Orlando extended his hand and leaned against a table. It was summer outside and the practical nurse in charge of him had left the window open. He had told her not to because it stiffened his back but today he felt like it was welcome. Today it was exactly 14 months since Viggo passed away. God had granted him an exceptionally long life. Orlando had made sure that there’d be exactly ninety white roses family and friends could throw to the grave.
They had done a good job at bringing up their three kids. Now Julian, Gabrielle and Mason were successfully married and had kids of their own. Yes, Viggo and Orlando had seven grandkids together. But Henry had given Viggo four more. Life was more than good.
Orlando took a picture of Viggo in his hands and looked at it. The photo was a snapshot he had taken himself and cherished above any other. Viggo was young in it and happy. Orlando sat down on his rocking chair putting his walking stick safely against the table. Closing his eyes he leaned back and dreamed of being in New Zealand again, in 1999, when he met Viggo for the first time and fell in love. And that’s where the practical nurse found him later in the evening.
Orlando was sitting in his old rocking chair a smile on his face and Viggo’s photograph on his lap. It wasn’t a secret that Orlando was terminally ill at 71. He had known for a while now that he wouldn’t see the fall again but he was happy. He had managed to create a career in the film industry and while being very successful and in demand he had been given the chance to start a family. And all of their kids had grown to be reasonable and good people. And he had been loved with enthusiasm and care, something so many others only wished to be true.
There was a blank space on the tombstone next to Viggo’s name. That’s where his name was carved now with silvery letters. That’s where his place had always been and will always be, next to Viggo.
