Silence filled the brightly lit room. Every now and then the eerie quietness was pierced by an occasional hiss or beep coming from the machines. There were six patients lying on their beds inside the room, separated with curtains from one another. Each patient had a private nurse sitting nearby, a chart on their lap.

Orlando was still in his bed. There was a myriad of lines, tubes and IVs beside him. He had sensors on his forehead and leading somewhere inside his left arm. A tube stuck out of his mouth and it was taped to his face and hooked in place with a ribbon of some sort. Orlando also had three electrodes on his stomach: one near his right collarbone, one near the left one and another hidden under his cover on his side.

Orlando had been driving along a road in attempt to meet a friend in Malibu when a drunk driver had hit his car. The impact had been so strong it had made Orlando collide with the wall at a tunnel opening. Doctors had put him in a drug induced coma to let his body recover from everything: the accident itself and the surgery that was needed to repair his ruptured spleen.

The nurse kept a close eye on the EEG that was drawn on the screen above Orlando. There had been a change in the texture that caught the nurse’s interest. The oxygen saturation level in his arteries had also raised a little bit being 96% now. The nurse then paged the doctor who was on call. Something was happening now that needed a doctor.

When the doctor walked into the room and straight to Orlando’s bed, Viggo’s heart jumped to his throat. He knew he wasn’t allowed to go into the room so he had to witness everything through a window next to the door. The doctor stared at the screen for a few seconds, then at the chart. Orlando’s cheeks were caressed and his name was called loudly. The doctor stared at the screen again, put vinyl gloves on and switched the ventilator off. It took only a few seconds for Orlando to start moving on the bed, spasms hit his body as if he had an epileptic seizure or a bad cough. Another order to open eyes was shouted. To look at all that behind a window and still hear everything was horrifying. Viggo gasped when the movements became stronger and the doctor pulled the tube out. Loud gurgling and wheezing filled the otherwise quiet room. A manual mask was put on Orlando’s face and his head was bent backwards to keep his windpipe open. The sensor was removed from his arm and a heavy bag of sand was placed on top. Then Orlando was wheeled out of the room.

“We have some very good news for you, Mr. Mortensen. Mr. Bloom here woke up from the coma we had put him in. Everything in his stats looks absolutely great and we are taking him to the recovery room now. He won’t need the ventilator anymore because he is able to breathe on his own now, which is good. We’ll still keep him under observation for a number of days, run some tests and then let him go home.”

“Thank you, for everything you’ve done for him.”

“No problem, Mr. Mortensen,” the doctor walked away then and Viggo ran after the nurse and Orlando.

Viggo took a seat and sat on it beside Orlando’s bed. He took a small framed photo from his breast pocket and placed it on Orlando’s night stand before taking Orlando’s hand in his.

The gentle touch made Orlando’s fingers twitch. He knew who was there with him and that made him want to open his eyes more and more. He had to fight hard to open them since his eyelids still felt like lead.

After nearly ten minutes of waiting, Viggo witnessed the liquid brown eyes fluttering open. Viggo stood up then and reached over the railing that was attached to the bed. He placed a small kiss on top of Orlando’s forehead tasting the bitter traces of glue left there by the EEG sensor. “Hey...” he whispered not trusting his voice.

Orlando’s answer was only a mumble. Nothing had prepared Viggo for what came next. Orlando’s eyes fell shut but a smile spread on his face instead. It was the reassurance Viggo needed. He would still have his Orlando.
