Kate entered the large room almost vibrating with the intensity of the many people talking and having fun. The New Line Cinema Oscars Party was one of the biggest times of the year. Everyone had sectioned off into groups of friends and co-workers as they talked about the last year of films and the success of New Line Cinema in this years Oscars. She was used to entering places with an entourage, namely people who worshiped her and others on her level. But she was almost alone, only coming with her latest co-star, but he had left her as soon as he saw his fiancée. As she walked toward the center of the room she noticed a group to the left laughing heartily at their circular table.
She started to head over to the group, knowing that she could probably find a director or producer that would be willing to place her into a film. She felt out of place in the large crowd where she knew little to no people, but she was a resourceful woman who prided herself on her intellect even though she was a bit of a ditz. After all, she had been accepted to Princeton.
On approaching the group she paused as she recognized several people on the opposite side of where she was. Nicole Kidman, who was sitting with her husband, and Heath Ledger with his wife were in her direct line of view, others blocked or turned at an angle where she couldn’t make out who they were. She had only met Nicole once and liked the woman, especially since she knew so many different directors so intimately. She could even forgive her marrying a country music star. This would be a night of opportunity, she could feel it. She pasted an expression of happy recognition on her face, squared her shoulders and stepped forward once, but stopped again when she heard an all too familiar voice before the table erupted in laughter again.
The air in Kate’s lungs exited with a whoosh, and she tried to gulp air again, but couldn’t seem to. Why? Why was it that Orlando had to be here? She was sure that it wasn’t just him, but also that horrid man who had stolen him from her just as she was going to be able to attach him to her forever.
She shook her head to clear it. It didn’t matter. So what if Orlando was at the party? She could deal. She would just ignore him. She had been able to do so since the disaster that was the wedding nine months before, and she would do so now. With her head high and a tick in her jaw she proceeded around the table and to Nicole.
“Nicole!” she exclaimed and appeared to all to be delighted to see the woman. Nicole turned at her name and upon seeing Kate, motioned for her to come closer.
“Kate, how nice to see you again!” she said as Keith stood and grabbed another chair. “Come! Sit! We were just talking about things that we did this year. Orlando has been telling us about a mishap that happened with some fan girls in Japan.” Kate looked around the table and realized that she had sat down in a snake pit. Viggo of all people was sitting across from her, Orlando on one side, Sean on the other. A man that she vaguely remembered Orlando working with in that Rings movie, but couldn’t quite remember his name, sat beside Sean and Johnny and Vanessa beside him.
“Kate, how lovely to see you again.” Ewan McGregor said from where he sat between Orlando and Michelle.
“You too. You look good. How are you?” Kate said with a pasted on smile as she tore her eyes away from Orlando to look at the other man.
“I’m doing well. Thankful that the movie did so well.” He said as he grinned boyishly, darting a look over at Orlando.
“Yes, I heard that you got best supporting actor, congratulations. The movie was wonderful. I really thought you deserved it.” Kate said even though she hadn’t seen the movie. She had known enough about the movie from Orlando, who had starred in it, to get by in a conversation, but the movie had premiered just after Orlando had left her at the altar for no reason other than he was enjoying fucking his toy more than he wanted to be with her. Kate mentally growled at the man sitting across from her. Fucking whore.
“All of the credit goes to Orlando. If he wasn’t so alive and dedicated to his work, I don’t think that it would have been the success it has been.”
Orlando blushed before hushing Ewan. “You deserved it, and you know it. I had nothing to do with YOUR performance.” He said with a great smile that made Kate want to take a step back. She had never seen that smile while she was with him. She thought she had known all of his expressions, especially the happy ones.
“I seem to owe you congratulations as well.” Kate said pleasantly, but begrudging him every moment he sat there, his smile and whole demeanor pissing her off.
“Thank you. That means a lot coming from you.” He said as he smiled brightly at her before turning his attention to someone else who called him. Kate was appalled. He was dismissing her like she was some kind of bug.
He was ruining the evening. Everything was a complete disaster! She was supposed to be fawned over by people, but it seemed that no one of importance was even approaching the table.
“Doesn’t Orlando look wonderful? He really has come into himself this last year.” Michelle said with a whisper over her husband. “I’m so glad you don’t resent his happiness. You know it takes a very strong, self-assured woman to be able to come over here and sit with her ex after what happened. I’m glad you are like that.”
Kate gritted her teeth internally, before waving off Michelle’s comment. “I could never hold Orlando back from what he truly wants.”
Michelle smiled at her lovingly. “You are a good woman, Kate.” She said as she reached over and patted her hand.
Kate almost snarled at the woman, but decided that Heath hadn’t lost the weight and muscle from his last role yet, so it wouldn’t be a wise idea to do so. Besides she shouldn’t waste the energy she needed until she got home and ate her rice cake. Instead she simply plastered on a gratuitous expression. “Thank you.”
