Overall summary: A forbidden romance set in 1700’s Southern Carolina territory. A middle-aged magistrate, down on his luck and guilty from his previous acts in life, chances upon his next beautiful young clerk in a wretched almshouse. Against his better judgment Viggo brings the fair youth into his life. What has he done to himself? Worse yet, can the obsessed with beauty Viggo control himself? Jealous guilt spreads her midnight wings and waits for her tormented chances.
Chapter 5 Summary: VO 1st POV. After a year together, a night spent in drunken self-pity corrupts Viggo’s caution and allows him to view something he’s long avoided. The sight brings on fresh guilt and realization of the depth of his love for Orlando. During the evening Viggo summons the nerve to ask Orlando a personal question. The answer brings them both pain and fresh closeness.
