Notes: I don’t use betas; any errors are solely and completely my fault. The Fractal Series is a sequence of stories that all start with the same line and often echo or quote each other. However, none of these stories take place in the same universe or continuity, and none of the events in any story affect events in the other stories. Some stories are closer to each other than others, and they all begin in the same place, but diverge at different points.

Beauty like that destroys film as surely as light in the darkroom does, and Viggo's spent years turning his mind into a camera. He's suddenly not sure if this job was a good idea, not when he can't breathe upon suddenly seeing a co-star. His mind may not survive this man.

There are some photographs that should never be taken. Viggo knows this, but when he comes across Orlando unexpectedly, how can he not press the shutter?

If those photographs are taken, they should be out-of-focus. Viggo grants Orlando that, and when he develops the roll, he doesn't print the shot. He grants Orlando that, and he never tells Orlando that he took the picture. He grants Orlando that, too, because some photographs should never be taken. Some pain should stay private.

Orlando looks up when the flash goes off, and they stare at each other for a long moment. "You saw me," he murmurs, and Viggo shakes his head. "The camera saw you. The camera loves you, Orlando." Orlando laughs briefly, and Viggo takes another photograph. "You saw me," Orlando insists. "I don't know how or why, but you see me, yeah?"

"Yeah," Viggo says, because Orlando doesn't seem to mind that he's taken a forbidden photograph. He'll agree to anything right now if he can get a shot that balances right on the edge between the two realms. It's been waiting for him, ever since he met Orlando, and he wants it. He wants it. He wants Orlando, too, but not as much as he wants the photograph.

The boy is dancing, eyes closed, mouth wet, body loose and open the way Viggo knows it would be after orgasm, and since when does he think about his barely legal costar's sex life? The flash goes unnoticed in the club, only another bright light there and gone, and Orlando is gone, only his image remaining, and it's all over.

Orlando is asleep and he looks twelve years old. When Peter calls "Cut!" for the last time, Viggo carries the snapshot in his wallet to remind him that memories can be true and even movie stars need to sleep and Orlando is and always will be too young.

The next time the camera is turned on him, he tries to be gracious about it -- penance for his sin, but the lens is too easy to please, and he pushes the blank curved glass aside to see the bright-dark eyes of the photographer who wants exactly the more that Viggo is willing to give.

The rain leaves streaks on the lens and when Viggo develops the roll, Orlando is in and out of focus. He looks at the blurry image of himself and asks, "Is that what I look like?" and Viggo can only shrug. Orlando's focus is both inward and outward, the stillness of his character and the manic energy of his gesture, and he shouldn't know that, and Viggo regrets that he does now.

There are some photographs that should never be taken. Viggo knows this, but when he comes across Orlando unexpectedly, how can he not press the shutter?

Orlando is laughing at nothing, and that night, Viggo deliberately unwinds the film and labels it not to be developed. prohibido. and puts it with all the other forbidden rolls.

wow, i love this. just the way you capture these little moments and maybe it doesn't add up to a *story* exactly, but it's all enough to understand and get in viggo's head, feel what he's feeling.
