Lips had touched, tongues had mingled, and fingers had sunk in one another’s hair as soon as the door closed behind Orlando. It had been horrible, those two years of separation that had been forced on them, or more like Orlando forced upon Viggo as he had shunned away from bliss one night in Los Angeles, too afraid of everything, fearing he’d ruin their lives if he let his emotions free.
They had only had the fool’s hope of someday being able to give in, forget about the consequences and the morning after. Heartbreak was possible to live with, but only to a point, a point of where they had to decide what to do.. The rational part of them both spoke of marriage and children, of commitment and that as time passed by, they’d fall in love with their better halves. They weren’t blind, though, believing in the rationality of it all; they had their eyes wide open, hearts too, and knew they’d never forgive themselves if they didn’t fight for hope.
This secret getaway in a hotel somewhere in Copenhagen had been arranged through their managers, through hand written letters, so even their closest family or friends didn’t know where they had gone to. In these letters, they had agreed on meeting, after two years of sadness, ready to let their love rule their actions.
They had ended up in bed, had made love for hours making up for the time they had lost, cherishing every breath, every moan, every smile and every tear. They knew this was it, the only way they could be together, cheating on their fiancées, betraying the public, breaking the wall they had built between them. They didn’t know how long they’d be able to continue this before guilt got the better of them, but until then they would hold on to the fragment of hope they had, no matter how far apart they’d be.
They shared a sad goodbye in the middle of the night as Viggo had to leave, commitments in USA pulling him from Orlando’s arms. Orlando clung to his arm like his life depended on it, and in a way it did, pulled slightly, making Viggo stumble back to bed, in his arms. It broke Viggo’s heart to see Orlando’s brown eyes impossibly big, full of tears, full of loss and it was clear that part of Orlando regretted this. Part of Viggo did too.
“Remember this...” he choked on, his voice strained, weepy.
“Always,” Viggo said before pulling away, wiping his own eyes and grabbing his suitcase from the floor before he hurried out of their room, out of the hotel and out of Orlando’s life.
Even though the door softly clicked shut, it was a loud bang in Orlando’s ears and he crumbled, crying now, hugging his knees in the middle of the bed in the darkness. The bed sheets were bundled in his lap, a painful reminder of what they had shared. Somehow they reminded him of how fleeting their secret moment had been, would always be. Feeling how his poor, battered heart was splitting in two, he fell asleep without the want to greet the following day.
