CHAPTER INDEX
8
Viggo nearly jumped off the stool as a warm hand was pressed onto his shoulder. One of the ICU nurses had walked in. “I came to tell you, Mr. Mortensen, that the visiting hours are over. Come back a little later.”
Nodding Viggo looked at Orlando who had fallen asleep due to the analgetics injected into his system. “He’s painless now.” The nurse explained with a warm and soothing voice. “We’ll keep a close eye on him.” Nodding again Viggo walked to the door. Outside he took all the papery clothes off and gloves.
As Viggo got home it was nearing 8:00pm. “Where were you? I was getting worried.”
“Running errands, paid a few bills, had dinner out. Nothing much.” Viggo had done all of those just before entering the hospital.
“I hope you didn’t visit the City of Hope.” Karl said as Viggo walked past him.
“Not that it’s any of your business if I had personal things to take care of but what if I did?” Viggo didn’t wait for Karl’s answer, just went upstairs and took a long bath. As he descended the stairs Karl was waiting for him.
“I don’t like you associating with Or-fucking-lando.”
“First of all, Karl... His name is Orlando and I have every right to “associate” with him.” Viggo answered patiently.
“I’m your husband for crying out loud!”
“That might be but Orli is my friend.”
“Orli? ORLI?”
“Uh-huh.”
“That little bitch has always been in my way. He stole you from me. I can’t let that happen again.”
“Take that attitude and he’ll steal me back again. Now, shut up and take a shower. You stink.” With that Viggo took the remote and switched the TV on.
Viggo was reading a book when Karl came in. He slid under the covers and ran his open palm along Viggo’s bare stomach. “I don’t want to fight with you.”
“That hardly was a fight.”
“But still. I hate going to sleep if there’s cold air between us.”
Viggo tried to gently push the wandering hand away. He wasn’t in the mood for anything tonight. So many things had invaded his mind. When the wandering hand didn’t stop its movement, Viggo turned onto his side, his back towards Karl. The book in Viggo’s hands was completely forgotten.
“It was you, wasn’t it?” he asked quietly.
“What? Who?”
“It was you who infected Orli.”
Karl was quickly swept onto his feet. “How dare you accuse me of that?”
Viggo turned onto his other side and fixed a piercing gaze into Karl’s eyes. “You visited him while you were sick. You said you’d go out for a ‘pint with mates’ but instead of staying in the nearby pub the whole night, you miraculously found your way to him in the hopes of killing him maybe?”
Karl shook his head. “That’s not true.”
“Orlando said so.”
“You actually believe him?” Karl almost yelled. He was losing his composure. Viggo had found out.
“There’s another one. The receptionist saw you. It doesn’t take rocket science to put two and two together, Karl!” Viggo too was yelling now. “How stupid can you be? How blind in your jealousy?” Viggo demanded. He was furious now. “And how the hell did you know Orlando was at City of Hope?”
The smile spreading onto Karl’s face was somehow grotesque. “It’s simple. I overheard you talking with Seanie. You should learn to keep your mouth shut, Vig. Especially if your deranged husband is present.” Karl said with a mocking tone.
“I don’t need to. I’ve seen enough.”
“Of what?”
“Of you. You tried to kill Orlando by infecting him. You knew he was weak. You knew your bug could kill him.”
“And?” Karl asked a complacent expression on his face.
“I’m out...” Viggo announced.
“There’s the door.” Karl answered nonchalantly.
“...of this marriage.” Viggo said with a voice that made the self-important Karl scared. He was in trouble now. Big trouble.
Viggo stood up. He took Karl’s suitcase out of the closet and filled it with his clothes. “You’ll receive the papers in a few days. You know, if you hadn’t tried that stupid stunt with Orlando, I would have forgiven you. But infecting Orli was the final nail. That is something I can’t forgive you for. And you revealed yourself.”
“How do you suppose I did that, huh?”
With two long strides Viggo had covered their distance and with force pressed his chest against Karl’s. “With your silence. You should learn that sometimes silence speaks louder than words.” Viggo smiled but his eyes shot daggers. He shoved the full suitcase into Karl’s hands. “I want you and all of your belongings out of here by Monday.”
“You can’t do that! Where would I go? I’m your fucking husband!”
“Maybe you should have thought about that before you started scheming. Besides this is MY house, I own it so I’ll say who stays in and who doesn’t. And frankly you stopped existing on the list. There’s a hundred bucks for you. Now, get out of my sight.” Viggo dug into his wallet, shoved a hundred dollar bill into Karl’s hand and showed him the door.
The next day Viggo had phone calls to make. First he called Sean and told him everything. Sean promised to come visit him soon. Then he called Sonia, told her everything as well. Sonia started immediately arranging a flight to the States. Then there were Lij, Dom, Billy and Astin next. After ending the last call, he made himself breakfast and went out. He went to the courthouse where they had registered the marriage and asked for its annulment, stating that some irreconcilable things had taken place crushing the marriage. Luck was on Viggo’s side. The marriage had been so short the invalidation didn’t need juridical battle.
With a light heart Viggo walked out. He’d go to the hospital next. He didn’t know what he thought when he had started dating Karl. Back then Karl had seemed like a decent guy with a good head on his shoulders. As Viggo thought of the past more he realized the looks Karl had bestowed on him. And now that he paid more attention he realized Karl had slowly changed. But what had kept him with Karl for so long? Maybe he had THOUGHT he loved Karl. Maybe he had made himself believe he could be with Karl. He berated himself for not being stronger when he started drifting apart from Orlando. He could have tried to save that relationship. Dropping his head Viggo voiced out what he knew had always been true: he loved Orlando. He had never stopped loving him.
