Orlando lay quietly on the bed, his breathing shallow. His face was pale as death and his lips had a tinge of dark blue to them. He looked very small in the large hospital bed, the covers that were piled around him did little to warm him.
Samantha sat by his side holding his hand. She prayed somehow they would find a heart replacement for her brother. She knew it was a long shot and his time was drawing short as the days progressed.
She brought her hand up to wipe away the tears that started to fall as she sat there quietly listening to the beeping of the heart monitor.
“Don’t cry Sam,” he whispered quietly. His eyes still closed as he barely talked.
“Shhh Orli,” she whispered softly back to him. “Don’t worry about me.”
“I…worry… about you and mum,” he said as he opened his eyes. “I worry about what will happen to you after….after I am…gone.” The last he barely spoke but she knew what he had said.
“Orli sweetie, don’t talk about stuff like that, Your going to be okay, I just know you are, so please, please, don’t say those words…they break my….” She paused.
“They break your heart,” he continued for her.
Sam took in a deep breath, “Yes Orli, that’s what it does, to mum and I.” She squeezed his hand tighter.
“I have been praying Orli, I pray everyday that we will find a heart for you. One that will match,” she continued. “Your name is at the top of the list, it will happen soon.”
Orlando nodded slowly. He didn’t want his sister to give up hope even though he had already done that long ago.
“I wish I could of just made it into acting, you know,” he said after a moment.
She smiled at him. “Yes, you were always quite the ham,”
Orlando smiled back. “Yeah, this was to be my final year at drama school, all set for auditions and such.”
“You will get your chance baby brother, you will, I just know it in my heart,” she squeezed his hand harder and leaned forward and whispered in his ear. “When we get back to England you can finish and get those auditions.
“I love you so much Orli, and I have faith in God that he will answer my prayers, and we will find a donor, and you will go into acting.” She kissed him lightly on the temple.
“I’m going to check on mum, you get rested up, okay?” she rose up and headed out the door.
“Sammy?” he called before she left. He looked at her as if it may be his last.
“Yes Orlikins?” she answered quietly.
“Tell mum I love her, okay?”
Sam suppressed the sob that welled inside her throat. “I will Orli, I will.” With that she closed the door softly behind her and leaned back against it. She let the torrent of tears that she had been holding back in the time she had been in the room with her brother. She didn’t want to appear weak to him. He needed her to be strong. For him and for their mum. “Oh Orli, I hope God hears my prayers.” With that said she went down to find her mum and tell her that Orli loved her.
