Chapter 1
Viggo was just putting the finishing touches on his latest painting when the phone interrupted his concentration.
“Shit,” he muttered as he grabbed a towel to clean his hands and made his way over to the phone “hello?”
“Hey Viggo, man what are you doing?” came Sean’s exuberant voice over the line. Sean was always lively; he would be this way if you called him at three in the morning, and it was something Viggo just didn’t understand, it wasn’t normal to be that cheerful all the time.
Viggo sighed, “Sean, what am I doing every time you call and say ‘hey Viggo what are you doing’?”
“Ummm…painting…”
“Well that’s exactly what I was doing before you interrupted me, do you need something?”
“Ok I’m just going to ignore your shitty attitude for the moment and tell you about this
guy I met…”
Viggo smirked “How sweet Sean, I didn’t know you turned gay on me, can I give myself the credit for that?” Viggo silently laughed, he knew how much Sean hated to be called gay. Sean was just fine hanging out with gay people but when someone referred to him as gay, well that was just stepping to far on his masculinity.
“Shut up and stop interrupting me, you draft wanker! Now listen I met this friend of Karls when I was out last week with Karl and he seemed really nice, he has been looking to hook up with someone and I thought…”
“Oh no, fuck no! Sean you are not setting me up on a date again. Do you remember what happened last time, the guy was a freak, he had this hair fetish that was not at all normal, I couldn’t wait for the night to get over so I could get away from him…”
“Viggo”
“…and then there was that ‘friend’ you work with. I still can’t to this day figure out if he was really a man or not…”
“Viggo!”
“…I mean honestly Sean where do you find these people from…” Viggo was now pacing up and down his studio. He knew Sean meant well, trying to set him up on dates so he wouldn’t be so lonely, but Viggo would rather have been lonely than go through another episode of Sean’s blind date game from hell.
“Viggo, stop and listen to me.” When Sean didn’t hear anything on the other end of the line he continued. “Dave is a really nice guy…”
“That’s what you said the last time.”
“Well, Ok but I mean it this time, and I have met him so I know he isn’t freaky or some crazy guy with a crazy fetish.”
“Sean, didn’t you meet the other guys first also?”
“.....”
“Well?”
“Um, yeah Viggo, but that’s not the point.” Viggo rolled his eyes; this conversation was beginning to give him a headache. “Look, Sean, I appreciate what your trying to do but the answer is no.”
“Right, ok, that’s fine…except, see I already told him you would meet him Friday night…”
“What!” Viggo roared into the phone. His pacing had stopped and now he was just standing still in the middle of the studio.
“Look it’s not what you think, you won’t be alone, see Karl, Dave and I are going out to the bar and all you have to do is come along with us, it’s not a date or anything see, it’s just four guys going to the bar and if two of them happen to hook up at the end of the night than so be it.” Sean said smugly.
“You’re a bastard Sean you know that?” Viggo said as he slumped down on the paint covered couch. There was no way in hell he was going out with them on Friday. He just wanted to spend tomorrow night painting. Right that’s what he would tell Sean. Sean could make excuses to the other guys, just tell them he was sick or had to leave town for an emergency. That would work! Because there was no way, positively no way that he was going to do this again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Viggo could feel Sean’s smirk on him as he walked across the parking lot toward the entrance of Jazzy’s Bar. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into this again.”
Sean laughed “Well you know me and my charm” At Viggo’s snort he continued, “Anyway you have been kind moody lately, you need to get laid my friend.”
“What I need is to make it through this night without another embarrassing episode.” Viggo said while looking meaningful at Sean.
“Don’t worry man; I got your back, that’s what friends are for after all.” Sean stated as he swung his arm around Viggo’s shoulders and led the reluctant man inside.
As it turned out Dave was not all that bad, but the night was still young. Viggo still had a few hours to find something wrong with him. After a round of awkward introductions, the four men had moved to a booth at the back of the bar with their beers. They talked small talk about work, football, and really anything that came to mind to keep the conversation going. Dave always seemed to bring the conversation back to sports which was something Viggo just wasn’t interested in.
Viggo suddenly realized the others were staring at him, “What I’m sorry, did you say something?” He had been zoned out, staring at his beer on the table, not paying attention to the conversation.
“Yes, I asked if you wanted another beer, it’s my turn to buy this round.” Dave asked from across the table.
“Oh yeah, sorry, I would love another one, thanks.” Viggo gave Dave a small smile which was immediately returned before he made his way through the crowd toward the bar.
“Well…so what do you think about Dave?” Karl asked from his place across from Sean. Viggo just shrugged.
“Oh come on man, quit looking for something wrong with the bloke, he really is a nice guy,” Sean pleaded with Viggo.
“I know he is, he would be a good friend but that’s all, I don’t think I could feel anything toward him more than friendship, plus he is really not my type.” Viggo answered as nicely as he could, in truth Dave was just pure boring to him. Granted it wasn’t fair to judge him within a few hours of meeting him but still, it wasn’t going to happen.
