked up. I’ve never seen you as worried as you were today and I wanted to make sure everything was ok.” He hoped Orli would understand and not think he’d gone all stalker on him.

Orli smiled, “I don’t care what everyone else says about you, Bean, you’re an ok bloke.”

They both laughed and Sean put his hand on Orli’s head and pushed him backwards, “Punk!” He stood and extended his hand to Orli who accepted the offered help and was pulled to his feet. “God everyone is talking about you being skinny but you weigh a ton.”

Orli scoffed and hit him on the shoulder, “Wanker!”

“Everything ok?” a soft voice broke in.

Orli tried indignantly to wipe the tears from his face knowing full well that his eyes were all puffy and swollen anyway. “Yeah,” he smiled. “I’m sorry about that Linda, I didn’t mean to…”

“Shush! No apologies Orli, I feel the same way. I know how concerned you are and I can’t tell you how much we appreciate what you’re doing for her, for us.”

~end flashback~

Sean had promised Orli that he wouldn’t say anything to any one about what he was doing. He said he didn’t want to ruin his reputation by making people think he was a nice guy but Sean knew it was really because he couldn’t take the pain of everyone mentioning Emily. It was a brutal week for the young Brit, only being able to see Emily through the window of her hospital room, having to watch her cry and not being able to comfort her then having to wait to see if her body accepted the bone marrow. He got the call one afternoon during their lunch break that the transplant had been successful and to that day Emily was a perfectly happy, healthy little girl and her family still said their angel had something to do with it.

“Sean, are you ok?”

The touch broke him out of his thoughts and he looked up to see Viggo standing beside of him with a concerned look on his face. “I’m fine mate, just thinking about something in the past.” He stood, hugged Viggo and smiled, “I’ll be back. I have something I have to do!”
