Title: Silver Mistletoe (1/?)
Author: Elvish Lady
Rating: PG-13 for now. Will be NC-17
Summary: An old tradition puts Orlando and Viggo in an awkward position.
Disclaimer: Sorry, if I owned these two they would be VERY open about their relationship. Sadly, I don’t own them and probably never will.
Beta: Juniper
A/N 1: It has been about 2 months since I have written anything, so bare with me. I am writing this on my time off, which is very little since I’m about to start school again soon. I will be writing this on the weekends and any odd off time I get. Holly, Michelle, and Beth – thank you all for telling me that I have to write or you’ll kill me in my sleep. I Love you all.
A/N 2: Please note that this story is based on an actual tradition. It’s an old tradition that isn’t used very much anymore, but when I visited my relatives in Germany, they loved to tell stories about the old Christmas balls and the interesting ways that the couples actually got together. Please review!

Years ago a tradition was born in the area that is now Germany and Poland. The tradition, called The Christmas Engagement, was made when a sprig of silver mistletoe was attached to a cord and then included in the decorations of a masquerade Christmas ball that the entire town attended each year.

At midnight, the last dance would be called and couples would flood the floor. All married couples knew who their spouse was, of course, and were required to dance with their significant other. However, the rest of the attendees were free to choose a dance partner, with enough prodding from their parents, of course. At the end of this dance the couples would unmask their partner and find out whom they were dancing with. At that time a sprig of silver mistletoe would be lowered from where it was hidden in the decorations and everyone would look up to see who was under the mistletoe.

If the couple under the mistletoe was already married, then it tradition said that they would have a very fruitful year. If the couple was not married, then it was said that they would be married before the next Christmas.

And to this date the silver mistletoe has never been wrong…

“Honestly Mom, I can’t go to the Christmas ball this year. Work has been crazy since I took over the firm last month, and I just can’t find the time to get away right now.” Orlando Bloom explained to his exasperated mother as he shifted the cell phone from ear to ear so he could maneuver the files that his secretary had just handed him.

“This sudden change of heart wouldn’t be because I invited Exene, her ex-husband and Henry, would it?” Sonia asked with a suspicious note in her voice.

“Of course not Mum, but I don’t understand why you had to invite that man to the ball. Exene divorced him years ago. Besides, you know how I feel about him.” He replied as he signed yet another piece of paper that was laying on his desk before looking at it again to make sure that he had signed the correct paper.

“Orlando, I know you and Viggo have bad blood from way back when you and he were in show business but you really shouldn’t take it out on my friends.”

“I’m not taking it out on your friends Mum.” He said with a sigh. “You are bound and determined to make me feel guilty about me not coming aren’t you?”

“Orli, I only get to see you and Sammy together three times a year. Christmas, New Year, and my birthday, and for the past few years you have been ducking out before the New Year rolls around. I just want my friends and everyone else that is coming to see you, Samantha and me together for once. Sam had to duck out last year because of the boys. This year she and David found a nanny so I am fully exploiting my desire to be with you all at the ball.”

“Fine Mum. I’ll be there. I may not like it, but I’ll be there.”

“Great! Now remember that you have…”

“To have a new costume. I know Mum. I have been to the ball before.”

“I just want to make sure.”

“Did you invite Sean and Karl?”

“Of course I did. Do you think I would be so heartless as to not invite anyone you could talk to without having to talk shop? I also invited Liv and her husband, and Elijah, Bill, and Dominic. So there will be plenty of people for you to have fun with while you’re here.”

“Thanks Mum. I should be up there in a few days to help you with everything. I need to finish up with some paperwork.”

“Take your time, dear. The people you hired to help me are doing just great. Just make sure you are here in time for the ball. And remember…” she began.

“Tell no one what your costume is.” They finished together.

“I know Mum. I’ll see you when I get there. I love you.” Orlando chuckled at the number of times his mother felt the need to remind him about his costume.

His mother had been hosting this party ever since he was a child. His family had observed the tradition of the Silver Mistletoe for generations. It had been how his parents had met, in fact. They had been the couple under the mistletoe one year. By the next Christmas, just like tradition said, they were married.

“I love you too.” She replied, hanging up.

Orlando pinched the bridge of his nose. This was going to be one LONG holiday.
