Ch.1

Orlando sighed as he sat in front of the fire place, it was almost midnight and Viggo had yet to come home. He had been sitting here for about two hours staring into the orange flickering flames and sipping on a cold bottle of beer.

Earlier he had brought out the box of photos Viggo had taken during their time in New Zealand. He had spread them all out on their bed, enjoying all the memories of his time with the fellowship. God, he missed them. He missed the hobbits and their crazy games, the way Elijah could always make him agree to anything by just looking at him with those big blue puppy eyes, or the way Sean would always tease him and try to make him mess up his lines. He knew Sean came off as a big scary man who could kill with just looks but Orlando knew that underneath it all he was as sweet and cuddly as a teddy bear.

Orlando missed the fellowship so much; he hadn’t seen them much in the last year. Dom was in Hawaii and Elijah and the two Sean’s off doing their next movie, Ian was at home in London, Billy was off doing something cleaver with a camera somewhere in the world, producing something great. He felt bad that he hadn’t really give much time to his friends lately, Orlando promised himself that he would give them all a call on Christmas.

Orlando had the pictures spread out because he thought it would be nice for him and Viggo to look through them when Viggo got back, but an hour had turned into two and two into three. Orlando at that point had put all the pictures away and retired to the living room of Viggo’s ranch. Well, their ranch now, or so Orlando thought. He wasn’t so sure anymore.

Orlando shifted to a more comfortable position on the floor, all his thoughts centered on his lover. Orlando remembered with a small smile the first time Viggo and him had made love. It was only a few months after Viggo had taken the part of Aragorn. One night after a long shot that hadn’t ended until close to night fall, Viggo and him were just leaving the makeup trailer when Viggo asked if he would like to come over for a drink. Orlando had agreed without hesitation, for he had fallen in love with Viggo the first moment he saw him. They both drank a lot that night and had ended up falling asleep drunk on the floor by the fire. When Orlando awoke sometime during the night he had rolled over and was surprised to see Viggo wide awake looking at him with so much love shinning in his eyes. No words were needed at that point. Orlando had scooted up closer to Viggo and they had shared their first kiss. Kisses led to wandering hands and wandering hands had eventually led to them making slow passionate love in front of the fire. And that had been it, after that they were inseparable.

After they had left New Zealand for good, they kept up their relationship in private away from the world. Eventually Orlando and Viggo couldn’t stand the distance and Orlando had moved to LA, to Viggo’s home, to a home that had eventually become theirs. Orlando remembered how furious Robin had been. She said it would ruin his career when the world found out he was gay. So Robin had Orlando bearded with Kate, something Orlando hated with a passion, but Viggo had also agreed that they should keep it up for Orlando’s career. And Orlando agreed because he would do anything that Viggo asked of him.

Viggo and Orlando had now been together for three years and Orlando’s love for Viggo had only grown stronger. But sometimes he wondered if Viggo still felt the same for him. Lately he felt that Viggo had grown bored with him, they didn’t make love as often as they had and Viggo spent so much time working with his paints or at his gallery doing business that Orlando felt lonely so often.

Both Orlando and Viggo had been given a month off from work and Orlando had suggested they go to the Idaho ranch for Christmas this year. Henry was traveling with his mother for the holidays so there was nothing keeping them in LA. Plus Orlando really wanted this Christmas to be white. He missed the snow living in LA where it was always warm. So they had come but yesterday morning Viggo got called away because of some emergency at one of his galleries and he had left promising to be back by nightfall today, which Orlando thought was over four hours ago. It was a day before Christmas Eve and all Orlando wanted was to curl up in front of the fire surrounded by Viggo’s arms. Christmas was an important day for Orlando and he wanted to share as much of it as he could of the whole experience with the one he loved.

Orlando sighed again and looked out the window. He could see the snow falling. It looked so beautiful, big and fluffy, like he was within a snow globe. Orlando knew he was being stupid, surely Viggo would tell him if he didn’t love him anymore or if there was someone else that Viggo had fallen for. Maybe that was it, maybe the reason Viggo kept going off so much was because he had someone better to go to.

A tear slid down Orlando’s check which he hastily wiped away and shook his head. No, he knew Viggo would never cheat on him. Viggo loved him. He did. But then why did Orlando suddenly feel like he was trying to convince himself that it was true?

A glance at the clock showed Orlando it was already one in the morning. Getting up he passed the bare Christmas tree in the corner of the living room and stopped to look at it. They had gone out into the forests a few days ago to chop it down and were planning to decorate it tonight, but that obviously wasn’t going to happen.

Orlando dumped the rest of his warm beer into he sink before climbing the stair and going to their bedroom. He quickly stripped down to his boxers and got beneath the cool sheets. He turned on his side away from the rest of the bed so he could at least pretend Viggo was there beside him holding him and keeping him warm, but in reality Orlando feel asleep sad, cold and alone.

****************************************

Viggo pulled up to the ranch just a little after two in the morning. He was late, really late. He had promised Orlando that work wouldn’t be a problem while they were on vacation, but an emergency had come up and he had to deal with it. Not only had he broken his promise but he had come home much later than expected, he just hoped Orlando wouldn’t be too mad at him.

As Viggo walked through the door, he noticed it was dark inside; he stopped by the living room to see the fire going but no Orlando. He also saw the box of decorations sitting by the couch and felt a wave of guilt wash over him. He forgot that he had promised Orlando they would decorate the tree tonight or was it yesterday night now?

Sighing he made his way upstairs and quietly opened the door to their bedroom. He saw Orlando sound asleep buried under the covers. Stripping down to his boxers he climbed under the covers and looked over Orlando’s sleeping body. Gently he brushed some of the silky curls away from Orlando’s forehead and placed a soft kiss there. Then he turned over and went to sleep not knowing if Orlando would appreciate being touched by him when his lover was likely to be angry at him for breaking his promises.

Viggo never knew that Orlando was just pretending to be asleep, or did he see the tears that slid down Orlando’s cheeks as Viggo rolled away from Orlando to his side of the bed to sleep. Orlando wanted to be held by Viggo, they use to sleep practically on top of one another not with a huge space between them. Over the last few months that space seemed to get bigger and bigger. Orlando also wanted Viggo to apologize to him and give him reassurances that he was really loved. But he didn’t get either of those, just the lonely silence of the night.
