Finally he was there. The night had fallen and the sky was full of stars. Such a beautiful scene. The boat carrying him to the island made a crashing sound as it hit the sand. He took his backpack from the bench next to him and jumped out of the boat to the knee-high water. It was warm around his legs unlike the air that surrounded him. It was cold like any other night in Malaysia. Raising his head up he met the lit little village. Somewhere there was his cottage, his cottage for a whole month. He had taken a good long vacation to channel his feeling somewhere. He felt he was too tired for his job, he couldn’t help bringing things home. Recently he had started to sleep less and less and it was a bad sign. Burn out was so close to happen. He’d been working for over nine years non-stop. Now it was time to settle down for a change.

He walked to the village and stood there looking around. He had no idea where to find someone to escort him to his cottage. Spotting a lively market place a short walking distance away he headed there. Maybe someone could give him directions. Once again he stood still looking around. Seeing a red haired man in the middle of the natives he decided to go and ask the man where he could find what he was looking for.

“Excuse me, excuse me…” He started and luckily made the man turn around. “Could you tell me where I could check myself in, please?” “Of course. You see that big house there?” The man asked pointing to the right. At that end on the market place stood a two -storey building, lit by two spotlights. “Uh-huh…” “That’s the place.“ “Thank you very much, mister.” Bowing a little he started walking towards the building.

Inside his eyes widened. The building was like a fancy hotel in Los Angeles. The floor was made of black marble. There stood carved columns as if they were holding the roof up. And there were so many flowers and plants that it looked more like a greenhouse than a hotel. “May I help you, sir?” A woman, that had suddenly come to stand in front of him, asked. “Umm… I have a reservation here…” “And your name is…?” “Oh…Yeah… Mortensen. Viggo Mortensen.” “Okay. I’ll check out the database.” She returned back behind the counter and looked at the files on the computer. “Yes, we have a bungalow reservation for Viggo Peter Mortensen…” “That would be me.” “Okay. If you’ll just wait here I’ll call Mahathir to guide you to your cottage.” “Okay…”

Viggo had started to look around again and some time spaced off. “Mr. Mortensen? Mr. Mortensen?” The same lady asked. “This is Mahathir, your guide for the whole month. He will take you to your cottage and if you feel like hiking or venturing the wilderness, he knows the places to go. Just come back here and ask for him. He speaks fluent English so the communications won’t be a problem.” Viggo had cast his eyes upon that woman and now he lowered his gaze to meet a young boy. “Nice to meet you, sir.” The boy said. “It’s nice to meet you too.” Viggo answered. “Mahathir, carry his bag to his cottage and make sure he makes himself at home, okay?” The lady said and the boy nodded. With that Mahathir took the backpack and darted out of the hall. “Did you have anything else with you, sir?” The boy asked apparently meaning a suitcase or something. “Actually yes, Mahathir. I had a suitcase but it got lost at the airport.” “That happens rather often around here. You will get your belongings tomorrow or the day after. I’ll bring it for you, sir.” “Thank you, Mahathir, that’s really nice of you.” Viggo knew that by acting politely the boy wanted to be tipped. It wasn’t a problem at all.

They crossed the crowded market place and headed to the jungle. There was a small torch-lit path leading to the bungalows. The nature was beautiful. Big leaves everywhere, hundreds of flowers. And as Viggo had only sandals the sandy path felt comfortable under his feet.
Soon Mahathir had led him to a clearing where the undergrowth was not so tall. Viggo could see small animals running everywhere as the undergrowth was lit by torches. As they moved on Viggo saw wooden cages, some laying on the ground and others hanging from the trees. At the edge of that clearing he saw that one of the cages were occupied. Squinting his eyes to see better he actually saw something. The torch nearby lay its streaks of light to a dirty face, bruised fingers and legs. “Don’t pay too much attention at him.” Mahathir said. “Why? What’s…Why?” Viggo asked but the boy kept silent. “What has he done to deserve this?” To answer the question the boy had only one answer: “Infidelity.” For the last time that night Viggo looked at the man and what he now saw nearly broke his heart. Bright, diamond-like tears running on the dirty cheeks and eyes so brown that they looked like molten chocolate.

The creature in there was too weak to call any help so as he passed back to the shadows mouthed two words. Just two words.