“Not your type, he has a dick and no boobs, what else do you want?” Karl asked rolling his eyes.
“Oh I don’t know, maybe a personality, do you realize he keeps talking about sports every few minutes…” Viggo trailed off as he saw Dave walking back toward their booth with four beers in his hand.
“So I miss anything interesting?” Dave asked upon settling back in his chair. “I was just watching the hockey game up there…”
As he continued to talk, the other three were hard pressed not to look at each other and laugh.
The night passed painfully slow for Viggo, and after a conversation about the statistics of baseball it was his turn to buy the next batch of beers. He took a seat at the end of the bar to wait for the long line to lessen. A burst of drunken laughter made him look over at the table a few feet away from him.
“…about six or seven years” a man slurred.
“Yep and still after all this time his ass is still the tightest, sweetest thing I’ve ever had.” Slurred another man at the table. This statement caused a cheer and another round of laughter from the group of men. There were three men sitting at the table. The one closest to Viggo was a tall, skinny man with a pointy face. He looked like one of those slimy men in movies who could befriend you one moment and then turn around and throw a knife with deadly accuracy into your heart the next. The man next to him dwarfed him in appearance. This man looked like he weighed close to three hundred pounds, with two hundred and ninety nine of it due to the muscles. He reminded Viggo of a pro-wrestler that took to many steroids. The last man was nothing to be impressed with, he was of normal height and weight for a 40 some year old man, but it was his expression that made him fit in with the other two. He bore a look of ‘if you even look at me the wrong way your dead’. All three men were red in the face from all the beer they had drunk.
Viggo turned his back to them but continued to listen to the conversation. It was hard to follow as the men slurred so much but what he got out of it was that they had fucked someone and liked it.
“It’s the most satisfying when the little whore is crying and begging for you to stop, but of course you never do, because who would want to, I mean I just want to fuck the kid over and over again till there is nothing left of him, hahaa!” the big man said.
Viggo’s eyebrows rose at this. What the hell, it sounds like they had raped someone, many times. The thought that they had hurt some kid sickened Viggo, but he was quickly pulled out of his thoughts as the men got up from the table and steadied themselves on their feet.
“Well I’m off to Dead End to…play.” Said the mean looking one with an evil sneer.
“Give our love to the kid…” Viggo heard as the men stumbled from the bar out into the chilly night air.
The conversation had left Viggo feeling very confused and sad for a kid he didn’t even know. He though about calling the police but then thought better of it, besides what good would it do, he had no proof besides that of three overly drunken men’s conversation. After collecting four beers, he headed back to the table.
“Took you long enough!” Karl slurred and pounded his fist onto the table which made it land in the peanut bowl, spilling all of them into his lap “Opps!”
Viggo didn’t respond, only handed out the beers and looked toward the door, his mind still on the kid.
“Hey man, you ok?” Sean asked with concern on his face. He pulled at Viggo’s shoulder to get the man to face him.
“Yeah, just tired…actually I’m not feeling so good, I think I’ll just head home, sorry guys.” Viggo softly replied as he got up and put his coat on.
“That’s ok; we should probably call it a night anyway before we can’t drive home...” Sean trailed off looking at Karl who was still trying to put the peanuts back in the bowl. “Shit, he is not driving.”
“You know what, I walked here so I’ll take his car and drive him back home and then walk home from there.” Dave replied taking Karl’s car keys away from him.
“You sure you don’t mind?” Sean asked.
“Heyyy! I can drive myself!” shouted Karl who was promptly ignored.
“Nope, I don’t live far from him, it was nice to meet you Viggo, maybe we can all get together another time.” Dave said as he pulled Karl up from the bench. Viggo nodded politely back at Dave.
“Wait I lost my keys, where did they go?” exclaimed Karl.
“I have them you drunk, let’s go.” Said Dave pulling Karl after him out of the bar leaving Sean and Viggo behind listening to Karl’s fading shouts that Dave was a thief.
“Well you want to tell me what’s wrong?” Sean asked once they had stepped out into the parking lot.
“Nothing, I really am just tired.” Viggo lied and hoped Sean would drop it, which thankfully he did.
“Ok well then, I’ll stop by tomorrow sometime.” At Viggo’s nod he started to walk away but turned around and said “And I promise not to set you up on anymore dates…for a while.”
Viggo smirked at him and turned to get in to his car when a thought occurred to him. “Hey Sean?” When Sean came back to him he asked, “Have you ever heard of a place called Dead End?”
“Um, yeah, it’s a bar Viggo, why?
“Why have we never gone there?”
“It doesn’t have a very good reputation, it’s in the bad part of town, lots of bad shit happens there.” Sean explained as he walked over to his car. “Goodnight Viggo!”
“Yeah, goodnight Sean.” Viggo replied as he pondered over Sean’s words about Dead End.
