Maybe it's much too early in the game
But I thought I'd ask you just the same
What are you doing new year's
New year's Eve?

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night
Welcoming in the new year
New year's Eve

Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received

But in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance
What are you doing new year's
New year's Eve?

Another New Years Eve, another hotel room in another city.

“Where am I?” Orlando thought to himself. He knew he wasn’t asking where physically, but more where was he in his life.

He sprawled out fully clothed on the king size bed. “I’m all alone on New Year’s Eve that is one thing I know.”  He wondered who he could call, who would be around in whatever city he was in.

“No One.”  There wasn’t one person he wanted to call.

“Well, that’s a lie.”  His conscience said to him, and a big one at that.

“There is one person you want to call. There is one person you want more than anything else in this material plane called earth.”  His conscience taunted him. It reminded him of what he’d had and lost.  He’d lost what everyone wanted.

“Love.” Tears gathered in his eyes, tears he thought he had finished shedding months ago. He thought he was empty of them.

“You know better than that, you will never be rid of his memory.”  His thoughts tormented him.

He laughed, he was so cliché. Sitting alone on New Year’s Eve lamenting a lost love. The phrases of a song filtered through his mind.

“Maybe it's much too early in the game”

No, it was too late.

“But I thought I'd ask you just the same”

He’d asked for too much already.

“What are you doing New Year's, New year's Eve?”

He knew what the other man was doing. He was in his solitude, reading an obscure book, no doubt, with whisky in hand in front of a fire while snow piled up outside his door in Idaho.

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight”

He wanted it to be him.

“When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night”

The other man would most likely forget about the time, never realizing that it had passed.

Maybe I'm crazy to suppose, I'd ever be the one you chose

The other man did choose him, and he threw it away. He threw it all away.

“But in case I stand one little chance”

Did he have any chances left when it came to this man? Had he used up all his chances?

“What are you doing New Year's, New Year's Eve?”

Without even realizing it his hand was on his phone, dialing numbers he had committed to his memory long ago.   He was just about to hang up when the other man answered.

“Hello, Orlando.”

“Hello Viggo.”
