Title: My Stranger

Warnings: This is my very first drabble, so please be kind :) And I apologize for the lack of cut, but I can't figure out how to make a link for the life of me!

"Hey there monkey boy!"

 

Even up here I am not safe from their taunts

My long, clumsy limbs and my little ears

My stupid brain that causes me to stutter and stammer

My dad always said to keep still, quiet and out of the way

And he gave me good reason to obey this

But even up here I am not safe

I tried to melt away in between the branches

I climbed the tallest tree I could find and curled up small and clung to the branch nearby

A lovers embrace, closeness that no other person will allow

 

They've stopped.  There's someone down there shooing them away

A man, tall and angry looking

Like my dad, scary and not to be reckoned with

I shrink farther back into the foliage

He looks up and spots me and my breath hitches as our eyes connect

He's smiling up at me and his expression is gentle and hesitant as if not wanting to frighten

He seems so kind and understanding

It must be a trick, a trap

He lures me down and then I'm punished

 

He holds out a hand and whispers something to me

Without thinking, I lean closer

And the gentle words reach my ears

 

"Hey, it's ok. They've gone."

 

I want, so much, to go to this man

His eyes are so sharp, the blue piercing through me as if to see into my very soul

 

He's talking to me, but even though his words don't carry, his voice is that of a distant lullaby

A lullaby rocking me gently in my tree

Against all my better judgment, I am drawn to him

He made the mean boys go away

He looks upon me with kindness

A stranger taking the time to notice me

 

As I begin to descend, he tilts his head and grins a crooked, reassuring grin

I give a small hesitant smile in return

He comes closer as I approach the bottom and I am lost and ours eyes connect yet again

Distracted, I loose my grip and I fall

Not very far to the ground, but I feel the terror of falling forever with ground approaching fast

I squeeze shut my eyes and brace for the pain that never comes

 

Opening my eyes, I realize he caught me

My stranger caught me

He's holding me close now, while I tremble with shock and confusion

I cling back as if he is the nearby branch I was so intimate with before

He smiles down at me

 

"My name is Viggo," he says.

"I"m here to chase away the dark.

I'm here to protect you from the cruelty and taunts.

I'm here to draw you out of hiding.

And I'll always be here from now on to catch you if you should fall."

 

I sigh and relax into his warmth

He's real and so strong and I feel good and alive

I trust this man

 

"My name is Orlando," I whisper up at him

He leans in as if to hear me better

I continue, softer now...

"And I thank you for rescuing me before it was too late...

I dreamt of you once...I think..."

 

He whispers back as his words caress my lips

"Dream no more..."
