CHAPTER INDEX

Late spring, 2010...
The doors of the tiny magistrate chapel clicked shut and opened again as family and friends walked through them. Orlando had been right about certain things regarding the marriage announcement. His mother had indeed squealed, but hadn’t fainted as he had predicted. Sam yelled at him so hard on the phone Orlando thought he’d be temporarily deafened. Beanie came by the other day and punched both on their shoulders and gave them a lesson on how blind love can be. Viggo and Orlando had also made a visit to Grace and Viggo Sr. Grace had always liked Orlando, this well -behaving British gentleman and her tearing up was to be expected. Viggo Sr. was so happy he babbled in Danish. Orlando understood just enough Danish that he knew Viggo’s dad was happy to welcome him to the Mortensen family – finally. Viggo’s brothers were a true pain in their asses but in a good way. They cracked dirty jokes all the while laughing and clapping their backs.
Now, Viggo and Orlando were standing in front of the priest in matching suits listening to him reading through beautiful words in the form of Viggo’s poem he had written one late night. Orlando was nervous, this being his first marriage ever, and the last one as well he had vowed, so he slid his hand along Viggo’s linking their fingers. He felt Viggo squeezing him back and he relaxed. They were going to do this together. He wouldn’t have to be alone anymore.
They turned to face each other when the priest finished the poem and the prayer. They were given the freedom to speak out their vows. When Viggo had been standing in front of Karl about the pledge to him, Viggo had looked happy. Now, with Orlando he looked serene. Orlando also noted the same thing.
“...I’ve known it all along that it’s you I am meant to share my days with. I am honoured to grow old with someone like you.” Viggo finished his vow, feeling silly and emotional. Orlando took a napkin and gently wiped Viggo’s leaking eyes. Then he began his string of vows. He had to blink a few times while he was telling Viggo how he had touched the deepest core inside. They both started to chuckle as they realized they both were crying now. They also understood it was something they couldn’t control.
When the permission to kiss came, Viggo couldn’t wait any longer. He pulled Orlando into a soft and long kiss. They both started laughing but kept kissing. Soon it became a little too difficult so they broke apart and kept on laughing while hugging each other. The priest announced them legally married and the cheering filling the small chapel increased.
Orlando looked at his ring finger amazement written all over his face. There were two simple rings telling him and the rest of the world where he belonged. With Viggo. “Amazing, huh?” Viggo asked with a low voice. Orlando curled his fingers into a fist as if to protect the precious items and looked up. The rest of the world ceased to exist around them as their eyes met. The same feeling had hit them both about ten years earlier. They smiled and shared an intimate moment touching each others’ faces.
Sam was looking at her little brother falling head over heels in love with Viggo all over again and cast a look over to her mother. “Should I retrieve you a bucket or something?” she teased and was rewarded with a slap to her arm. She started laughing out loud.
“Don’t you dare make any comments when I’m emotional,” Sonia replied sophisticatedly, wiping her eyes. Sonia had always been open-minded and a bit of a hippie so she had always encouraged her children to pursue love, whether or not it was with someone of the same gender. She was only overjoyed now that her baby got married.

Viggo and Orlando had arranged an after party at the backyard of their house. It originally was Viggo’s but they figured it was time to share everything, so Orlando got a whole new set of keys. They also wanted to celebrate in private.
The wedding cake was on a table under a huge maple tree. Flashlights started blinking when Orlando attempted to cut the cake. Viggo ran to the scene straight from the house and pressed his hand firmly on Orlando’s. They were a weird sight cutting the cake. Both of them were in clean but regular clothes, Viggo faithful to his ways, his feet bare. They both were uncomfortable in suits and there were their family and friends present, so it didn’t matter how they were dressed, they figured.
“Fuck, I’ve created a monster,” Viggo growled into Orlando’s ear as he realized Henry was taking his time trying to capture the perfect photograph. Orlando burst out laughing and leaned a little against Viggo and then the flash came.
“Good job, guys,” Henry commented and Orlando stuck his tongue out. Henry answered him the same way. Viggo ended up scratching his head wondering what on earth he had gotten himself into.

“Look at them,” Orlando breathed watching their families and friends communicating with each other. “Makes me feel like this is how we’ve always been, you know. It’s as if they’ve known each all their lives.” He was sitting on a swing next to Viggo watching the interaction.
“Yeah. And it eases my nerves to see my family isn’t pestering yours to the point of a fight.” They both laughed, enjoyed the chocolate cake, champagne and each other.

Later in the evening Viggo found a short moment to pick up the journal Orlando used to write in. He let his fingers brush over the pages, tracing the written words with his fingertips. The ring on his finger glimmered in the faint light reminding him all of the darkness of the past is put behind. Viggo began to smile as Orlando slumped next to him. “I’m so happy this journal will live through your art, Vig.” Orlando said kissing Viggo’s stubbled cheek. “I think it’s therapeutic for me, too, even though I don’t need this as a way to sort out my thoughts. Besides, a good journal will always be that...a good journal. We can look back when we are old and gray and reflect back on how we were, what we thought.” Smiling Orlando wound his arms around Viggo’s waist. Sighing, he looked how the pen started dancing on the page forming words. An absolutely dashing smile spread on his face as Viggo wrote: “... and the shadows of life are finally erased.”
