Nightmares
Viggo woke with a start when he heard the blood-curdling scream and ran as fast as he could out the door and down the hallway where he collided into Sean with a grunt. Regaining their composure, they both managed to get through the door at the same time and ran to Orli. Viggo put his hands around the trembling, sweaty face. “Shhh, angel it’s ok. Your safe.”
“We’re here love. Nothings going to hurt you,” Sean soothed as he rubbed his arm. Wide, tear-filled eyes searched both faces and finally calmed. Still crying hard he lunged into Sean’s arms, trembling. “Shhh,” he soothed as he rocked him slowly. “Tell me what happened love.”
“Hands, felt their hands and the belt, and the pain,” another sob. “Felt it just like it was happening again,” the small body trembling and struggling to breath.
Viggo stood to go get him some water so they could give him something to calm him down while Sean continued to hold him and rock him. “Never again Orli, never again. You’re safe here with us,” he soothed and reassured.
Viggo returned with a glass of water and an Ativan. Crawling over the bed so that he was facing Orli, “Here angel, take this.”
“W...what is it?”
“Something to calm you down a bit, that’s all,” Viggo reassured as he put the pill in his mouth. He was shaking so badly that Viggo had to help him hold the glass as he drank the water.
Sean could feel how bad Orli was shaking and also feel his sweaty skin cooling. He turned and laid him back down in the bed. “No!” Orli yelped and pawed at him trying to get back up. Tears anew streaming down his face and his breath coming in gasped pants. “Please!”
Sean picked him back up, put him in his lap so that they were facing each other and cradled him to his chest just as he would one of his little ones after a nightmare. Sean gently rocked him and whispered reassurances. Orli finally calmed a bit though he was still gripping Sean tight. Viggo closed his eyes trying to fight back his own tears. Knowing that Orli was not going to leave Sean and also knowing that he, himself, didn’t want to leave Orli he came up with an idea. “His sheets are soaked from where he’s sweated so bad and your bed is too small to be comfortable for the both of you so why don’t we all just lay down in my bed? It’s huge and I think everyone would be more comfortable.”
“I’d like that. Please Sean?” came a soft muffled reply from Sean’s chest.
The Brit nodded and stood, taking Orli with him carrying him like a child with his legs around his waist. He nodded for Viggo to lead the way. Once in the room Sean nearly sighed at the sight of the huge, soft, warm, inviting looking bed and mumbled, “nice.” He watched as Viggo turned the covers back on what was to be his side of the bed. “Thank you,” he smiled gratefully. Orli was small but heavy on Sean’s aching back and knees. He sat, somewhat awkwardly, while still holding Orli and settled back against the pillows with a happy sigh. Orli fidgeted a bit until he got comfortable, still perched against Sean’s chest holding him tight.
Viggo watched as his two friends lay down on his bed and was ashamed of himself over the large pang of jealousy he felt. He knew that Orli was scared and just needed to feel safe but he wanted to be the one he came to, the one he felt safe with. After silently chastising himself he started to his side of the bed but suddenly realized that Orlando might feel uncomfortable with him staying there. He took a steadying breath, walked over and picked up his pillow, and got a blanket out of the closet.
“Just where the bloody hell do you think your going?” Sean asked as he watched him.
“I’m going to sleep on the sofa.”
Sean felt Orli’s body stiffen and tremble against him. “Why would you do that?”
“I just don’t want Orli to feel uncomfortable. I thought being surrounded like that would...”
“Please stay,” Orli sobbed.
“Of course,” he immediately dropped the blanket, tossed the pillow back on the bed and climbed in. “I just didn’t want to upset you more,” he explained. Orli nodded and trembled. He reached down and pulled the blanket and the Duvet over both of them and himself. “Better?”
Orli shook his head no, “closer, please,” his voice pleading. Both men scooted toward the center of the bed until they were touching, which was no easy feat for Sean with Orli on top of him. Orli sighed and nuzzled under Sean’s chin sleepily, “Safe.”
Viggo watched as his eyes closed and his breathing evened out then looked to Sean. “Are you going be alright like that?”
Sean’s arms tightened around Orli’s waist, “Whatever it takes.”
The rest of the night was spent with little sleep for Orli and none at all for Viggo and Sean. It seemed as soon as Orli would fall asleep the nightmares would begin again and he would wake, flailing and screaming for help or sobbing and trembling uncontrollably. By morning Sean had moved to the sofa, Orli still in his lap though in a different position, and was trying to get him to rest some more. “Please love, just close your eyes and rest. We’ll be here when you wake up.”
Orli shook his head no. “It’s always happening again when I close my eyes. I can’t make it stop,” soft and tearful.
Sean ran his hand through Orli’s soft curls and wondered if the boy could be suffering from some sort of breakdown. He was broken from his thoughts when Viggo reappeared with a plate of toast and three steaming mugs.
He handed Sean a mug and smiled, “coffee, strong.” Sitting beside Orli’s legs he lifted another cup. “Tea for you, your favorite.”
He tried to take it but his hands were still shaking to bad so Viggo held it for him. He took a sip and then turned his head, “no more.”
“Yes more,” they both said at the same time. “You are going to drink your tea and at least eat a piece of toast Orli,” Viggo told him firmly.
“You can’t make me do anything!” he whined petulantly.
“I’m only trying to help you Orlando. Your taking medication and not eating is going to make you sick.”
“No!” he yelled and buried his face in Sean’s shoulder, effectively turning his back on Viggo.
Sean sighed when Viggo got up and paced the floor. He thought about what he ‘should’ do and what he ‘wanted’ to do then decided that Dr. Wesley had said to treat Orli like normal, not to make him think he was any different then before. Assuring himself he was right to do this and that it wouldn’t make things worse in the long run he stilled himself. “Orli, Viggo is only trying to help, now please, eat the toast.”
“No! I don’t have to and I won’t!” At which point Sean whopped him quiet smartly on his backside. Orli squeaked and threw his hands back looking up at Sean with big eyes.
Sean pulled Orli to a sitting position, still in his lap so he would feel safe and handed him a piece of toast. “Eat,” firmly, leaving no room for argument.
Orli started to say no but his backside was still stinging and he really wasn’t sure if Sean would do that again. Not willing to take the chance he took a bite of the toast. The toast was soon gone and with help so was the tea. He had to admit he felt a bit better, like he had a little more energy. Looking up at Sean with big chocolate eyes, “I’m sorry.”
Sean ruffed his hair and moved him to the sofa beside of him, still touching him but just not in his lap. “Me too love but you needed to eat and I need to go to the loo,” he laughed and stood stiffly.
Orli looked over to Viggo. He had his face buried in his hands, elbows resting on his knees and he looked as stiff as a board. “Vig I’m...”
He stood quickly and held up his hand to Orli. “Forget it,” he rasped and walked away.
