Overall summary: A forbidden romance set in 1700’s Southern Carolina territory. A middle-aged magistrate, down on his luck and guilty from his previous acts in life, chances upon his next beautiful young clerk in a wretched almshouse. Against his better judgment Viggo brings the fair youth into his life. What has he done to himself? Worse yet, can the obsessed with beauty Viggo control himself? Jealous guilt spreads her midnight wings and waits for her tormented chances.
Chapter 6 Summary: VO 1st POV. A controversial witchcraft trial set on a storm-lashed island drives an emotional wedge between Viggo and his stubborn clerk. When a cautious Viggo confronts Orlando over certain dangerous issues, Orlando reveals a facet of his personality which delights poor lovelorn Viggo. When the clock strikes midnight, subtle magic takes place.
