Viggo, an ER doctor sighed as he heard the secretary interviewing another patient. It was ten minutes until his shift would end and he was already fed up with meeting people for the day. It wasn't that he hated others. It was more of the continuous hustle and bustle in the ER. And many of the patients frustrated him to no end.
This new person, Viggo read from the computer screen, had been in a minor car accident and hurt his knees. Viggo went through the shock room and opened the pendulum doors and was met with his patient. "Would you follow me, Mr. Bloom?" he asked politely leading Mr. Bloom to a secluded room. "So, tell me what happened." he began and started examining the bruised knees. "Well, I was driving to work when somebody hit the back of my car. I hit my knees below the steering wheel and here I am, wanting to find out if something is wrong. I can't work if there's something broken." "What do you do, then?" "I'm a nurse in the pediatric ICU." "I see..." Viggo answered as he cast an overall look at Mr. Bloom. He was in his outfit with an 'Orlando Bloom' nametag pinned to the breast pocket. "You weren't interested in working in ER?" "When I had graduated nearly ten years ago, I applied for it but wasn't chosen. The P-ICU needed a nurse almost ASAP so I applied, needing the job pretty badly, and I kind of took that road since it was offered." "Why haven't you applied again?" "There seems to be the need for pediatric nurses upstairs and I like it. It's tough enough for me." "Fair enough." Viggo answered warmly and pressed a spot on Mr. Bloom's knee and heard a definitive hiss. "We better x-ray your left knee to see if the patella isn't fractured. I'll order that x-ray now. The place where they take those is through those doors..." Viggo pointed at the doors clearly visible to the room. "Come back to the waiting room after you are finished. One of the nurses will call you back in." "Okay."
Orlando stood up and limped through the doors and into the x-ray. He waited for his turn patiently reading crappy magazines and occasionally laughing inwardly to the Hollywood actors acting stupidly. He was then called in, he sat onto a table and was asked to reveal his knee. He did as he was told, put a lead filled vest and a collar on, and the x-ray was taken from two sides. Hopping off the table he thanked politely and headed to the waiting room.
A nurse called him back in almost immediately and he met doctor Mortensen again. "Okay, have a seat. I just looked at your x-rays and there's nothing broken. The sore spot looks to be a subcutane hematoma. You'll get a nice bruise there in a few days. Just take it easy for a few days, keep your legs elevated whenever you can and the pain will lessen a little. Other than that you are fine to go."
Orlando flashed a brilliant, bright smile and nodded looking straight into the most intriguing blue-gray eyes in his whole life. "Thank you, Viggo. Thanks a lot." Orlando said offering his hand. Viggo took it. "You're welcome, Orlando. I suggest you should try to apply for a job here. Keep it in mind." "I shall." "Have a nice day. Just call back here if your knees keep on hurting." "I will. Have a nice day as well."
Viggo smiled on his way home that evening. He realized his shift had been prolonged over thirty minutes. The bright smile he had received had made it worthwile. The loneliness he felt in his heart had been temporarily erased.
