Overall summary: A forbidden romance set in 1700’s Southern Carolina territory. A middle-aged magistrate, down on his luck and guilty from his previous acts in life, chances upon his next beautiful young clerk in a wretched almshouse. Against his better judgment Viggo brings the fair youth into his life. What has he done to himself? Worse yet, can Viggo control himself? Jealous guilt spreads her midnight wings and waits for her tormented chances.
Chapter 1 Summary: VO 1st POV. Viggo travels to Kingston in the New York colony with the intent to procure a new clerk for his southern journey. Amidst decay he finds youthful perfection. Viggo knows selecting the fair youth will test his will, yet perhaps this is what guilt demands from him, an ultimate test of self-control. After all, the boy can spell.