As the hour wore on since she had arrived, Kate became more and more annoyed with the people she was sitting with. No one was even discussing the business and who they were getting a deal with! Instead it was all dull talk about children and who was doing what project with the homeless and AIDS, and what ever ‘humanitarian’ project they were doing. Kate did humanitarian work, but only to keep the impression that she did. Who did people think she was- that fat cow Angelina Jolie?
Karl Urban, Kate had finally remembered his name, asked her what she was doing lately, obviously flirting with her, and she responded with bright enthusiasm that she was going to be heading out to Sydney in the next few weeks for the sequel to ‘Superman Returns’.
Instead of giving her the enthusiastic response she was expecting, the other people at the table looked at her like she was a stranger. “Excuse me.” She said as she stood from her seat. It was time that she left, these people were a disgrace to the movie industry, and therefore she would not waste any more time on them. “I’ll be right back.” She grabbed her purse and made her way for the bathroom that lay on the other side of the room. As she left the table she could feel the eyes burning into her back. Well Orlando and Viggo were just going to have to get over it. She had some of the same friends as they did and they were NOT going to ruin this night for her. Kate set her jaw in an almost haughty pose while on the inside she shook off the thought of the two men.
As she entered the bathroom she noticed a box on the table filled with cigarettes and lady’s cigars. Death sticks she called them she had quit about three months before the wedding and had tried to get to get Orlando to quit as well. Everyone knew that they would kill you. Probably laced with nitroglycerin as well as everything else. Besides, it was a nasty habit and made you smell. After she stopped she had realized how bad it really was and from then on couldn’t stand to touch Orlando when he had been smoking. That must have been the beginning of the end, she guessed. Orlando had been more than willing to give her whatever she wanted before then.
She passed the common area and into a stall closest to the door. You never knew when someone important may come in and you have to do your best to meet them. She heard the door open and the clicking of two sets of heels on the expensive stone and marble flooring.
“Can you even believe she is here?” She heard a new voice say. Oh, this was going to be good, she could tell. The best way to find things out about people was when someone thought there was no one around.
“Who?” another voice said.
“Kate Bosworth. You would think that by now she would realize that Orlando is NOT going to take her back, and if she ever wants to get a man in this century she needs learn to keep her legs shut.” The first voice said. Kate’s eyes flew wide as she realized that this woman was talking about her. And not only was she talking about her, she was calling her a whore and taking Orlando's side! It wasn’t fair, Orlando had left her at the altar!
“I don’t know Sarah, she seems nice to me. And didn’t Orlando leave her at the altar or something? And for another woman? It was all over the news for a while.” Kate cringed and thought that it wasn’t another woman Orlando left her for, it was a man. The very thought of the two of them together wanted to make her vomit, but it wouldn’t do to do so. She hadn’t had anything to eat all day, and all she would do would hurt herself.
“What does it matter? The man made the right decision. For god’s sake, the woman is cheap and a tramp. She literally sleeps with everything with two legs and a dick.” Tears stung at Kate’s eyes as she struggled to hold them back. Was this really happening to her? She was listening to these two women talk about her with her sitting no more than ten feet away.
This wasn’t right! She was an astounding actress, the press had proclaimed so themselves! She was a beautiful woman, with a killer body. She was one of the thinnest people in the world and she had worked hard to keep it!
“Are you serious? Is she really so bad? Man, if she was so bad, how did Orlando stay with her for so long?”
“Who knows? Anyway, let’s get back out there. I’m sure Peter is looking for us.”
The door closed after the two women and Kate slowly emerged from her stall. Looking at herself in the mirror she was appalled at what she saw. Her eyes were red from unshed tears and her lip was set in a snarl. This was all Orlando's fault. If he hadn’t left her on her wedding day her life wouldn’t be like this.
Kate glared at her reflection for a moment before shaking it off, adjusting her makeup and turning to leaving the restroom. She spied the cigarette box and was tempted to take just one to ease her nerves, but shook it off almost immediately.
She was fine. If Orlando and his floozy boyfriend wanted to be together that was ok with her. She had her ways. She would get even.
As she approached the table where Orlando and his friends sat, Kate deflated at what she saw. Viggo placed a discrete hand on Orlando's arm and Orlando looked him in the eye and a soft smile crossed his face. As she watched the small exchange, she realized that that look was more intimate than anything that she and Orlando had EVER shared.
They really did love each other. There was nothing she could do to ruin that. Orlando would give up everything for Viggo, including his career. Maybe it was for the better. With all of the ‘relationships’ she had had with men, nothing compared with what she saw. She had lost. Not even her electric (vindictive to everyone else) personality could change that.
Kate held her head up, self conscious of the people around her, as if someone could jump up and attack her, but mentally she hung her head. As she passed right behind Orlando and Viggo, she heard a quiet exchanging of words.
“I love you.”
